Troubleshooting 4
I I tried to use an aftermarket speaker/mic. This made the unit begin to power up and down repeatedly, about two cycles per second. I tried the reset procedure described in the manual. This has no effect. The speaker/mic does have a 4-conductor plug. Any ideas would be most appreciated. 73 de Jim Carroll, r K9JEC.i an aftermarket speaker/mic. FT-60R Standard Antenna- Weak RX? 18
I've recently purchased a FT60R and have been surprised how poor the RX signal of my strongest 2m local repeater has proved to be. Its marginal and quite noisy from what is a strong repeater. This HT is to replace a trusted old FT415 which always recd this 2m repeater full strength , indoors with the standard antenna. I've seen a few posts about replacement antennas for this model but is the standard supplied antenna very poor? Will check 70cm next but not impressed at all thus far. Anything obvious to check in settings?

FT-70D or FT-60
Agreed! The FT-65 is like a Boafeng. Yaesu is trying to hit the Chinese like radios for a cheaper price. Stick with the FT-60. Ron W8HBF Re: FT-70D or FT60 From: Clint Bradford Date: Mon, 27 Jul 2020 20:26:10 PDT Good info. Just avoid the FT-65 - a much LESSER HT than the FT-60R. -- Clint Bradford K6LCS http//www.work-sat.com

FT-70D or FT60 5
My FT-60 is over 10 years old and still working. However, the keyboard is fading and I just had to order another antenna from Yaesu. Also, I dropped it and broke the belt clip. But, it keeps on ticking. I pondered on getting another FT60 , in case my radio quit working.. Therefore, I decided to get the FT-70D as a backup. There are a couple of fusion repeaters in my area. My comment is – If you have no need for fusion, stick with the FT-60 as it is easier to program by hand.. I think the FT-60 is a better radio. I especially like having a separate squelch and volume controls. The battery is better. You get more extended receive capabilities and the FT-60 is built more like a tank. The FT-70 has better audio. This coupled with the great audio on fusion, this radio beats the FT-60 hands down. If I ever come upon some extra cash, I will probably get another FT-60. These are just my personal comments, so you may disagree or agree. 73 Ron – W8HBF

Question 36
I just got my tech license recently, and purchased a Yaesu FT-60R portable radio. I read and followed the instructions thoroughly with respect to locating active repeater frequencies in the 2M/70cm bands. I successfully located several repeaters in my locality. Upon tuning into an active repeater, the radio automatically detects the input/output frequencies. Then I decode and save the proper PL tone. So far so good. The problem is...when I key the mic to politely say "KC2NLB listening" or "This is KC2NLB, anyone else on frequency?" nobody seems to hear anything I say. At first, I thought perhaps they were ignoring me. At best, I heard stations say "Station trying to get in...I'm not copying any of your audio, just empty carrier". So in an attempt to figure out what was going on...I turned on my Uniden scanner and tuned it to the same repeater I was trying to transmit into with my Yaesu. It was then that I noticed...the stations were right. When I keyed up and said "KC2NLB testing", all to be heard was a silent carrier followed by the repeater courtesy tone. No voice whatsoever was coming out on the repeater's output frequency. I tuned my Uniden scanner to the repeater's uplink frequency and I did notice that I was coming over loud and clear when I keyed the Yaesu up on the uplink. I have a feeling this is all caused by some minor mistake on my part...and I'd really appreciate a pointer in the right direction...thanks. Dora

A Vac-370 Rapid Charger question. 2
?Hello All, I had some of my items placed in storage (since 2017) and now I went to the storage unit and found a box with a lot of FT-60R related items. Some batteries, and the Vac-370 rapid charger, and some other items. Naturally I brought that box home with me. Now I placed the batteries into the charger and I was surprised that for the most part the original Yaesu batteries had held their charge at 8.1v. That is 3 years (minus a couple of days) in non-climate controlled situation. One battery is not happy. I put it into the charger and it goes till 6.1 v and then the light on the charger starts rapidly blinking red. This is not an original Yaesu battery so I’m not too concerned about it. I am thinking of discharging it and then go for a full charge and see if it’s happier that way. Can the Vac-370 recondition batteries? If yes, how do I make it do so? Also, does anyone have a manual for the Vac-370? I looked online and all the sites look shady enough not to stay to download anything. Thanks in advance for any advice. 73, Wassim WN6WJN Sent from a device that appears to "work"?

FT60 Setting for Wires 7
The FT-60 contains a setting for a discontinued Internet Service called WiRES . We are *not* referring to Wires-X which replaced. it. The manual on page 61 discusses this setting. Including how to turn it off and on. There is a URL for more information Take the URL and it plainly states this is a discontinued feature. I have tried to turn mine off. It is putting out a tone at the beginning of all transmissions. It was caught be on of our Senior Elmers tonight. I am not able to turn the one off on my radio according the the manual. Any help is appreciated. 73 de KEoZUW John

CTCSS on TX but DCS on RX? 3
Hi folks. Apologies in advance for what is probably an odd question. Can I program a memory channel to transmit with a particular CTCSS, but look for DCS on receive? I'm thinking this might be a nice way to work with my Allstar node. Thanks, Chris

FT-60 programming 16
Several years ago, I purchased my FT-60. I played with it for a few months then put it up trying to find an easier way to program it. Life went on. Now I'm preparing for an extended trip around south east US. I purchased RT Systems Radio Programming Made Easy. After a cursory overview, I think I may need Radio Programming for dummies. Anyone out there willing to help this old man program his FT-60. I'm interested in all aspects ie repeater connection near the I30/I40 Corridor and near major stops such as Little Rock, Nashville and Ashville. Thanks, 73s Pete KD5CDB

Radio Won't stay on Busy Channel During Memory Scan
Hi folks. I have resume type set to "busy", and yet, the radio resumes scanning again, after staying on a busy frequency for several seconds. What other options might be causing this? that I should check? I have exactly 100 channels programmed, all in a single bank. Is there some sort of dual-watch or priority scan type feature I need to turn off? Thanks for any help, Chris P.S. As much as I love my Kenwood THD-74A HT as well, I did some weak signal comparisons between it and the FT-60R using the same fixed outdoor antenna. In all cases, what was too noisy to be intelligible on the Kenwood, was still crackly but entirely intelligible on the Yaesu.

Rig to Rig Cloning 13
Apologies if this has been covered! I have a 60R, VX5, and a FT2DR. My question - can I clone from one model to another (i.e.; 60R to VX5) or does cloning only work between the same models (60R to 60R)? Terry - km0u

Will, At the bottom of every email from this list is a set of links to list resources. The one you want for this is Contact the List Owner. I own 3 lists in different fields. Easy to do. Most list owners appreciate the pointers that something hit. I am pleasantly surprised, given the amount of list traffic, to only see one got by the software in the 2 months I’ve been around 73 KEoZUW - John

Switching to AM for Aircraft Band? 15
Hi. Anyone know how to switch to AM when punching in frequencies on the aircraft band? I hoped the radio could be smart enough to switch on the fly, when you enter a frequency between 108-136, but mine stays in FM. Thanks Chris
