Varney/Bowser Old Lady

I have an Old Lady by Varney. I know Bowser reworked these kits and changed the cylinders and frames. Does anyone know if the newer style Bowser cylinders will fit the old style Varney frame/boiler/crossheads without major work to the engine?

I love the engine but never cared for the slanted cylinders. I think Bowser did a good thing changing them out.?

How does the Bowser compare to the original engine as far as running qualities?

Thanks,

oldline1

I can't verify a ''change'' to the steam chest / cylinders ? Go to hoseeker.org literature section to look at the diagrams ??? Hope this helps .? Henry?

I have ever been able to get HOSeeker to open using several computers.

The Varney Old Lady cylinders slanted inward at the top. The Bowser version used cylinders that were basically straight sided.

Varney itself also used the straight sided cylinders at some point.? An old ad shows then on a 10 wheeler also (with valve gear).

I only saw Old Ladys with the slanted cylinders. Same with the Casey Jones. The only straight ones I have seen were on Bowsers.

Hi Richard , Gordon Varney was a clever old rascal , same for Bowser . Since it costs boo coo bucks to make casting molds it'd be to your advantage to ''sub'' the part ?? I'll look up hoseeker and bowser for this OK OK ????? ?Henry

?Hello RH.? , Coffee in cup , waking up [I think] I looked in on seeker [hoseeker.org] and the diagrams show both the Lady and Casey with canted cylinders . Later today I'll try some Mantuas and a set from a Bowser G5 ? To see what might be possible ??? Henry H.

You are in luck , I have Casey Joneses , a G5 4-6-0? Mantua saddles as well . The Mantuas? inside size is 9 mm. . The cylinders are smaller size overall . MDC 0-6-0 cylinders will work 9mm , econo valve works .?? Bowser / Pennline G 5 4-6-0 is likely the same as a K4? an H9 ?G5 7mm well inside . Quirks ?? Varney mounted their cylinders forward , drill yours centered if needed . Your choice . Drill and file , eh ?? Henry
