Looking for Yeasu tun/lin TTL protocol 4
Hey guys, here is some history to help understand my need; in the ft8X7 and ft100 radios Yaesu was offering a mini din 8 pin connector that had 3 functions, CAT TTL, TUNER, LINEAR, through simple config in the radio, this is actually back in FT710 that brought back CAT3 via TUN/LIN minidin8 connector. between the these two groups of radios they dropped the CAT TTL function of the TUN/LIN mini din connector for a separate RS232 connector, part of that minidin8 TUN/LIN connector dual usage is a simple TTL connection using the same pin out as the CAT TTL as for the ft8X7 connector. I am looking for the commonly used TTL communication protocol to control the linear via the TUN/LIN minidin8 connector. let me be clear I am NOT looking for the Yeasu CAT protocol, I don’t think (could be wrong?) they use there CAT COMMANDS for this? let me know. specific info on the link specification (speed, etc…) would also help me. 73 Richard VE2DX

Help! My FC-40 has failed 3
My FC-40 has failed to tune my long wire properly after working flawlessly for the last 4-5 years. I did some more extensive testing and found this unique result. It tunes properly on all bands from 15 meters through 6 meters, but below that, I get HSWR reply. That’s the symptom and it’s the same with my FT-857D and FT891. To my knowledge, nothing has changed since I put it up and fastened it in my tree. It is very difficult to get to it since I can’t climb ladders anymore so I’m hoping to avoid that. With that, I have a couple questions: When these two radios are in the “Tuner” mode, do they send band data to the FC-40 or some other kind of control data? Is it possible that a pin (or two) on the control cable could fail that would cause it to not tune the lower bands? If I have to take it down from my tree, I would prefer to troubleshoot the problem myself before sending it to you. So can you recommend looking at any specific components that might cause this kind of fault, i.e., a specific capacitor or relay or something? If I can’t fix it, I will fill out the trouble report and send it in for repair, but I would love to be able to resolve this myself; it’s kind of in the amateur radio tradition. Thanks as always for your help, Harley Burton N5BFB 73

FC-50 Tuner? 4
Anyone use the FC-50 tuner yet? I have an FT-891 and the FC-50 tuner. I am still working on antennas and the the General class license, so I have not tested anything yet. Just checking in to learn about the tuner. Thanks. -Bryan KG5RBH

FC-40 Flexibility 4
I'm really struggling to settle on an antenna for my first HF rig. I'm getting some good input on a related post in the FT-450D group. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/ft-450d/conversations/messages/1635 This group may be better for some of my more specific questions. From other posts in this group I think I've confirmed that the FC-40 can tune a loop by attaching one end to the antenna post and the other one to the grounding lug even though they aren't addressed in the documentation. I'm starting with an attic installation and think I could probably string out about 40 meters of wire in the space I have. What range of frequencies cold I potentially tune with that length of loop? It also appears that a doublet on ladder line can be done in about the same way. What about a conventional coax fed dipole? Can that be tuned if attached to a balun? The thing I like about these options is that I don't think I would need to deal with a ground connection like I would with a long wire antenna. Thanks.

FC-40 & Raingutter Antenna 5
I was using raingutter antenna with my FT-897D and was able to pick up quite a lot of chatter on 20m, 40m and 80m. The gutter downspout was connected to my MFJ-898D tuner wire post and a set of 1/4 wavelength wires for 10m, 17m, 20m, 80m were connected to my tuner ground. Today I connected the 12g insulated gutter wire to a new Yaesu FC-40 autotuner and ran a 12g insulated wire to a ground rod. The tuner cannot tune any band 6m-80m and I get HSWR on the FT-897D display. At present, the FC-40 is mounted inside my garage and I am running the wires to the downspout and ground rod around the corner of the garage door together side-by-side. This was a quick-fix instead of drilling holes to the outside to bring the downspout wire and ground wire directly to the FC-40 posts. Both wires are side-by-side for about 4ft and the ground wire extend another 2ft to the ground rod. I was surprised the FC-40 couldn't tune any band, as I was able to find numerous frequencies with SWR <3, between 2-3 and <2 with my MFJ-269 analyzer. Any ideas?

