Re: FT8 - HELP!!!
开云体育Hi Rob,You need to key the rig with the TRS jack, not the DIN.? The DIN heads over to the FM world, and I don't recall it working with the HF SSB modes, though I could be wrong.? My head was getting rather flat from the wall it was hitting about then trying (as you) to get the thing to work.? Again, the rig is trying to be smart, and either over- or under-doing it.? The "quaint" (now antiquated) model of the world was using separate, external TNCs for HF and VHF digital, so they have separate jacks in the back of the rig, and "logic" to try to figure out where the audio is coming from. The PTT "signal" is an open-collector style pull-down through about a 2.2k resistor.? That goes to the Tip of the TRS plug along with the audio after a 0.1uf DC blocking capacitor.? The TRS "Ring" is the received audio that goes directly to the audio line-in of the computer. Hope this helps, Greg? KO6TH Rob wrote:

Re: FT8 - HELP!!!
开云体育What Tom said.?The 847 is centered in the "uncanny valley of engineering" with its handling of PTT.? Too smart, and not smart enough.? It apparently tries to choose the audio source from wherever PTT is sourced, so if PTT comes from the TRS jack on the back (used for HF modes), audio from that source is used.? Same for the Packet connector.? The problem comes with using CAT.? There is no way to associate a particular audio source when the rig is keyed with PTT, so it uses the hand Mike input.? That is bonkers, because the Mike is the last place one would expect audio to come from when using a computer to key the rig. So, the only way I was able to run FT-8 (et al) with the 847 is to key the rig from the TRS jack in the back, using a USB Serial dongle and its RTS / DSR pins driving a small level shifting circuit and DC-blocking capacitor. For extra credit, try combining both HF and VHF digital modes (both connectors) to a single Raspberry-Pi based "TNC".? Can be done.? Not pretty. Greg? KO6TH K6EU wrote:

Not having?AF out connected to the tip would cause the problem you are seeing.? ?I have a FT-847 running FT8 using PTT multiplexed with AF out per the manual.?? 73, Tom K6EU On Mon, Oct 11, 2021 at 9:38 AM Rob <g4ujs@...> wrote:

FT8 - HELP!!!
hi is anyone using the 847 for FT8. I've connected sound card to data in/out PTT is via CAT. i can RX stations with both JTDX and WSJT. When I hit tune the rig goes into TX but no power output..... its as if the audio isn't getting into the rig. As i am using CAT for PTT I haven't wired PTT to the tip of the data connector....is this my problem? HELP! 73 de Rob G4UJS |

Hello again Rolf......yes, I use the interface cable (forget it's number now & its hard to reach - but its the one that MFJ makes for the 939).
The only possible drawback with the 939 is that it has no swr meter. But it does work fine at 100W with both my Hustler vertical and an EFHW. 73.?? Mike. |

