No one hears me

Hoping for advice. I can program the radio for repeaters, and yes set the tone as needed. I hear everyone else just fine. But when I push PTT, I get the 3-tone startup sound and no one hears me. All they get is dead air.?

There's no WiRES icon visible.?

I refer to Page 64 a lot - where the factory reset instructions are. I reset and reprogrammed 2 repeaters again today, and still nothing.

Suggestions?

Many thanks,
Judy

What is your battery voltage?? Do you have any other chargers or cables connected to the FT-60 when you are trying to transmit?
Pressing PTT and having the radio reboot (the three tone startup beep) usually means insufficient voltage, either because the battery is low, dead, or an external power supply with insufficient current is plugged in (like the wall wart charger).

Does the display blank out when you hit the PTT? ?If so, your battery needs charging. When you turn on the radio, it should display around 8.4 volts. Do NOT have it on any chargers when you do this.

When I start up the radio, it shows 7.4 volts. Don't I have to wait until the low battery symbol comes on before recharging, to avoid damaging the battery?

Look at the "S" meter when you push the PTT, like someone else said. Your battery may not be able to take the load of transmit.
I had the same problem and found that I had burned up my OEM battery pack by over-charging and so my battery could not support the load of transmitting. Don't leave it on the OEM wall-wart charger as you will quickly burn up the battery since it is not a "smart" charger.?

You can charge at 7.4 volts, just don't overcharge it. You cannot transmit while plugged in unless you are using at least around 3 amps. The wall wart or rapid charger will not work.?

I admit it, I usually charge overnight. How long does a full charge take?

The manual should say. Are you using just a wall wart or a rapid charger? ?When the radio says it is done charging, unplug it. If on a rapid charger, the green light will say when it is done and most chargers go into trickle mode.?

With the exception of yeasu's SBH-13 rapid charger. ?With this one (I have two of them) the red "charging" light simply goes dark and the chargers shift into "float" mode. ?No green "ready" light.

The usual reply to "how long" has to be "Until it is charged." That doesn't help much but the accurate answer requires a seriously complex response that is tied to the battery chemistry. I am a chemist but battery chemistry is one of the most complex of all the sub-specialties and I have worked with several battery chemists and they have attempted to explain some of the intricacies and failed, with me, at least.
The practical response is to wait to charge until the little battery symbol appears then charge for 10 hr and no longer.? This is complicated by the fact that the symbol may appear when it is least convenient and you are in the middle of an activity. The response to that is "carry a charged spare and install it when the battery symbol appears".? That means, of course, that you need 2 packs and you rotate them. Nobody tells you this in the "FT60 operations course" you took.
What? You didn't take that course? Well, neither did I because, as far as I know, it was never offered. It seems we learn these things through experience - which, of course, means mistakes.
In my case, I thought the FT60 unit itself limited the charge current when the battery pack was charged. Not! The stupid wall wart at 10V+ pushes more through that battery until it overheats and deteriorates the chemicals in the cell. Uggh!
The relatively low price of the FT60 limited the features they could include and one feature left out was "smart charging" either in the unit itself or in the desk-top charging units. Smart charging involves thermal regulation and cell internal resistance monitoring, which, although not terribly complex, do require additional active electronics that were not included in the original FT60.
I have resorted to having a standard battery pack (FNB-83) and an accessory battery case/tray (FBA-25A) into which I fit 6 relatively modern 2300mAH NiMH cells so that when the "Battery Symbol" appears I remove the cells and charge in a smart NiMH charger that avoids overcharging. You could, of course, buy another FNB-83 and have two on hand but I was cheap and wanted to go the route I mentioned. Besides, with the individual cells you can have seriously greater capacity than offered by the 1400mAH cells in the FNB-83.

Thanks to everyone, your support is most appreciated! I charged the battery overnight and it was at 8.4 when I turned it on this morning, and was able to transmit no problem. After half an hour it was 8.1.?

I'm heading to HRO tomorrow to get two new batteries, plus a backup that takes AA batteries.

For several years now, I have relied on the 2300mAH Eneloop brand NIMH cells?in the FBA-25A?accessory battery tray?for main use of my FT-60, and the 1400mAH cells in the FNB-83 as my back up.?? I charge all six AA cells before a weekend of activity, and carry the FNB-83 only in case I run down the AA's.? So far, I've operated up to three days of active talking without needing the backup cells. I now have another battery tray on order and wil fill it?with 6 charged Eneloop AA's and leave the FNB-83 in the glove box of my truck.