Introductions
Hello all. My name is Jeff, callsign K4LMP. I just joined the group, and wanted to say hello. The moderator was interested in what type of gear I had, so I just figured I would start a post, and say hello, and list my gear. I have an FT-897D, for which I have an FC-30, as well as an LDG AT-897. I also have an FT-101EX, with the external VFO, digital display, dummyload/wattmeter, landliner phone patch, station monitor scope, external speaker, world clock, and 2m transverter. All I lack having a complete 101 station is the FL-2100B amp and FTV-650 6m transverter. I have an Alinco DX-70 mobile rig in my shack as well, with a LDG AT-100pro tuner. My mobile setup is an FT-8800, with a Kantronics TNC for mobile packet, an FT-857D for HF/6m with an LDG AT-100 Pro II autotuner. I run the K4LMP-R Echolink node, as well as the K4LMP-10 Winlink RMS Gateway. I also run the MSYS BBS on our local packet node, so, as you can see, I have several dedicated servers running 24/7 devoted to ham radio. I am in the process of putting up my 60 foot Rohn 45G tower. I joined this group, because I have the FC-30 autotuner, that I orignally bought with my 897D, just sitting in the box. It works great, as long as the SWR is not too awfully high. I thought there might be some tips to use it more efficiently. Glad to see this group, and hello to all. 73's es God Bless, Jeff K4LMP

modifying the fc30
hi ken here, has anyone tried to improve the 30 by adding extra capactors, their surface mounted and not a lot of surface ares to solder to,I built a unit with extra capacters which were switchable on the output of the 30 and it tuned a lot better with the extra caps, they only need to be paralelled up to the fitted ones, regarding the coils, they have to be in serias with the origanals,eg making the coil longer, if Ihad seen the spec of the ldg at 897 i would have gone for that one,the 30 is only 1/5 the spec of the lgd,say no more, regards ken,m3zkb,rafars 4680

fc30
regarding tuners, ive built quite a few now and to increase the range of the impedance to match top band one parrells up more capacators to increase the range of it,So has anyone tried adding more capactors to the fc30 to increase its range,regards,ken,m3zkb,rafars 4680

Yaesu 897D with FC-30 or FC-40 tuner 3
The truth is that I'm using an MFJ-929 autotuner with my 897D and having a problem that both Yaesu and MFJ are unwilling to solve. Can someone here tell me exactly how an FC-30 or 40 works with a radio like the 897D? Here's the problem: The 897 has two antenna outputs, one for HF and one for 2M/70cm. The HF goes to the tuner and the 2M goes directly to the 2M antenna. There's a cable that runs from the radio to the tuner for communications. On my radio, once I've set the two menus to enable the tuner, and using the softkeys to enable the tuner, "TUNR" will appear in the radio display showing the tuner is enabled. If I tune the freq outside the legal ham bands the display changes to "tunr" (lower case) which, according to Yaesu tech support, means the tuner is out of range. Fine. Here's the problem: with my setup when I switch to 2M, the display shows "tunr" since of course my tuner nor the FC30/40 work at 2M. But the tuner is NOT in the path so you'd think there'd be no effect, but I guess the radio doesn't "know" the tuner is not in the 2M transmission path. Question: does this cause anyone here any problem when using 2M? My 897D reduces power way down like it's protecting itself. Same with the FC-30/40? If turn off the MFJ, or remove the communications cable, or press the "TUNE" softkey to remove "tunr" from the display (AND cycle the power) then it works fine. In other words once the radio sees there's no tuner, it behaves properly. Anyone have a similar experience with the FC-30/40, or is this some fluke of using an MFJ tuner with the 897D radio? I've posted this on the Yaesu 897 User's Group, but have not received any usable solution. Thanks, Mac, AE7VK

Antenna tower cement base
Help!!??!!?? Our small club has to install a crank-up TV tower of about 30 feet and we do not know the manufacturer or any model numbers. We need some advice about how much concrete and rebar to use in the base - how wide, deep, etc. It will be in sandy soil and secure about 8 feet up to an anchored shed building. TIA! New Member with First Post 2
Just bought a new Yaesu FT-950 and FC-40 Tuner. Previously, and still in the shack, is my ICOM IC-706MKIIG and AH-4 Tuner. That setup worked just fine. I just wanted a new transceiver. I stayed with a 71 foot single wire but cannot tune on 40 meters with the FC-40. Reading eham.net, it seems that others have had smiilar problems. There may be no one length of wire that will tune all bands. The AH-4 did tune all bands. Sure will appreciate any ideas and suggestions. Very disappointed with the tuner at this point. Thanks, Dave, W5KKC
