Re: Early model CAT question
It probably depends on what software (and what version of it) you're
using to drive the radio.? If you're using rigctl, there's a
separate radio model for the bi-directional and uni-directional
versions:
$ rigctl -l | grep 847
? 1001? Yaesu????????????????? FT-847?????????????????
20200509.0????? Stable????? RIG_MODEL_FT847
? 1038? Yaesu????????????????? FT-847UNI??????????????
20200509.0????? Stable????? RIG_MODEL_FT847UNI
So, the answer to your question is "yes".? Just don't expect to be
able to grab the VFO knob while tracking to make adjustments, since
the software will probably override it on the next real time update.

One of my buddies is selling his 847, but it's one of the
unidirectional models. Will I still be able to take advantage of
doppler tracking and digital modes with it? Or do either of
these require bi-directional CAT control? I'm not too
pressed about seeing the frequency on the screen, just about it
actually controlling the radio. Needless to say I've been
spoiled with USB CAT control with my 7300 for some time now.

I tried it and it works. Just connect it and use the tune button on the 847.

be interesting to know if anyone has actually tried an FC-40 (or the Mat-40 even) with an 847 successfully?

Re: I want to use a tuner for my ft847!
Thanks Spence. That was absolutely great of you to spend your time explaining that you have come up with similar logic I was thinking, so everything should be okay as you say “it has the same socket “ and it is designed for the Yaesu Radio. So why shouldn’t
it work fingers crossed?

There are 2 tuners that work with this radio. The FC-20 and the YT847. The YT847 is better in that it allows a PC connection for CAT control AND tuner funtionality. If you install the FC20, you will loose the ability to control the radio via CAT. Wither

I want to use a tuner for my ft847! Whilst I know the FC 20 is used with this radio, I don’t have one but I do have the FC 40 but I can’t seem to find any information confirming that this Radio works with any other tuner. Maybe somebody has some information out there or do I just go ahead and try it???
I have a friend who might buy my FT847 and he has a Mat40 tuner Which has beenUsed on A Yaesu FT891 and FT857 And yet again, I cannot confirm whether this will work for him. Any thoughts appreciated thank you

Re: FL-7000 Interface with a FT-847
Ho Tom,
I think you are correct, it is just belts and braces to isolate and not a bad idea.
I have just fitted a ptt socket on my K2 using two MOSFETS, the ptt transistor is rated 500vV 20 Amp so will handle anything. I did not use an isolator but not a bad Ide.

I have both but there is no band change data from an FT847 but you do
have standby for PTT. You cannot hook up the FT847’s PTT socket to the
FL7000 without safely using a buffer. You just need a cheap optoisolated
relay with short to ground. That goes to the STBY socket of the FT847 and
the buffered side to the FL7000. The ALC “from memory” is -9vdc but might
be wrong. I use mine straight though but let me double check that the -9vdc
is in the range for the FT847 as I also have the VL1000 and that again has
no option for band change other than use the F button in sequence and let
the radio auto sense band from the signal.
Other radios like the FT840 I have the band data but not the FT847.

Re: disable ptt function on rear DATA jack in the presence of isolation transformers?
Sorry skip that…… I just couldn't decipher that on a mobile phone …. So small. There should also be a 2k resistor if the equipment uses and external PTT and does not reply on the high side signal I don’t see that in your drawing.
? If you want to disable PTT then use the TX inhibit lines. If you see the attached image of the Tuner socket then you can use a resistor I believe to tie this TX inhibit to a pull up but you need to ask Andrew Lenton this as ?I believe as it was he that told me about this. I often work remote and when my PC starts up it sometimes pulls RTS or DTR (which one I’m not sure) ?high and puts the radio in TX. I?wanted this to stop as the radio could be out of band listening to something like AM broadcast etc and certainly didn’t want TX there so came up with the idea of inhibiting the TX with a remote relay and resistor. I went with a different solution I the end as my tuner was always inline unless using the CAT connection.
? Sorry for the mixup but I’ve been reading another thread and couldn’t quite get my head around something.
? Hope this helps as the TX inhibit can easily be sequenced to enable and disable.

Checking my understanding of a perceived challenge here with you all: before buying the bits and prototyping a cable...?
It seems that plugging the 847's rear 3.5mm data jack into anything with audio isolation transformers at the far end (thereby effectively dc grounding the tip of the 3.5mm plug) forces the rig into constant TX irrespective of any remote PTT settings (correct?)?
And therefore, interfaces like the SCU-17 which feature such isolation, require something like a 10nF blocking cap (depicted as C-BLOCK --||-- below) like (hope this scales) :
RIG END? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? PC INTERFACE END
? ? ? ? ? ?|----------------------------------------| TIP |RING|EARTH|------------------|EARTH|RING|TIP| ?|----------------------||-----------------------------| ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?C-BLOCK
inline to stop this constant PTT (correct?)?
is there any other way (I cannot see one in the menu?) to disable that data port PTT without rig surgery ?
many thanks and 73 de
