Post-Christmas Bowser G5s Find
Hello list, Sometimes neat finds show up right after Christmas. My stepfather's local hobby shop had a trio of what turned out to be Bowser PRR assembled kits on consignment. I brought back this nicely assembled rendition of G5s 5712. The person that built this did a really nice job. I did not have time to inspect it much before packing, but I think it has the next-to-last version of the Pittman DC71 motor. Amongst other neat touches are nickel silver wheelsets on the tender trucks....I'm looking forward to test running the model. I might need to redecal the model (cab side lettering is faint) at some point, but the paint and assembly work seem terrific. Before I forget, Henry, one way to preserve older decals is to hit them with at least one coat of Testor's Glosscote. I warm up the can in a coffee cup filled with warm water (for a couple of minutes), and I shake thoroughly before spraying; that seems to ensure smooth and even coverage whether on a model or a decal sheet. Old HO camelback 0-4-0-can anyone identify this engine...the motor is vertically mounted?
This is definitely NOT a Mantua. And I have wo of them right here to prove it. It is, IMHO, an International. Someone, I believe Gem also had an early brass model but it did not have a vertical motor. I have two Gem B&O C16a¡¯s with very similar drives but I haven¡¯t been able to get them on the test track yet. The New One model had a longer, rather ungainly looking, cab. The first Mantua I had ran like clock. Smooth, quiet and it could sustain a slow enough speed to satisfy most slow speed switcher freaks like me. I got it out of the packing, bent the fireman¡¯s cab roof back up into position (happens easily in shipping on these) and placed it on the tracks. After maybe about a minute or two of running it ran way better than I expected. John Hagen

Kitbashed PRR K4s
6
Hello list, You may ask why I would need to kitbash an HO scale PRR K4s 4-6-2 since there have been (amongst others) the Bowser, Bachmann, MTH, and Broadway Limited versions. As with many kitbashing questions, the answer is just a skosh complicated. I attached a couple of shots of what will become PRR K4s 5455. k45455.jpg The first prototype photo shows the engine about 1947. The second shows the engine probably in the middle of WWII, but shows the main disc-type driver better. prr_5455_4-6-2a_ft_dix_nj.jpg A few years ago I purchased a Bowser "13,000 gallon" tender (really an early 130F82 that can stand in for a 130P75) and a Sunset/Samhongsa PRR K4s boiler from another modeling friend. Initially, I had no idea what I'd do with the pieces. Last year, I bought a used Mantua 4-6-2 that had (amongst other cosmetic flaws) a cracked cab. I had one remaining Alliance Mantua 4-6-2 reposer kit, so I fit it to the model. Once I saw photos of K4s 5455 with the main disc-type driver, I thought the Mantua chassis (albeit with all disc-type drivers) could work with the Samhongsa K4s boiler. If I can get a supply of more Mantua spoked Pacific drivers, I could get closer to the prototype, but that's not the end of the world for me. I test fit the Samhongsa boiler to the Mantua chassis, and after a bit of grinding on the firebox front sheets, the boiler fit nicely onto the chassis. I'm still building up a pad of .030 styrene attached to the boiler so that it will eventually sit level on the Mantua chassis. I just got the engine running with a very basic decoder installation. So now I have a Mantua 4-6-2 with a Korean boiler and a Bowser tender....very American. :) I like the modernized front end appearance (relocated headlight and generator, along with front platform and drop coupler pilot). I plan on finishing the model to represent the prototype's general configuration in 1947. Doug Kisala

Making and fitting window inserts for Mantua extruded aluminum passenger cars
4
I can easily cut the length and width on my mini table saw. The problem is the corners. What tool can I use to make the tight radius corners? A friend suggested a router. Has anyone overcome this problem? How? What tools did you use? Filing the corners down by hand is possible, but accuracy and uniformity are hard to achieve with hand tools. Plus doing four corners on each window for a dozen or so cars is a daunting proposition. Thanks for your help. Walter P.S.: I am cross posting this on a few sites. Sorry if that annoys anyone. Please bear with me.

Bowser K11 Tender
Hello list, Nice to say hello to all of you on io groups. I found out the Mantua 28 foot tender's tank length is 26 scale feet, which makes it passable for a layout-quality version of a K11c with a 7500 gallon or 8000 gallon tender. Prior to this kitbash, I had thought of it as a switcher tender, but I think it works behind this medium-sized Pacific. The coal bunker is a bit short and the tank height is too tall for a 7500 gallon tender and too short for an 8000 gallon tender.....I decided to compromise since I didn't feel ready to scratch build a tender. Thanks very much to Jeff Pellas for sending a pair of the durable Bowser NYC-style tender trucks which work nicely with this model. A bit of detailing for the engine is next on the agenda. 4560 was a K11e, built a bit later (and by NYC's preferred builder Also) than the Baldwin-built K11c that I'm working towards. nyc-s4560s.jpg Doug Kisala

Replacing a brass frame on a Bowser H9 ??
4
IT says that you can replace the brass frame with a cast one ? It appears to be able to fix my rpoblem on this loco . HOWEVER , there are micro brass bearing on all drivers . Is it big enough for the axles with the bearings on them ?? Whip out the caliper again ?? Henry

Varney/Bowser Old Lady
8
I have an Old Lady by Varney. I know Bowser reworked these kits and changed the cylinders and frames. Does anyone know if the newer style Bowser cylinders will fit the old style Varney frame/boiler/crossheads without major work to the engine? I love the engine but never cared for the slanted cylinders. I think Bowser did a good thing changing them out. How does the Bowser compare to the original engine as far as running qualities? Thanks, oldline1

Bowser's K11 With DCC [2 Attachments]
4
Doug, Nice work! I changed my collecting direction from NYC, B&O and PRR to almost exclusively PRR meaning I have some surplus NYC items. Although I have already parted with my K11 that had a Knapp tender with it, I am certain I still have at least a couple sets of the trucks you initially wanted. Might have a Bowser set but definitely some PSC brass ones. I also have a brass NYC short express tender... the kind found behind K3s, K5s and early Hudson's. Also have four 19000 class cabooses from various manufactures. If you or anyone is interested in any of this stuff, email me directly. Jeff jppellas@...

Bowser's K11 With DCC
Hello list, A few months ago, I bought a completed Bowser K11 from my local hobby shop. The version I bought has the cast frame and DC71 motor. I bought it with an Athearn Pacific tender that worked fine on DC, but didn't really resemble any of the tenders used by the New York Central on their West Shore Line commuter service. After reading Rich Stoving's book on New York Central Steam Power in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, I decided this engine will represent one of the Baldwin-built K11c engines (later NYC numbers 4450-4479) and hopefully one of the engines that worked the West Shore Line. Link below is to a shot of Baldwin-built 4477. http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/nyc/nyc-s4477ass.jpg I had a different DC71 motor with the skew-wound armature and insulated brush holder. I ended up swapping the brush holder with the kit's DC71 (which had a different worm gear) so I could add a Digitrax DH126 decoder. I had a Mantua switcher tender on hand that is (to my eyes) reasonably close to the NYC 7500 gallon tenders that the K11c engines were built with. I wanted to use Bowser's NYC tender trucks, but I could not find any, so I used Bowser's Andrews leaf spring tender trucks. The engine I bought had the footboard pilot installed, and I swapped it out for the passenger/cow catcher pilot from Bowser (most of the West Shore Line K11 engines had the passenger pilot). For serious students of the NYC, please forgive the liberties I took to produce an operating model. I do plan on a few detail additions (like marker lights and a generator) along with painting and decaling the engine to represent one that worked to the end of NYC steam in NJ (1952). Doug Kisala
