Re: Dead Center

The sleeve type 3MT to 2MT adapter is to be greatly preferred over the much more common tang type in that at least the Atlas made one does not hang the 2MT widget out in front of the spindle nose.

A Morse #3 solid center or a Morse #2 solid center in a Morse #3 sleeve will fit your headstock spindle equally well. ?I’d go with the sleeve, though, for several reasons.

?

The #2 centers are cheaper.

?

As your tailstock ram is a Morse #2 taper, the sleeve will allow you to use your tooling in either spot. ?And it will allow you to make tooling that will fit your tailstock.

?

The sleeve will allow you to mount your tailstock centers in your headstock for the purpose of truing them up, which has to be done occasionally.

?

Will the sleeve introduce inaccuracy? ?Not really - any decent sleeve will be much more accurate than you will ever need.

In most Chinese cases I would agree with you.? But how badly depends upon the size and shape of the piston.? Most of the Chinese made piston-type tool posts have a very small round piston.? The Yuasa, which was I think the first piston type made some 40 odd years ago, has a larger rectangular piston.? I bought one new 38 years ago (when the cost in 2019 Dollars was about three times what the CDCO one costs today) and have never felt that it was inferior to the wedge type.? Fortunately, the holders will fit either type.

I have the Atlas 10" lathe. I do not know what the center to center is,
but the bed length the carriage rides on is almost 36" from where it
meets the headstock to the end of the bed. In this group it had
previously been determined that it is of vintage 1957 or so.

I purchased the Phase II wedge type about 6 years ago.? I've been very happy with it.? I bought CDCO toolholders and found that their dimensions are a bit variable (the locking handle locks in a variety of different positions with the CDCO, but in the same place with the? Phase II).? The variability in dimensions has had no practical significance in the use of the toolholders.? Amazon has the Phase II set for $223 with free shipping.

This is called “zinc pest” and is the result of the casting alloy (primarily zinc) having lead as an impurity.
’Tain’t s’posed to be any lead in there, but has been known to happen.
In other words, this is an anomaly not something endemic to Zamak or other zinc-based alloys.
The Zamak alloy used in our lathe parts is quite a strong & durable alloy. Check it out.
BUT some few parts have fallen to zinc pest.?
There is no way to induce this problem in existing parts, nor to remedy it (except replacing the parts).

Subject: [atlas-craftsman IO] Dead Center

?

The manual for my Atlas 10" says a sleeve is provided to go from a #2
Morse taper to a #3 Morse taper. I know little about machining and so I
don't know if this means I could buy a #3 Morse dead center and directly
put it in the headstock spindle and eliminate the sleeve. Would I be
able to do this, or could there still be some problems in the taper of
the bought dead center not matching like it should to the taper in the
headstock?
