Serial cable question 29
Hi, Can someone advise me a USB to serial RS-232 cable that works with the FT-847. I have a model with a Prolific230GT chip that does not connect. I have done several tests with a serial check software, and it seems to work ok. No luck with the FT-847 connecting tough. 73' Ron ON2RON

The CAT problem showed on the first try. I tested HamRadioDeluxe, WSJT-X, FL-Digi (FL-Rig), RATS847 and some others. Omnirig does not give any reporting if things do not work right, but have checked with SDRconsole as a Tranceiver support, wich runs on Omnirig and its says that the FT-847 cannot be connected. As I see, the problem is always no feedback from the radio. WSJT-X gives an OK, but cannot show the frequency once it is connected as other radios do. It seems all is unidirectional even if an UNI.ini file is used, as Greg mentioned, that supports the FT-847 like in Omnirig and Hamlib. 73' Ron -- Yvan

No TX or RX 12
Howdy. First off, I'm a vintage radio tech.. tubes (valves?) are my favorite things to work on. However, I have a friend & neighbor that has an FT-847 that he asked me to take a look at. Here's what I found as far as symptoms: 1. No AM at all. No TX, no RX, no reaction to PTT. Dead silent. 2. Radio is deaf on all bands. Zero receive. There is static but broadcasting a +3db signal in my shack (via my HP 8656B generator on each of the modes the radio can do, zero signal detected. At +3db, neighbors a block away should pick it up.) 3. No TX on any band or mode except FM. 3.a. TX function is activated with PTT however, there is no modulation in any mode. (This was verified both via the supplied microphone as well as injecting an audio signal into the mic jack) 3.b. FM appears to have full power (I saw 40 watts on the meter.. I didn't check to see if this was a menu setting or just max for FM.) 4. CW mode checked. (plugged in a straight key I use on other radios).. Internal keyer functions and moves radio into TX however, no power from finals. I did do the master CPU reset (held <FAST> and <LOCK> while powering up the unit. No change to listed symptoms. This is really about the extent of my testing ability with the equipment I have. So here are two questions: 1. Do any or all of these symptoms sound familiar to anyone here? 2. Recommendations for someone qualified to dig into this radio? I got ripped off on an Icom repair by an alleged radio tech some years ago and I'm pretty gun-shy when it comes to sending a radio to someone so solid recommendations are appreciated. Thanks all! 73 WC/KN2Z

Hello, Ron, I use SUCCI with FT847, Icom 725 and Icom 756pro3, never problem, use it with UCX Log and with satellite connection with SatPC32 without problems, many years. Vy 73 Yvan HB9C? The USB is reacting good to Windows 11 commands, but the FT-847 is not recognised by several softwares like FL-Digi, HamRadio Deluxe or WSJT-X. I tested it with standard RS-232 cable and O-modem serial cable, but no luck so far. I have a USB model with an FTDI chip on the way to be delivered later today. Also had an older one that also works with Windows 10 and 11, but sadly no luck with it. Mind you Windows has no problems with it and I used a serial connection software check-up that sees no problems with it. My radio is made in 1999, so I guess it is OK. 73' Ron -- Yvan

7-26-2024 Update RE: [YaesuFT847] FT-847 only transmitting on FM mode. de: W1SMS
Andrew, Good morning – I am finally getting back to my FT-847 troubleshooting. Yesterday, I performed the test of TP1003 and adjustment of T1009. I found that there is a maximum voltage of 0.572 which varies by adjusting T1009. Note that this voltage is present in RX or in TX (CW) – it just remains steady. So, what is the next step ? FT-847 use with transverter for 144 MHz from 28MHz 6
Hello all, I'm trying to research the capabilities of the use of the FT-847 with a transverter, requiring the use of 10 meters. The issue may be the requirement for opening transmit to 32 MHz to get to the top of the 2 meter band. For this transverter, 28 MHz = 144 MHz, and 32 MHz = 148 MHz. I know that it's possible to modify the FT-847 to transmit above 30 MHz, but I've seen reference to the low pass filter being a possible issue. Does anyone have experience with this, and are there any gotyas? Thanks, -- Cam, W4XXV

FT-847 Digital Modes 26
Hello All, Before I shell out the $$$ for a SCU-17 or SignalLink I have a couple questions. When using the Data IN/OUT port on back of rig do you need to also wired in the PTT circuit shown on page 19 of the User Manual. I ask because my logging and digital modes software will key radio via CAT. Or is it mandatory that when using HF Data Port PTT has to be controlled via the Data Port. I would like to use the radio on VHF/UHF data modes also and I know that going to be on the mini din. I went thru my spare parts box today and tried to wire up the Easy Digi interface to see how the radio would do on some HF FT-8. I had audio from rig to pc no problem along with PTT from HRD CAT or WSJT-X. I just could not get audio from the pc back into radio and Tx the audio. It would key radio but showed no output power on radio meter,In line power meter.

Molex plug for FT847 power. 12
Can someone give me the Molex/Waldon part number for the power plug for the FT847 (and cord mounted socket for it if you know)? FT8 and ALC 6
Hey all. Just playing around with FT8 and reading up as much as I can. Many links and how to's mention that you just need the ALC to flicker. SO I have set the PWR meter set to ALC. So in regards to the ALC dos this mean I adjust the audio to the radio till I see the first couple of squares/bars come up during transmit/tune?

FT8 and ALC
No! If I understand you right. You must set your radio settings how you want. This is not the same power as on the software. There is a scale you adjust this to change the audio level. I think it’s called the power level and it will bring your ALC down. You can have the ALC showing but set it low as you say or just disappearing but that’s your choice, personally I have mine showing a couple of bars Sent from Jeff M0UHF

General Cat control 3
Hey all. Tinkering around with an old (but newly aquired) 847 and doing what I like best and hooking up computers etc. I dont seem to be able to get any cat software to comminicate with the radio. is there a menu item somewhere that I have to turn on the cat control option in the radio? I see mention here and there googling it about a C+ or C- but not sure where that is. Any ideas welcomed
