DX7 editor for Win9x. Sound Diver or Midi Quest are too expensive for me. I think it is a shame that Yamaha has not created an "official" editor. The DX7 is Yams bestseller. My own editor is in development and not ready for public use. Im thinking about a Cakewalk MFX plug-in version. What are you think about this? When all is done I will release it as freeware for public use. What are your experiences with Sound Diver. How good is the DX7 implementation. For myself I have only a special made OEM version for the Access Virus and I have to say I love it. Bye, Bob ----- Original Message -----

The approach that I have been using for FM programming is to do a little bit of research to understand what it is and how it works then to get straight into programming with a software editor. Using an editor, you can see most of the parameter information on screen, which helps you to understand the way everything interacts. I also find it useful to focus on programming a particular type of sound for several days (eg: basses) and then proggress on to another type of sound (eg: kick drums)... While programming basses I methodically worked through each of the available algorythms, striving to create a decent bass sound for each one. Hope that's of some help. Adam |

Re: FS1r, SY77, EX-5?
Your making me think I need to buy an SY77? What's the keyboardaction like on the SY-77/99? The key action of the SY77/99 is the same as the DX7ii keyboard. The best synthesizer keyboard ever made. Or would I be better off with a TG77? What does the PCM section soundlike, and how does this interact with the FM synthesis?PCM (AWM) can be layered or convulted with FM. A sampled waveform can modulate the waveform of one or more operators simultaneously. Not as usable as it may sound. TG77 and SY77 PCM ROM memory is identical. Pretty mediocre by today's standards. SY99 PCM is much cleaner and better. But the greatest improvement is the awesome FX section of the SY99. The DX7 patches can not be loaded from floppies to the SY77/99 . But there is a convertor program which takes care of that. |
double patches/dx200
hi
i recently bought a new yamaha dx200. this synth is capable fm synthesis, as wellas reading "old" dx7-patches. after looking around i found many patches in a format the dx200 does not support. that means bank file with size of 4096 or 4104 bytes are read correctly but these banks destroys the user bank (sequencer wise) of the dx200. i end with writing a bank to single patch converter and send one patch to the dx200. that works! (it changes only the [actual] patch [in the temp buffer] and not the sequencer data) and just for curiossity i throw all my patches into an array and found out, that many of the patches are double. so, my question is, how is it possible to avoid double patches? how is it possible to make categories for all patches and to find them faster... and, last question random patch generator... my idea is to scan all patche and to find the min and max entra of all parameters, ordered by algorithm. i'll try that. regards, nina ps: all stuff is written in java, basically it changes the format from vmem to vced. i can post the routines later... |
New to list and FM...
Hello All
My name is Adam. I've recently gotten hold of a Yamaha TX816. Its basically a rackmount FM machine that has up to 8 DX7 quivalent modules inside it. They are known as TF1 modules. My one has 4 of these TF1 modules. Each one can be detuned for chorusing effects between the modules. Its quite a rich sounding monster! Not having had any experience with FM programming I've actually set up another list, before coming across the DX list. However it differs to this one as it is not specifically aimed at any one synth or manufacturer, but encompasses all machines that are capable of generating FM timbres. It is intended as a support base for anyone who programs FM sounds, regardless of what equipment they are using to acheive this. We have recently been holding a fascinating discussion with one member who is designing his own 6 operator analogue FM synth. My main aim with the list was basically to learn how to program FM! If anyone is interested in programming discussions please drop by! This list seems like a valuable resource for owners of Yamaha FM synths. If I get into any tricky situations with my TX I'll probably be harrassing you all here for help!! Thanks Adam |

