Green Heroin
2
Yesterday, Apr 5, I was hiking on the West Watson Lake path, and encountered a tall birder with a cheerful expression and a pair of Swarovski glasses. He tried to point out a Green Heron he had spotted in the weeds but I couldn't pick it out. The bird flew out of view and my guide continued north. I followed the bird south and circled around to get closer, I eventually spotted it and got a couple of good pictures. (see attached). I am attaching a picture in hope it will reach the gentleman who helped me. If this note is inappropriate, I apologize. Update on Mew Gull
The Mew Gull continues this afternoon at Willow, often drifting on the water near some Ring-billeds. Again, too distant for photos, but three of us studied it through the scope. All features seem to match with a 2nd winter Mew Gull. And, based on the new obs, I have to make a correction -- the gull does seem to have a dark spot or band close to the tip of its yellow bill ---- this also fits with 2nd year winter Mew. It seems to be the same size as a Coot. If it stays in the same area: After parking at south shore, take the main trail to the right, then down to the water's edge. Scope necessary.

Mew Gull
This morning at about 10:45am I saw what I believe is a Mew Gull sitting in the middle of Willow Lake. I had parked at South Shore and was scoping the lake from the water's edge. I got fairly good views through my scope, but was only able to get blurry photos due to the large distance (see attached samples). I was able to use nearby coots and buffleheads to see it was comparable to their size. The first thing that caught my attention was the pronounced white crescent that separated the gray back from the black tail. The bill was yellow with a small marking (not black) that I couldn't fully make out. The black tail had small white markings. When I looked down for a moment at about 11:05am, the gull was gone when I looked back up. I believe there is a very good chance it is still there.

A classic dark morph. At Watson Lake, in trees just below the overlook this afternoon, and also in the tree where the Red-shouldered Hawk has been reported. That bird is also still in that area. Sue D -- Sue Drown Prescott

Magnolia Warbler
5
Here is a posting of Dr. Carl Tomoff's great sighting of a Magnolia Warbler along the Peavine trail yesterday. Carl requested we post this. Good birding! "I watched this warbler foraging among dense deciduous foliage 10-20m away along the Peavine Trail southeast of Watson Lake from 0845-0905. When I heard a call note I didn’t recognize, I stopped near a trailside bench just north of the major powerline corridor crossing the creek. I used 10x42 binoculars. The sun was behind me. At times the bird was fully exposed. I saw a white eye ring, two thin wing bars, lower belly to undertail coverts and under tail feathers halfway to the dark terminal band. Its lower belly, chest, and throat were yellow. Its yellow flank had thin black streaks. Its head and wings appeared grayish. About 0920 I alerted a group of birders who were also able to observe it. This is my first sighting of Magnolia Warbler in Yavapai County." Steve & Sue

New Access Protocol for the Prescott WTP
3
The Prescott City Public Works Dept has issued new procedures for birders wanting access to the Recharge Ponds (WTP) on Melville Rd near the airport. See attached. If this smells just the slightest bit bureaucratic, well, it is. The good news is that your passcard will allow you access dawn-dusk, 7 days a week through that pedestrian gate in the fence just to the left of the main/electronic gate. I understand that you must call to make an appointment to sign the waiver and get your passcard. The # is in the attached. Apparently, you need to go to the Public Wooks area at 1505 Sundog Ranch Rd. for your appointment. This may change; I have not tried it yet. Good luck and good birding - Susan Drown Prescott, AZ -- Sue Drown Prescott

Prescott WTP Access
4
Since it's shorebird season, an update on access to the Prescott WTP, aka the recharge ponds, near the airport is in order. Although the City had promised to allow pedestrian access through a pedestrian gate (just to the left of the main gate) from dawn to dusk, 7 days a week, that is NOT what's happening. The pedestrian gate is locked for now. Birders can park just outside the new main gate in a designated dirt parking strip on the right. When the vehicle gate is open, pedestrian access is allowed. That is usually during working hours, from early morning to mid/early afternoon, M-F only. As always, stay on the berms and respect the maintenance vehicles and staff. If you wish, I encourage you to contact the City --the City Parks Dept, the Public Works Dept, and perhaps your City council folks to respectfully request that they unlock the pedestrian gate to allow birders access in the late afternoon and on weekends, as promised. Today the water is drying up in Pond 3 (SE pond), with several Least Sands, a Solitary Sandpiper, a Wilson's Phalarope, and a Greater Yellowlegs, along with Killdeer & a couple of Ibis. The water is drying up, though, and the water is still too deep in the other ponds. But it's always changing! possible KY warbler Watson Woods
I heard a bird late this morning (but never saw it) that I think may have been a Kentucky warbler. I wasn't confident of the id. in the field, so I am not submitting this to eBird. But I pass this info along for you to do with as you wish. I was not far from the stairs that go down into Watson Woods from the Sun dog parking lot. Previous sightings of KY warblers in Watson Woods have been in mid- to late May. Steve Burk
