Re: Hard of hearing FT-101EX success!
Hello Richard - Just working backwords thru messages.? After much reading and thinking I think that the first RF Amp transistor is probably the culprit - although some have said another one can give trouble.? I have two concerns which are sort of associated: the only 3SK51 devices I have seen for sale over here are very expensive (and some advertised are not in fact that device.? Secondly my 101Z is in complete original condition (I bought it new 42 years ago) and I am reluctant to go unsoldering stuff unless I know it is the right device!? I have seen something that said a 40673 would replace the 3SK51 - and I have some of these from my 'construction period some 40 years ago!? No test gear so cannot go down that route.? Appreciate your interest and help. Alistair GM4ENF.

开云体育Alistair, I see the schematic attachment didn't make it intact, so if you'd like to send me an email direct, I'll get it to you.? It is 6 megs, so hope your email provider can handle that.Richard? kn7sfz@... On 2/13/2023 5:00 PM, Richard kn7sfz

开云体育Hi Alistair,I tried to find a quality manual for your 101Z online but they are all low resolution, however it is obvious that your RF board is different from the one in the FT-101EX. The good news is that their RF MOSFET amplifiers are basically the same, yours being the 3SK51 and mine the 3SK40, either of which can be replaced by the $6 NET 454 off Amazon, which I used to bring mine back to life. I have attached a high res copy of the 101E schematic and you can see the 3SK40 transistor in the outlined PB-1181 RF board.? Sorry, I have no way of highlighting it.? It is socketed, so that made replacement quite easy.? I'm sure the transistor is socketed in your board as well.? Great care must be taken that you get each of the four leads in their proper place when installing the new transistor...very difficult for these old eyes, even using a magnifying visor. Good luck on your project and hope to hear of your success, Richard kn7sfz On 2/13/2023 8:16 AM, Alistair GM4ENF

Hard of hearing FT-101EX success!
开云体育Success!!Well boys and girls, I replaced the 3N211 mosfet on the HF board with a $6 Amazon NTE454 and the little beast roared to life! Next project is to clean the relay, as it's exhibiting a slightly high resistance compared to rcvr RCA jack. This continues to be a fun and learning experience and my thanks to all of you who chimed in. The Facebook, Yootoob and email reflector resources made this saga a mostly enjoyable one! ?Be well. de kn7sfz On 2/3/2023 11:59 AM, Richard kn7sfz

Re: FT-101 Main Tuning Dial Off Frequency
Sorry for the typos,... sausage fingers.? slop ring was supposed to be SLIP RING and VFO know?as supposed to be VFO KNOB. You just hold the slip ring while rotating the VFO knob to get the 100KHz trim ring back on line, The 500KHz (black ink and red ink) disk behind the frequency window is the one you can reach in behind?and gently?turn/rotate to line back up on the vertical window? line but only after you have the VFO knob set to the frequency you "know" you are actually on. Transmit and receive frequency matching?is an entirely different?matter and I suggest you look at Buddy's YouTube site for that info Search YouTube for, The Radio Shop .... and then look through his videos for FT-101? Re: FT-101 Main Tuning Dial Off Frequency
If you are not an experienced?radio tech, you are asking for serious trouble?if you mess with either of those trimmer caps in the VFO compartment I am a bit confused?as to what you are trying to do but: The flat disk behind the VFO dial is not mounted very hard and you?can rotate it with a little pressure to line it back up. It will slip. There?is even a slop ring behind?the VFO know that can?be used to accomplish a similar thing, I had one once where the previous owner turned the 500KHz disk thing almost 100KHz out of whack and sold the radio to me for $100? because?it was "so far off" as to be unusable,' It took me 15mins to fix it.? . . Re: FT-101 Main Tuning Dial Off Frequency
Bruce, I can't find anything listed anywhere but it looks like TC1 adjustment trimmer cap in the VFO should do it. I would note the position of the cap before moving it so if you need to return it back you can. I would tune the main dial to a known freq of a net for instance, and try the adjustment to bring the receiver to it. It shouldn't take much adjustment to do this if it has just aged and shifted over time. You can access TC1 by lifting the processor board that is on top of the VFO box. TC2 is the drift cancellation adjustment. TC1 should be the one you want.? 73 Don ve3ids? On Mon., Feb. 6, 2023, 1:02 p.m. mikemm58, <mmcauley@...> wrote:

Re: FT-101 Main Tuning Dial Off Frequency
开云体育Bruce,? One thing you might check is to make sure the lubberline, or the indica line is square with the center of the dial.? Sometimes the escutcheon of the front of the radio gets put back on a little askew.? I know it's a longshot, but might be worth looking at. Just a thought... Re: Schematic jpeg?
开云体育Thanks Roger, just grabbed it!I have a 46 inch flat panel monitor, which makes it very easy for me to zoom in and out and navigate the large jpeg image, which I do indeed prefer to the pdf version (I have Adobe reader). I don't believe I'll need to print it out, as that is a little more difficult with these old eyes.? It reminds me of a folded schematic I have that goes with one of my old Galaxy V transceivers.? It's about 2 1/2' tall and 4' wide, so I had to hang it in front of me and it sure took up a lot of real estate! ?? The saga of my hard of hearing EX model continues.? I checked out the bulb fuse and it was fine.? I then removed the HF board, cleaned the edge connector and and RF mosfet? (3N211) socket and still weak receive.? Then, following a well made YouTube video, checked the? mosfet with a DMM and it seemed to respond well, so I guess I won't need to replace it.? I suppose now it's time to jump in with both feet and follow the signal path after I read up a little more on how it's processed. For anyone reading this who'd like to chime in, here's where I am so far.? with a small length of wire in the antenna socket, I can barely hear my signal generator on 7.100 with no S meter movement.? When I connect the sig gen directly to the wire, it gets much louder and the S meter moves up about halfway.? The VFO seems to work fine and is accurate, as I can tune back and forth.? However, turning the preselector has zero effect in the volume or meter movement, so something is amiss there.? I'll probably post this on the Facebook group as well.? I know I'm not the first one to go down this road...haha! Thanks Roger and everyone, Richard kn7sfz On 2/3/2023 9:56 AM, Roger VE7LB wrote:
Hi Richard, I suppose that you don't have a good pdf reader as the FT-101E_Late_Schematic.pdf in the files section is high res 11 x 30 inches. I just added a jpeg version of the same file in the same folder. You could put the pdf version on a usb stick and take it to one of the printers (Kinkos?) and get a full 11 x 30 inch printed. |
