Re: FT-60 and Memory Bank Programming
Two things: a) I have attached the example that did not come through the other day. b) I describe the steps I use to set up a Bank below
That's it.? One thing to note: you do not need to perform the steps of item 4 for all memories that you want to assign at one time; you can come back and add more memories/perform steps 4 later. It really is that easy. This is all covered in the "FT-60R Operating Manual" on page 33.? That page also described how to use/activate a Bank or to not use any Bank. Although I do not have the RT Systems software and cannot describe how to set up banks with that software, I can describe how FT-60 Commander does that (because that is the software I have).? Please note: I am not suggesting FT60 Commander is better: it merely is the one I have. Attached you will find my screen capture of the FT60 Commander software operating window which did not come thru?for you the other?day.? This software is easy to use,?and even easier?than the manual steps above. To add or remove a given memory to a Bank, I merely click on the cell in the memory's row and in the column of the bank of interest.? For example, the cell in row 3 for Bank 1 (which is just labelled "1") has been clicked and an X is shown.? This means the settings for "W4CDA" are assigned to Bank 1.? The X in column 10 shows W4CDA is also assigned to Bank 10.? The blanks in the columns for Banks 2 through 9 mean W4CDA will not be accessible (i.e. will be hidden) when any of those Banks are selected/enabled.? I suspect RT Systems software is similarly easy.? Again, the key is to store the settings in a memory location and then assign that memory location to a Bank; you do not store settings into a bank. The steps for the FT60 Commander software are simple:
How do I use Banks? I have one Bank with all my local frequencies assigned to it.? When I am participating in an event such as a Wine and Cheese?Festival, a Bicycle Ride, or something else, I assign the memory locations of the frequencies that the event will be using and only those locations to Bank 10.? When I get to the event, I activate Bank 10.? If I want, I can even have the radio scan just the event's frequencies.? How? When Bank 10 is enabled, the radio can only access the frequencies in the memories assigned to Bank 10 I use banks in another way.? There are three ways we identify frequency assignments in my area. One is obviously the?frequency.? The second is the?callsign. The last is the, hmm, code name or the function such as Red, Gold, <city>TAC, <city>MSG. I duplicate the settings for each frequency assignment into 3 separate memory locations providing a different Name or Tag for each location: frequency, callsign, and code function.? For example, one local repeater is on 146.230 with a -600kHz offset and a 100Hz CTCSS tone for transmit and for receive.? I store that once in memory location 11 with the tag "146230", a second time in location 311 with the tag "N6NFI", and once in location 711 with the tag "HOSPTL".? This means the radio transmits and receives the same way for these three memories.? The only difference is what I see on the radio's display. I assign memory 11 to Bank 1, memory 311 to Bank 2, and memory 711 to Bank 3.? When I am in a situation where the Net Control is discussing frequencies, I enable Bank 1; when callsign is being discussed, I enable Bank 2; when tactical/usage/codeword, I enable Bank 3.? And finally, when I am working an event that only uses a few frequencies, I assign memory 11, 311, and 711 to Bank 10 (along with the other frequencies the event is using as I described above).? When I enable Bank 10, all 3 memories cause the radio to operate the same way yet when I turn the selector knob I can see all 3 tags.? Very useful when the event participants are, ahh, casual when discussing frequencies -> I can easily figure out what to do without translating. I hope this helps Andy KI6SEP p.s. Are you affiliated with the California Depart of Fires?? If so, I may have a contact within the group who might be able to help you in person. Re: FT-60 and Memory Bank Programming
I agree: the FT60 is the easiest radio to program. We've programmed ours using a computer and manually. Easiest both ways. ("We" being my YL, our sons, and me) I've observed that people who have problems with it typically have a preconceived idea of how it should work & try to force the instructions to fit those ideas. One example are people who "know" the Banks store frequencies & settings. Once these people actually succeed in programming the radio, they understand the radio Andy On Fri, Aug 2, 2024, 22:51 JARDY DAWSON via <JARDY72=[email protected]> wrote:

Yes Andy, please send it as an attachment.

The R.T. Systems software was supposed to make programming the FT-60 easy to understand and simplified, as opposed to doing this programming manually. I don't even want to think about how challenging this would be, manually(!)
?
The FT-60 has been around for 20 years now; I know why no one has offered a YOUTUBE video on this subject in all those years. Whew... |

RT systems is saying that no memories have been assigned to that bank.?? ?
To a point this is correct. You cannot use any of the?banks because you have not initialized any of them. You have to assign one or more memories to a bank for that bank to be selectable (you are saying "use" while RT says "select").? Performing a factory reset clears the contents of all banks.? Therefore, you cannot select any bank until you assign memory(ies) to it.? Actually not being able to select an empty bank is a good thing because, as RT Systems states? "The radio will now operate as if it is programmed with only the channels in that memory bank":?if the radio allowed you to select an empty bank, the radio would not operate.? The radio would operate as if it is programmed with nothing. ?
This is a poor analogy but it is the best I can come up with at the moment.? If somebody gives you driving instructions on a sheet of paper but the paper is blank, the instructions are "unuseable".? An empty bank is a blank sheet of instructions. ? I am guessing, perhaps incorrectly, that you still are thinking you place frequencies and other settings into a bank.?? You assign memories (or channels as RT Systems calls them) into a bank.? Each memory can be placed in zero, one or more banks.? Each memory location can contain the frequency and settings for only transmit and one receive frequency.? On the other hand, a bank can have multiple memories assigned to it. A bank can access dozens of frequency settings if you want. An empty bank is "unusable" by the FT60 because you haven't initialized?it.? Something else to understand. If you have a memory assigned to a bank(s), if you change the settings in that memory location, you do NOT need to change anything in the banks.? Let me try an example.?? Let's say you set memory 150 as a simplex frequency and you assign memory 150 to both bank 5 and bank 10.? When you select bank?5 or bank 10, you can access the settings in memory 150.? When you select any other bank you cannot see nor access memory location 150.? Turn the selector knob with bank 4 selected, for example, you will never see memory 150.? Turn the knob when bank 5 is selected and you will see memory 150.? You then realize you should have set that up as a repeater frequency. All you need to do is to modify the contents of memory 150.? Bank 5 and bank 10 now each operate that frequency as a repeater frequency.? Why? Because the repeater settings are not stored in bank 5 or bank 10 but in memory location 150. Just like before you updated memory 150, bank 5 and bank 10 allow you to access memory 150 I hope this helps Please let me know if you want me to send the previous example as an attachment. Andy ? |

ALL MY BANKS BLINK! So I can't use any of them? I just did a factory reset!
?
How can they be unusable if I just did a factory reset? How can a bank be "empty" and be unusable??

Re: FT-60 and Memory Bank Programming
Given that you are attempting to perform a "cut & paste", I believe the manual has caused confusion for you. A memory can be assigned, registered, (pick your word), etc. to one or more Banks.? Here is an example from the display of FT60 Commander.? Some memories are assigned to Bank 1 & 2 are assigned to Bank 1 and Bank 10 On Thu, Aug 1, 2024 at 12:14?PM CalFire via <ebaniste1937=[email protected]> wrote:
