1821 Indenture Land Mortgage & People Tadcaster Area
Hi, I'm a new member of group I have an old legal document (thought to be genuine and not something prepared for tourists) it consists of two sheets (76*57cm) bound by tapes & seals on a heavy paper and deals with parcels of land and people in the Tadcaster area of York There are some 20 names on the document none of which have any references to our families I think my wife purchased it to have it mounted/framed as a wall feature, difficult as two sheets and writing on both sides Until recently it sat in an archive box, and I've transcribed it to see what it's all about, all very complex and still trying to understand Am thinking the York Group members will recognise the locations and possibly some of the players involved Basically, I'm looking to flesh out a story about the document and what might have happened down the track, to be kept so people can read if interested There are ~ 20 names having varying references & roles and the main ones are John William CLOUGH George SWIFT Richard TOMLINSON Richard MORLEY George SAVILE George ADDINNELL William HARTLEY Stephen HARTLEY And locations mention include: Tadcaster, Oxton House, Newton Thyme, Wises Intack, Tadcaster Low Moor I've attached the WIP Transcription together with a photo of the document and a section of the binding/seals and signatures Cheers Ken Morris New Farm Brisbane

FARRER
3
Hi Listers, I am looking for two FARRERs in my tree. lst one William FARRER b.1758 in Horsforth parents Henry FARRER and Sussanah. The last I have of him is paying Land Tax in 1818. His father died in 1800 and wrote his will in 1795 and Wiliam was mentioned in this will. His mother died in 1818 but had no will. His uncle (mother’s brother) died in 1826 and he wasnt mentioned in that will and his younger brother Benjamin got Fagley estate from his uncle in the 1826 will. So I assume he died between 1818 and 1826. 2nd. Joseph FARRER b. 1764 in Bradford from the same family. Again mentioned in his father Henry’s will but nothing else. Not mentioned in his uncle’s will. I have found a Joseph FARRER death Bradford Cathedral in 1803 saying he was a comber. I know that you often come across AR and not ER but it my searching our lot are usually ER. Regards, Maureen in Oz

I hope everyone has a lively time over the festive season. We emigrated to Perth in Western Australia from Bradford when I was a child. It doesn't feel much like Christmas here given it was 42 C today. Maybe time to return.......

WHITWAM
4
David Noting your surname I wonder if you can answer a query I have. My GGrandmother was Hannah WHITWAM daughter of Henry WHITWAM and Sarah TIFFANY. This is as spelt on my Grandfather Joseph EDWARDS` birth certificate. However the marriage entry in Halifax register has WHITWORTH and Hannah signed with that name. Was this a regular alternative name for WHITWAM or just a one off? Joseph`s brother`s certificate has WHITWAIN but that is obviously just a mistranscription at the registry office. best wishes Marjorie Ward, Derbyshire, UK Sources for Disley; Lyme Handley; Taxal & Whaley www.disley.net Sources for NWDby incl Chapel; Charlesworth; Chinley; Fernilee; Glossop; Hayfield; Hope Valley; Mellor & New Mills www.nwdbysources.uk John Ward Paintings: www.johnward-art.com

Hi Listers, I have found a death in Ancestry of Ann WHITELY nee FARRER Registration quarter Jan-Feb-Mar Death Registration Place Bradford Death Date Mar 1864, Interred Death Place Yorkshire West Riding, Volume 9b Page 49. But I cant get a copy of the death certificate from GRO as I tried to put all details in and it came back no results. Ann was a Quaker but have only found her birth to parents John and Hannah HOLMES and she got married to Thomas WHITELY in Bradford Parish Church in 1826. I have also found on Ancestry will for Thomas but again cant get a copy of the full will. Probate was in Wakefield. How do I go about getting the above when I get “no result” which I search Maureen In Oz

Frank Herbert GIFFORD
19
Hello listers, I am trying to find out more about Frank Herbert GIFFORD. He married my gt gt grandfather's sister Hannah MORRISON on August 10th 1863 in Brighton, Sussex. I do not have a birth date for him so he was possibly born before civil registration. On his marriage certificate he states his occupation as a Corporal 9th Lancers and his father named as George William GIFFORD, Gentleman. Hannah and Frank had their first daughter named Louisa Annie. She was baptised on July 3rd 1864 in Brighton and Frank's occupation is "Officer". Their second daughter Minnie Bertha was born on 12th March 1871 in Brighton. A third daughter was born on 24th December 1873 in Brighton with Frank's occupation recorded as Commercial Traveller. A son, named Frank Charles GIFFORD was born on 14th July 1876 in Brighton, his father's occupation was recorded as Commercial Clerk. Around 1878 the relationship between Hannah and Frank broke down. There is a possible marriage for a Frank Herbert GIFFORD to Emily HOW in Canterbury, Kent in 1879, June quarter vol 2a, pg 1139 Hannah remarried in 1882 to Joseph DRISCOLL in Brighton. UK newspapers list several reports regarding Frank Herbert GIFFORD and many link to his pride in being in 9th Lancers and serving in India. His last UK newspaper record is from Yorl, Yorkshire in 1888 when he did time for theft. However there are two newspaper reports from a Toronto newspaper in August 1889 for wife beating and again mention is made of his military career. On Familysearch there is a marriage record in Toronto in July 1889. His parents are recorded as George Edward and Louise Charlotte GIFFORD, Frank's occupation Surgeon. So this may not be the man I am interested in. I cannot find a death record for FH GIFFORD in England or in Canada. I have not found any confirmed UK census records for Frank. 2 of Frank's daughters emigrated to Canada in 1888. Hannah did not die until 1909 in Brighton. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you Lynley Chapman Whitby, New Zealand

WEBSTER Aiskew early to mid 1700s
‘Evening, my time, Listers, Would there be anybody out there who knows anything about Robert WEBSTER who married widow Ann ELLERTON (née BODDY) on 1 October 1724, Bedale? Ann and her first husband, Edward ELLERTON, had three children. Edward, a butcher in Aiskew, died in 1720 and their children, at the marriage of Ann to Robert WEBSTER, were aged about 12, 9 and 4 years old. So, the three children were really raised by Robert and Ann and I have no idea where they lived, but probably Aiskew, what occupation Robert was involved with or really anything about their lives together. Robert and Ann had possibly three children themselves. The eldest of Edward’s and Ann’s children, Francis, became a farmer and marred Dorothy SCOT, "of Nuton" in 1738 at Burneston. I would like to know more about Robert WEBSTER, if anyone can help me John.

BODDY Patrick Brompton, Little Fencote, late 1600s.
4
Listers, I am chasing the ancestry of George BODDY who, when he made his Will dated 10 March 1718, was "of Little Fencote", near Kirby Fleetham. I know absolutely nothing about his wife, however his children were baptised at Patrick Brompton in 1770/80s. Any help and/or information will be much appreciated. John.

HARRISON Swainby 1700s
‘Morning, I am seeking anyone who has knowledge of John and Ann HARRISON, of Swainby, and their forebears. They had at least seven children all baptised at Pickhill-cum-Roxby between 1744 and 1756. The youngest, Mary, married Francis ELLERTON on 18 may 1780 at St. Lambert’s Church, Burneston. I have Ann’s Will dated 21 April 1781 when she was living at Leeming Lane. Her probate was granted 24 January 1786. Not much to go on but if someone could fill me in on this pair, then I would be delighted. John.
