FT8 and ALC

Hey all.

Just playing around with FT8 and reading up as much as I can. Many links and how to's mention that you just need the ALC to flicker. SO I have set the PWR meter set to ALC. So in regards to the ALC dos this mean I adjust the audio to the radio till I see the first couple of squares/bars come up during transmit/tune?

Peter,

That is exactly what I do when I use my FT847 with JS8.

Peter, correct.? After that, I use the actual power control on the FT-847 to set my output power.?

So for SSB modulation, the volume level is what sets the output power to a large extent.? So both the power output setting on the radio and the volume setting on the computer interact.? How do you determine what to set each to?? Oversimplifying things, you could have one maxed out and the other at a minimum, or vice versa, or both in the middle, and have the "same" result.? What is best, and how to determine?

I set the audio level to just barely cause the ALC to move when in transmit mode.? I set the power control on the radio to give me the desired watts out.? I use this same method for all of the digital modes I use.

Not sure that is how others do it but I've managed 7 bands DXCC and 8 bands WAS so far with digital modes, so it seems to work for me.? I've never had anyone inform me that my signal was causing issues.??

73 and have a great 2024 radio year!?

Set the level for good speech on mic gain then leave it there, pad down input level to no more than 5mV rms
