experience in the field

I just got back from using my FT-857D and FC-40 in N. Maine on a
canoe trip. I used the FT-857D on battery (with a 14W solar pannel)
and the FC-40 connected to a random wire (~30-33m) most of the time
only about 10-15m high. I was using a sling to string the wires up
in the trees so I couldn't get too high. I also used about 25m of
counterpoise running on the ground.

I was able to get tuned fairly well on 20m and most of the time on
40m. 80m was generally a problem with the tuner as I got HSWR most
of the time. I didn't think 33m was close enough to 1/2? (40m) for
it to be a match problem on 80m.

Does anyone know the range of impedences that the FC-40 can match?

Another thing that I noticed is that on 80m my carrier would have
practically little SWR but my voice modulation (LSB) would peak the
SWR.

I also had some complaints while QSOing across the Atlantic about
QSB. This may be the becuase of the FT-857D sutting down due to HSWR
peaks.

I also tried using the FC-40 with a 5x10m vertical loop 2m off the
ground. This had the same tuning characteristics.

I'm constantly in a state of confusion. ;-)

Is it better to use a varable length antenna system, like a
Screwdriver, than to use a random length wire/tuner coupler?
I use an ATAS-120 with my FT-857D in my truck and am really happy with it. I know there are better screwdriver antennas but the ATAS-120 is simple to install, and works right off the bat. Press the "tune" button wait a few seconds, and you're ready to transmit. It is cheaper than any other screwdrivers I've found, especially when you add in adapters to be able to tune from the "tune" button. It fits under the parking garage at work, and I've made a lot of 17M SSB DX & 40M SSB contacts with it. I've ordered a tuner for my FT-817 so that I can change or build antennas to suit my needs. I've never been all that interested in building antennas until about 6 months ago. Now I can't seem to quit experimenting. A tuner is more versatile than a screwdriver, and from the demonstrations I've seen, a tuner can be faster. So "better" depends upon your needs.

I have a FT857D, I've passed the General written exam, & have about
got the code...(Yes, I know that it's been proposed dropping the code
requirement, & Yes, I still want to learn it.) I'm about ready to
start seriously building or buying my HF antenna(s), I'd like to
start on the right foot.
Great. I upgraded my ticket to General in April. The 5 wpm exam is not impossible as some would like you to believe. I have a website I put together (nothing fancy) to explain what I did to learn the code. After I upgraded I had several requests for help. You can check it out at: I was really proud of myself for passing the code exam...I knew eventually the code exam would be dropped, but wanted to pass code instead of being handed HF privileges. Some would say that 5wpm=handed. Somewhere along the way I started enjoying copying code. Although I've not used it on HF yet I hope to start soon.

Even if they dropped the code exam a few months after I passed the exam I still will have the satisfaction of having passed. I know several Technicians who told me I should have just waited instead of putting myself through the torture of learning code. (One has been waiting for 2 years now. He bought a brand new FT-100 a couple of years ago) But I'm having a ball on HF! And they love hearing that I worked Nicaragua and Costa Rica and that I worked Maine on 2.5 watts & California on 5 watts last week.

Good luck passing the exam!

Bruce

I'm pretty new at this, been reading up what I can about tuners &
stuff. I'm also a bit overwelmed by all the advertising about this
tuner, that tuner, and I'm a little confused...

Is there a difference between a "Tuner" and a "Coupler" or do the
terms meaning the same thing?

Does a tuner or coupler tune a wire into resonance? Or does a tuner
or coupler match impedence?

Is using a tuner or coupler merely "presenting" a radio a low SWR
even when it is working into a mismatch?

Can a tuner or coupler make a less than optimum antenna more
efficient; can it increase gain?

Is it better to use a varable length antenna system, like a
Screwdriver, than to use a random length wire/tuner coupler?

I have a FT857D, I've passed the General written exam, & have about
got the code...(Yes, I know that it's been proposed dropping the code
requirement, & Yes, I still want to learn it.) I'm about ready to
start seriously building or buying my HF antenna(s), I'd like to
start on the right foot.

These questions I've stated will go along way toward the decisions I
may make.

Inquireing minds want to know...

Thanks in advance for any inputs that may come...

OREST ZAJAC

I GOT MY FC-20 WHEN I PURCHASED MY FT-847 AND IT HAS WORKED WELL ALL
OF THE TIME. IT, OR THE FT847 DOES HAVE A COUPLE OF QUIRKS. IF I
SHUT OFF/DISABLE THE TUNER WITH THE TUNE BUTTON ON THE 847 AND SWITCH
BANDS FOR EXAMPLE 20M TO 17M, THEN TURN ON THE TUNE BUTTON THE TUNER
TRIES TO TUNE AND THE TUNER ICON GOES AWAY. IF I TRY TO XMIT ON THE
NEW BAND I GET HISWR INDICATION ON THE FT-847. I THEN GO TO 10M, HIT
THE TUNE BUTTON, THE TUNER TUNES AND THE TUNE ICON STAYS ON. AS LONG
AS I DON'T HIT THE TUNE BUTTON AGAIN, I CAN SWITCH BANDS AND THE
TUNER TUNES AUTOMATICALY AS IT SHOULD. DOES THIS HAPPEN ON OTHER
YEASU TUNERS OR IS IT JUST MINE? IT ONLY SEEMS TO CORRECT ITSELF
WHEN I TUNE ON THE 10M BAND.
ALSO HAS ANYONE FIGURED OUT A WAY TO USE THE FC-20 AND CAT CONTROL AT
THE SAME TIME?

also the metal shield or metal ring on the connector has continuity

Re: FC 40 controll cable

Roger Baines

This eight-pin "Mini-DIN" control cable appears to be similar to the Apple
Macintosh serial printer cable for their ImageWriter printer but, like most
bi-directional printer cables, one or two wires are crossed (pins 6 and 8
for the Apple) making it useless, as I discovered, for the FC-40. However,
a Mini-DIN-8 extension cable (such as the ten foot male to female
"Cablestogo.com" No. 09569) works very nicely, since the wires and pins are
straight through. This kind of extension cord is becoming hard to find as
printer cables are now USB. So far, I have extended the control cable to a
total of 60 feet with no loss in performance. Yaesu claims that the tuner
box is waterproof but I place a thick white plastic bag over it when I'm
home as an added precaution.

This info I got off Eham.net on FT 897.

YAESU ATAS 120

Tony

Hi all. Newbie here.
Just got the FT 857 and the ATAS 120 with a Comet CF530 Duplexer.
Just wondering if anyone had any experience with the ATAS 120?

It auto-tunes on most bands however a little difficult on 18mhz. All
other tune 100% 40m thru to 6m.

1st Question:
Is it possible to alter the whip length so as to work 80m?

2nd Question:
The ATAS is supposed to be fine on 2m and 70cm. However 2m is 100%
but high SWR on 70cm (SWR pops up on 857 screen)

Also the power reading on the screen for 2m is very low?

Any help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Tony de M0MTD
