Greetings all! I have an Atlas 1G Pacific I am attempting to resurrect. Upon disassembly, I notice the drivers are made of a dark gray material and are rather "soft". They are so soft I fear they will not stay in gauge once the unit is reassembled. Can anyone shed any light on this matter? Are they supposed to be soft like this . . . if not, is there a cure? I
know this is a long shot, but are there replacement drivers available
or does anyone have a set of drivers they would sell or "loan"? Thanks in advance. Dan

Hi Dan, I may still have a parts unit in my stash, let me see what I can dig up.? Cheers,

From previous correspondence on this site it appears that the metal the drivers were made from consists of some dubious lead/?zinc/ ? alloy which will eventually disintegrate. Its fatal!.
You're better off replacing them with some english made drivers eg Romford or North West lines? sic

The drivers on the Atlas Pacific are made of an engineering-type plastic/Delrin with nickel silver rims and can't deteriorate in a manner described. If you have a steamer with Zamac drivers, it is not an Atlas/Rivarossi steamer.

Hi Dan, OK, I do have an Atlas Pacific and can confirm drivers are plastic with metal rim. I thought this was a leftover from another project, but unfortunately it IS a project I put away about 5 years ago and forgot to come back to. The loco now has a NWSL can motor and improved pickup on the tender, but still needs paint and details. I’m sorry, I thought I could help, but alas this engine still needs its drivers. Cheers,

I never said I had
Zamac drivers . . . someone else said that . . . and I may not be an expert, but I am not stupid. I know what a
Atlas/Rivarossi steamer is . . . .
My drivers are plastic material and THEY ARE deteriorating in the manner I described. Dan

What you need is UV glue, just paint it on the plastic parts use
a UV light for 10 seconds and bingo, hard plastic. It's also great
if the hole for the driver rod retainers are slogged out, just
fill the hole use the light then redrill the holes.

I would try to find replacement drivers on eBay, either from a seller selling Atlas steamer parts or buy a parts unit with the drivers intact. If your drivers have actually gotten soft, which would be caused by some substance that attacked them, like a non plastic safe lubricant or solvent, gluing them probably won't work permanently.

In case the softening of the plastic is caused by oil
contamination,? soak the wheels overnight in Isopropyl alcohol,
then a good brush with an old toothbrush,? a final flush and dry
well before applying the glue