开云体育Hi Rolf ? I used an LDG YT847 with my FT847.? It was truly plug and play, just connect the RF to the radio.? I worked very well with my HF9V antenna.? I have since sold mine and I don’t think it is manufactured any more but you may be able to find one on ebay? ? I really liked it and only sold it when I switched my radio to an IC7300. ? Re: FT847 and automatic tuner
Hi Rolf,
I must confess that I haven't read the manual for the 929 until today... The version seems to be 1006 and the age of the unit is unknown to me since I bought it second hand. The only connections I have made to the 929 is RF in and out, no interface cable to the 847. I operate on all bands 160 to 28 and my multiband vertical isn't the best choice specially on the lower bands. On some rare occations in the winter when there is heavy snow the 929 can have problem to tune the antenna on 160. What I like the best about the 929 is the "install and forget" feature that works so well for me. 73 Nils? |
Re: FT847 and automatic tuner
Hi Nils, thank you very much for the reply. I used the MFJ 929 myself many years ago. At that time I had noticed that the firmware version in my device was a very old one and from the selection of transceivers to be connected was not identical to the firmware of the current series. At that time it was about another transceiver, which was not to be set in the old MFJ 929, but in the new firmware version (other IC). Conversely, it could now also be that the old FT847 is no longer compatible with the newer/actual firmware. Unfortunately I can't test this by myself because I sold the MFJ929 long time ago. May I therefore ask which firmware version is in use in your MFJ 929 ? Thanks for feedback 73 Rolf, DC1ZZ |
Re: FT-847 and Winlink
not exactly the same question??
but I run the TRS connection as my only audio in/out and key line for HF/VHF/UHF, lots of FT8 during the VHF/UHF contests? I also run a USB serial thingy and let it trip a small relay which pulls down the PTT line via that 2k resistor or whatever is needed I run a modded USB sound card (I removed the resistor that puts the DC on the mic line) never had any trouble, even though it is not supposed to work for VHF/UHF ( I didnt know it wasnt supposed to work when I got my first 847)? and my second one works the same way am I confused ? |
Re: FT-847 and Winlink
开云体育Hi Steven,Yeah, I'm not sure what the designers of the 847 were thinking when it came to digital operation.? It appears that they tried to have the transmit audio path follow the source of PTT (seems logical), so the two different connectors on the back (HF, VHF) need to be keyed on their respective jacks.? The audio from the other sources is severely muted.? The problem is that when the rig is keyed with CAT, both of the back jacks are muted.? I guess they figured (somehow) that CAT would be used with the hand mike?? Odd. The back jacks also use different keying methods.? The HF TRS port overloads the Tx audio line (commonly used to key an HT), while the VHF DIN port has a separate PTT pin. I was able to use CAT with the 847 a few years ago by using a high level audio source to override the muting, but that didn't seem to be a good idea long term.? The 847 does not have VOX, so your choices are to either use an interface box such as the Signalink, or configure things to use a serial port modem line.? Right now I'm using a Raspberry Pi, where, the easiest method is to use Direwolf TNC and a GPIO pin to drive a transistor buffer for PTT, but not all digital mode software understands the Pi's GPIO structure, and not all modes have Pi-compatible versions. With that intro, here's what I do.? It should be adaptable to other platforms.? I have a cable rigged up to use a modem line (DTR) from an FTDI USB serial adapter board to drive the PTT line.? The module has TTL outputs, so can drive an old TTL inverter chip (7404) to get the logic sense correct, then to a 2N2222 (as an open collector buffer) through a resistor.? The transistor's collector then tugs on the PTT line.? For VHF I use Direwolf as the sound card TNC, , but anything that can be configured to use DTR for keying should work. In order to enable the rig for both HF and VHF modes (i.e. both of the jacks on the back of the rig), I wired up a cable that connects the audio line on the HF (TRS) port, through an in-line capacitor to the VHF (DIN) port so that the VHF port doesn't key the HF port.? Switches either route the transistor's PTT output through a 2k resistor to the audio line (for HF), or to a separate wire to the VHF PTT line to the DIN port.? Very confusing to wire up, and prone to operator failure in use, but once the switches are set right it seems robust enough.? If you don't need the HF modes, you can skip the switches and DC-blocking cap, and go direct to the VHF DIN port. Or just buy a Signalink interface... Good luck! Greg? WTB Yaesu FT-847 Mic / RF power plastic knob
Hi everyone,
I am desperately searching for a replacement plastic knob for the Mic/RF control.? I am told that the Yaesu part no. is?RA0065300A.? I have enquired in loads of places, and everyone is out of stock. I enclose a pic so you can see what is missing from my faithful FT-847.? I am also aware that people call these things different names around the world so a pic tells the story more accurately. Yaesu FT847 for sale
John Geiger AF5CC
I have for sale a Yaesu FT847 HF/6m/2m/70cm all mode transceiver in very good condition. This model does 100 watts on HF and 6 meters, and 50 watts on 2m and 70cm. It also does full duplex for satellite operations and has a built in CW keyer, tone encode, speech processor, DSP noise reduction, bandpass filtering, and notch filtering, and many other features. It is a nice compact size for taking mobile and portable also.
It comes with a photocopy of the manual, the hand mic, and a very short power cord with powerpole connectors on it. It also has the original box and a CAT serial cable with it. It does CAT communications both ways and the power button works fine on it also. It also has the rare VS-1 voice synthesizer installed, but that needs 1 wire reattached to the wire harness. I am asking $650 plus shipping and can take paypal/check/MO. 73 John AF5CC |
Re: Kenwood KPS-15 DC switching power supply x FT-847
Dirk Esterline
When I first got my 847 I was using a 20 amp power supply. My radio kept shutting down unless I turned the power down. Couldn't figure out what was wrong until it dawned on me that the rig needed more power. I hadn't even bothered?to check the manual because I had used the other power?supply for years with lots of different rigs.? ? Here is what the specs on the 847 say:?Transmit: 22A @ 100W RF Output So... it may work as the KPS-15 is rated for 25 amps. 20 amps wasn't enough for mine. If it shuts off on transmit turn the power down and if things are fine it wants more power. 73 KG8JK |
