Re: QY100 not responding to external MIDI on MIDI in
开云体育On the qy70 I ?think there’s a setting for midi echo on/off. I’m guessing there might be something similar on the 100. Try that?On 8 Aug 2021, at 13:55, Giles Boardman <giles.boardman@...> wrote:

QY100 not responding to external MIDI on MIDI in
开云体育
Hello! Driving myself crazy here. I have more than one QY100 and one appears to have gone rogue. Its versions are 1.36 and 1.00. I can get it to make sounds playing its own keyboard but I can't get it to respond to anything sent to MIDI in. I've tried a? keyboard
and a sequence and I have run the MIDI in/out test which came back OK. I am often confused by the MIDI utility page on the QY100, so I don't mess with it if I can avoid it. I would assume I have got something wrong there, except I have tried the same settings
on aother unit and they work, and I have tried the settings from the other unit in the rogue unit and they don't. I'd assume a hardware fault if it wasn't for the test result. My other two units have a higher OS version and a lower - 1.38 and 1.04. I've done
a factory reset. So, I'm out of ideas and any suggestions would be gratefully received. Best Giles

Re: QY100 as an educational / practice tool
Good ideas, Eric, thanks! I'll definitely use the fingered chord exercise until I find someone to practice with. I agree about learning by reading the manual. I've been going through it slowly and having used other apps or daws, things are making a lot of sense. Except the "grid/staff" in the sequencer, I'll need more time with that.

Re: Mellotron?
开云体育I can’t say for certain if there’s anything better than the “Mellow” patch to get the Monotron ?sound, however, I would certainly venture to guess that adding one of the 43 variations and adjusting it’s settings (and the wet/dry of the variation) might get you alot closer to the sound you are looking for ?since many of them have a good number of tweakable parameters… Also adding/tweaking the chorus and reverb parameters might also help (to a lesser degree). ??Of course tweaking the LFO and the ADSR?envelope?(or technically the ADR?envelope on the QY, lol)?might help…but I’m sure you’ve already been there, done that. Re: QY100 as an educational / practice tool
开云体育Bill,By yourself you can turn on fingered Chords (1st Song Screen) then hit record and press a combo of a Key and a chord type (lookup fingered mode in the manual- in this mode all chords only require two fingers). ?You can then stop record and hit Menu->Edit and see the keys in the chord. ? BTW, don’t forget to turn off finger mode when you’re done or you’ll be very confused when you’re trying to play the keyboard normally, lol. If there is another person around?this is a *fun* (lol?) game for ear training: You can learn intervals by having them press random (white) keys (to start) and you guess…but you need to start *small*: Have them start by hitting C-D-E (in order)and then they wait a few seconds and hit one of those keys at random, and you answer with the interval (1st, 2nd, or 3rd)… once you get pretty decent (like 90% accuracy) then add a white key and sot hit?C-D-E-F (in order) and hit one of those at random …and so on. ? At anytime (ie: if you’re stumped) you can ask them to hit them in order again (C-D-E-F) and then they hit the one you are stumped on (after waiting a few seconds). ?Keep adding keys (everytime you hit over 90% accuracy) until you are doing a full octave of intervals (until you can literally start with all eight white keys C to C and get above 90%). ? Note: If you are really new to this it will take several (probably many) sessions to be able to get to a full octave. ? Once there you should try starting at different octaves (but still just C to C). ?Next, start on different keys (so now you are mixing white and black keys… so like the key of F that has just one black key)… then do the next harder key (the one with two black keys) and so on…? But wait, there’s more!: ? Once you’ve mastered that, then you can see if you can start to differentiate the full chromatic scale (ie: just like in the beginning, but start with C-C#/Db-D-D#Eb instead of?C-D-E-F and slowly add more, then add different starting keys, etc (though at this point you are really doing number of semitones vs intervals I believe). Note: It is best with two people who both want to learn so you switch after 3 (or 5) wrong guesses and see who can get further…. you add complexity (as noted above as you both get better… though one can certainly play at a harder level than the other as a handicap so to speak). It’s pretty obvious that if you play this game consistently (and often) you will achieve a certain level of ear training. ?Note: A game it doesn’t need to be (and shouldn’t be) an hour long affair…it would become more of a chore at that point. ?A 10 minute game will be enough to help you learn provided you’re playing fairly often… so just like with instrument practice, it’s better to play 10 minutes every day then an hour once a week. There are certainly other things that you can do with the QY70/QY100 to help you learn chords in chord progressions, but one of the best things you can do is to actually follow the tutorial in the manual…it is actually REALLY good and quite easy to follow. ? It will not only help you get familiar with the QY, but also open your eyes to a lot of the features that will help you understand and build Chord progressions and accompaniment patterns and so on… Anyway, I hope this helps a bit. 开云体育No. For learning or training use your ears. The only possible use would be to teach you to keep on beat like a metronome? On Jun 21, 2021, at 9:59 AM, BillGrooves via groups.io <bill.grooves@...> wrote:

QY100 as an educational / practice tool
Hello,
I'm a beginner in the world of music - I know an OK amount of basic vocabulary and how things fit together. The main instrument I practice on is a digital piano. I have a QY100 because it was under 100$ so I had to snatch it up, and I've been slowly wrapping my head around it. I like that it pulls me away from screens and other distractions. I was wondering if you folks with more experience can think of ways to use the features of the QY100 as a learning tool for different things that translate well in general - not just as accompaniment. The only thing I can think of right now is practicing timing - recording into the sequencer without quantizing, and analyzing the data in the "tracker-like" menu. Any way to practice scales when out and about, or "ear training", or chords? I know there are apps out there, but I'd like to learn and use this tool to get to know it better. Thanks! |
Re: Digital Piano into the Guitar/Mic input?
I always find these kind of things confusing, and coincidentally I am in the midst of learning about this issue in general, but I can say that if you try it before getting a firm answer, ?make sure to (at least) do the following: 1) Turn Power OFF all equipment, amps, and speakers. 2) Connect all equipment, amps, and speakers. 3) Turn down the gain and the volume of the QY100 to ZERO. 4) Turn down output on all other equipment to zero 5) Turn down speaker volume to zero. 6) Turn Power ON FOR everything up starting from the speakers (destination) and working toward the QY100/Piano (source) 7) Starting again with speakers and working toward QY100/piano turn the output up by 10% on each device in the chain and then tap a few keys to test levels. ?Keep an eye on any clipping indicators you may have on your devices.? 8) Repeat step 7 by 10% until you feel the output is adequate. I know this doesn’t completely answer your question but it is certainly the safest way to go if you were going to try it with instruments that you are unsure of the output levels/impedance. The really best answer I can give is to fully understand impedance matching by reading this article, which I have not fully read yet, hence my somewhat vague safety first answer: Hopefully someone will chime in with a more concrete answer. ? (And to everyone, please correct me if any of the above steps are the incorrect order of operations when experimenting…which I realize is not recommended nor optimal). -- “The longest journey starts with the first step." ?- Lao Tzu |

Re: Features where QY70 > QY100?
Looks like I missed a few....Here’s the info from Yamaha’s site about the differences:

Re: Memory Full
Not sure if someone already suggested this but if all else fails, you certainly could try re-flashing the firmware (if you can get to that menu) but keep in mind that it might brick the device.?

Re: QY100 firmware 1.38?
开云体育I have a QY100 that has the same 1.38 version. ?I think the reports of 1.37 being the latest/last firmware version are incorrect, although even Yamaha’s site lists it as the latest version.I am not sure what (if any) differences there are between 1.37 and 1.38, but my guess is either it was a minor bug release version or perhaps a firmware that Yamaha applied to the last QY100 batches that were manufactured, but never published the firmware publicly. ?? QY100 firmware 1.38?
I just booted my QY100 into test mode for the first time, and it looks like this:
*QY100 TEST*
? MAIN ROM Ver=1.38
? SUB? CPU Ver=1.00
Everything I've read has said that the last QY100 Firmware was 1.37, so I'm wondering how this one has 1.38.? Does anyone know anything about it, or how it's different from 1.37? |