hello, to you, and other peoples on the list.
I am knewly subscribed in this group, but have come from time to time check the newsgroups and some yahoo lists too. there are things that are interesting in this post, even if your terminology and the way you put arguments is probably to be improve (soon, I am sure). First, pardon me for getting my two cents on this topic, i have to say that your array does not complete any previously known facts for most people, but it was just a "first try" wasn't it?? Second point, you name good sources, put don't seem to be able to link them. I just wanted to point out, for you should be interested ,that MidiOx now supports the COM interface of MS Windows (98-ME), and that it is a good way to take control of your midi datas, if you have basic knowlegde of VisualBasic scripting. To finish this (quiet long) post,I personnaly ,for my TX81z have read the manual, wich is far more complete than the TX802. The "encoreelectronics" company ,wich appeared in an other post has a web page where you should find each and every parameters for your synth in Hexadecimal, included is the AN1x. A universal midi translator , as you wrote, would be an incredible software. Tell me, and the world, if you succeed in making somethig of that taste. Friendly. Graphical/physical editing
First thing to do, when trying to make a good looking post to a list
is probably spelling correctly . Corrected array : -----------------------------------------------------------------VSAMPLER x (x) FMHEAVEN x x Keyfax ? ? ? ? t b c.. -------------------------------------------------------------------sooorry, phonetic :) |
Graphical/physical editing
topic is far to be close, but I' ve found many editors on both soft
and hardware side that possibly "do" the DX. Maz virtual sampler C.ferrari's FMHeaven on the soft side, and on the hardware side, The doeppfler pocket controllers, the Keyfax fatboy, the knobby at encoreelectronics, Bitstream at waveidea, and the almighty an1x. ----------------------------------------------------------------- ITEM READ sysex send CC savesysex is good looking VSAMPLER x x FMHEAVEN x x ------------------------------------------------------------------ Doeppfler ? ? ? ? Keyfax ? ? ? ? Knobby ? ? ? ? Bitstream ? ? ? ? AN1x ? ? ? ? tbc.. ------------------------------------------------------------------- For what I know, Fmheaven is certainly the clearest interface of all the above. But I 've sent an e-mail to Mr Ferrari, who told me I was wrong thinking to use it as a stand alone editor, that it was an interesting idea though, and that my english was quite readable. (very nice man) Vsampler seems nice to, and i've tried the v2.1 version, and believe many improvals have been made since. Also, on this side are emagic sounddiver, and Midiedit. haven't tried them. For the hardware side, correct me if am wrong, the Fatboy v2 isn't "user serviceable" on the sysex side.. The bitstream should IMVHO match the purpose of all editing, but is a bit pricey..and not well distributed in music shops..it' creator did a DIY version, providing schematics and components lst for download, but it seems to have become unsupported, this page have been removed from the site..I still got them, but even this version needs a preprogrammed chip, and I don't believe it to be (the DIY) freely configurable. On the other side, synths like the AN1x should have a good potential in editing continuous controllers, but sysex beeing what they are, it makes the use of an (unexisting at my knowledge) "Mididata translator" necessary. For the An1x, Many controllers can be edited directly from the knobs of the pannel, and pressing this knobs makes an other layer of parameters possibly available.(I believe there are six or eight layers available per knob). What would be interesting is to get the sysex data send for each of the (in case of the an1x) knobs, and try to make them match the editing parameters of the DX's synths. I haven't checked yet the implementation for that, but maybe a utility such as midiox can make the game. Then, using a dedicated software, to have a logical string that automatically make both of the datas to say "hello" each other, instead of having this bourgeois attitude of "no sorry, I 'm an exclusive data you know.." Well.. for what it's worth.. |

luv your patches for the An1x ! sorry i can't be of any help with this german stuff, but I know a french one whose chip is programmable via a PC editor.should be at www.waveidea.com I wait for some good knowledge to try making my own...also I try to make a merge for Midi..but hey..solely human ;) I would be Very interested for some knobs to tweak, too..I have not tryed yet, for either my two welcomed at home txs802 and 81z, to use the An1 for.(mucho parameters to read). A dedicated unit maybe would be better, and this pocket one seems nice, indeed. cheers. Jeremy. --- In YamahaDX@y..., mango <j.kolling@c...> wrote:

Yep, it's cool to have a knob-box to program synths that don't have em ;) I've found out that the Pocket control doesn't "answer to" System Exclusive messages, so it's not really usable for the DX synths, BUT! there is one that does everything (CC, SysEx, PN, NRPN) but it's a little more expensive, it's the encore electronics Knobby and Slidemate (www.encoreelectronics.com). If you download the editor you can see how i works with the DX7, pretty neat ... but still, a bit pricey. ;) Mango / Joel dbase789@... wrote: hi.. |
