FT-60 Commander Alternate Write Mode

Pretty much everyone who uses FT-60 Commander knows that the "Alternate Write Mode" is often needed to successfully write to the FT-60. Does anyone know what that magical setting actually does?

I'm trying to get Chirp working, and I can read, but not write. This seems to be a common issue with Chirp and the FT-60, and I feel like it is perhaps a flow control issue or something like that. I also think that the Alternate Write Method in Commander was there specifically to address that, but without knowing what it actually does, that is just speculation.

Any input would be appreciated!

That sounds like the issue I had with a cable with a Prolific (sp?) chip set.? I was actually able to get it to work some of the time, but not very often.

I bought a cable with an FTDI chp set in it, and it works every time.

Matt,
I have and am using CHIRP to read and write successfully to my FT60, including to
"bands" to set up different "FT60's" but still have an issue switching bands quickly, I
attribute that to my advanced age.

Matt,
Must admit to using linux mint which is not fussy
with cables! Win 10 and 11 need newer prolific chips.
My new (2022) wouxun cable is good, and the one l made following
Miklor instruction several years ago. Linux is less fussy.

A lot of Prolific cables have fake Chinese chips in them. The latest and greatest Windows drivers are designed to make these cables not work. Try rolling back your driver to 3.2.0.0. ?You can find this and a lot more info at www.miklor.com.?

Excellent web site.?

I have personally experienced three instances of FT-60R being "fatally frozen." That is after selling hundreds of them while working for the planet's largest amateur dealer, and also owning six.

Two were bricked during CHIRP sessions. And the third wss just DOA.

Just to sort of close the loop on this...

I'm using an FTDI cable.

I tried emailing Bill, but got no response.

It seems that no one besides him knows what the Alternate Write Mode does. The actual bytes that Commander is sending to the radio are identical to what another program (that isn't working) sends, so maybe it's something with the timing or....um...something else.

Thanks anyway for all of the replies.

Commander Software works at all of my FT-60R HTs. That's eight out of eight. So your problem is either the cable, or something has been done to the radio to make it different.
