Re: Drum Machine recomendations

Michael Miccoli

I have an Alesis SR-16 drum machine.? It is great.? It has over 220 sounds on board.? It has dynamic articulation on 12 pads.? That means you can play it like drums because the harder you hit the pad the different the sound.? It is less than $200 and is fully midi capable.? It really is nice.? Check it out at .

Hi
If you have a sampler, perhaps just look at getting an old hardware
sequencer, like one of the Roland MC series: MC50, MC300, even the
dreaded MC303 will do the job! But: the MC303 only has internal
storage for 50 patterns and no disk drive.

Drum Machine recomendations

does anyone know much about drum machine models? i'm looking to pick up the cheepest thing i can that:
1) has a 16step sequencer editable in realtime
2) does midi out
3) can synch to other drum machines (of same make/model or other)

internal sounds are not of consideration (got a sampler, etc), i'm going for the basics here (looking to do it for a real time electronic "drum circle"). the ER by korg would be an obvious choice but i'm wondering if there is anything older/cheeper that can also get the job done.

has anyone used Beatpad for palm pilot? i've been considering that . . .

anyway, any tips would be apreciateed, thanks!

Is it me, or am I the only one really wetting his pants with this
instrument?

Honestly, I sold my DX7 so many years ago...as it was my first
synthesizer, but now, with this new desktop unit, I can hardly wait!
I hear it will accept ALL DX7 patches in a SysEx format !! Imagine
how unending that could be!!!!

Has anyone seen the DX200 anywhere for sale? I've seen it in
catalogs, but when I call, they say it hasn't been shipped.

Mod Wheel -> LFO control

I was wondering if the DX7 (original model) mod wheel can be used to control
LFO or any kind of envelope effect? It appears that it can somehow be
connected (manual pg 42) but I'm not grasping it too well. Thanks in
advance.

To be honest, I was pretty interested in the DX200, but while waiting
for it to appear in stores (I still haven't seen it yet), my
curiosity with FM grew and I was fortunte enough to come across a
nice old FM module with four separate audio outputs. So I've been
enjoying this instead. Still, the 200 looks nice and compact for
sketching ideas out or for live work.... plus those hands on FM
controls....

Good advice Sonia!

I'm pretty new to FM programming, but have found this to be the best
approach. After a while you kind of build up an intuitive sense of
what its all about! Thanks to everyone who has commented on this
feature of programming (level scaling) as it has helped put into
words something that I only had a few sketchy ideas about. :0)

While I can't help you here, Nick, I used to have a DX7 with the RAM
Cartridge. That was long before SysEx Dumps, though.

Thank god for SysEx.

If you are using the original DX7, or any other for that matter, you can
fake keyboard splits with scaling by creating multiple 2 operator sounds
within an algorithm and using the scaling to have one sound at the low end,
one at the mid, and one up high. Or, using algorithms 1 through 4, you could
have two three operator sounds that cross fade across the keyboard. It's a
cool effect mixing pad/strings with bass/vibe sounds.
Hope the helps a little more

I believe that "keyboard level scaling" raises or lowers the amplitude
(loudness if you are working with a carrier) of an operator depending on
what part of the keyboard a note is played on. You have linear
(straight) and exponential (curved) scaling, positive and negative (raise
or lower amplitude). You set a center key, (C4 or whatever key you want)
then you can specify how an operator gains or loses amplitude when a note
is played above or below that point. The diagram illustrates this.
Hope this helps.

keyboard level scaleing autamaticcally djusts the ouput level of the Modulators in an algorithm, according to points on the keyboard that you can specify, the diagrams are your best friend, they are a graphic representation of the algoritims, stick with it, you won`t regret it ! :)

this DX7 programming aint as hard as everybody says...
that said, I haven't got very far!

just a quick one tho: what is "keyboard level scaling"?
and what does the diagram printed on the KB mean?

But does anybody idea how to integrate (? conect, syntetizate ?) two

Re: it aint so hard

Level scaling reduces the volume of higher notes, useful in imitating
string or wind instrument sounds. Don't know about the diagram, I've
got a DX-100.
