Re: FT-101ZD MK2 poor sensitivity ..

Well, the symptoms you describe are exactly what I see when I blow the lamp fuse, but I will assume you have checked it's continuity or otherwise confirmed it is OK.??

If you have the service manual, the diagrams showing signal flow in RX are very helpful.? Mine states the marker is injected right at the antenna terminal (page 2-1) and that a marker signal should be roughly 10 db over in SSB mode on 14.200 with the preselector peaked.??

The SSB/CW RX Mode signal flow on page 2-2 confirms this - the marker signal is injected before Q101 on the RF board.??

If the marker is that strong, then the fault SHOULD lie upstream of that point - page 2-8 states RF signal input goes through relay RL2, lamp fuse FH2, attenuator switch 2004 on the lever switch board, 9 MHz trap L2101 and C1207 on the Trimmer A unit, then transformer T1 to Pin 3 of the RF board.??

The marker output is on J504 Pin 2 of the AF board.? If your rig is after series 17, the new RF board is on page 5-8 of the manual but the pins look the same.

Bottom line best guess from here is a dirty RL2.? If not, then a dirty Attenuator switch on the lever switch board.??

YMMV.

Good luck, please let us know!

The S-meter barely moves on receive.

It's not the 'bulb fuse' and I tested RX with the mark signal which gives me s9+20db in the meter reading.

Are there any usual culprits? I was thinking of starting by cleaning the switches / dials with an electrical contact cleaner since a
couple of them are somewhat scratchy.

Andrew?

You could try hooking your antenna to the receive antenna jack, the little one, not the so239 main antenna jack. This bypasses the antenna relay and lamp socket. If the calibrator gives you normal receive levels, there isn't much more from that point to the antenna jack.?

Hi Andrew,
although cleaning switches is always a good idea you would be better off applying a signal to the ant socket and measuring the receive sinad before you touch anything repair wise, you may find it only needs adjustment.
if you dont have the equipment to carry out such tests i would suggest getting someone else to check it and calibrate or repair it for you.
also be very careful if working on the inside of the unit with the case removed although the 900v rail is enclosed in the faraday cage there is still hundreds of volts available on the trimmer capacitors and several other places.
When working they are an excellent radio i have one im in the process of repairing myself.

Re: FT-101ZD MK2 poor sensitivity ..

Others on here will know more but from my own recent investigations (see elsewhere also on here) the calibrator signal at that strength would appear to rule out the usual suspects of faulty RF/IF amplification devices (3SK51, J310 etc).? I bought my 101Z new 41 years ago and it has been a fantastic piece of equipment.? I have been looking for another one for some time now but with no success...? As and when you find out the nature of the fault I (and no doubt others) would be pleased to know what it was, how you identified it and how you rectified it.? Good luck.

When I was looking for these around three months ago there was somebody in the UK offering them - certainly for the ZD.? I ended up resurrecting my 40 year dormant construction activities and made my own for my ZD.? Some old double sided board, some equally old FeCl3 and some 'inexpensive'? edge connectors direct from China.??

Riser Boards for FT-101 Series including ZD in the U.K. ?

Does anyone know where I can get hold of set of riser boards for the FT-101, B, E, F Series including the ZD from the U.K?

Tried eBay but they all seem to be from the USA and delivery to the UK is a killer.

Voltage charts

Can someone help me identify the pins on Fig 4-9 in the service manual on page 4-17? Where are MJ 1-6? Pins 1-22 are illustrated on page 6-12 but I can't find them on the unit. Feeling a bit blind. And what does the "E" symbol mean on the table?

Question for Roger VE7LB

Hello again Roger.? Earlier this morning I thought I sent a 'new' message but do not see it anywhere.? Any idea what I might have done wrong?? Thanks.? Alistair GM4ENF.

Re: Gray Paint for FT-101ZD Cabinet Screws

I have found that Sherwin Williams can do a good job in matching.? Have brought in a removed door from a customers control panel as a sample and they matched it perfectly in color and sheen.? Minimum buy is 1 quart.??

Be advised not all SW stores are the same.? Try to find one that caters to commercial/industrial.? They seem to be way better.

Ok great Michael,
How do we proceed?
Send me a private email with your address details.....I'll take to the post office and get the shipping cost from Canada (shouldn't be to outrageous)

FT-101ZD Original manual

Hi all,
I have an original FT-101ZD manual.....and a full photocopied version.
But since I only have a FT-101; I'm wondering if anyone would want it?
please contact me if this is the case.

Re: Where have they all gone!

Understand. ?Lightening is not the only source of EMP. ?Certainly, your choice. ?Michael, N4KZO

Re: Where have they all gone!

Thanks again Michael.? I thought about one of these devices (or something similar) many years ago but as electric storms are relatively rare around here (one or two a year visible/audible) I decided against one.? Always disconnect antennas on rare occasions these these events occur.... Alistair GM4ENF

Re: FT101ZD3 HV Capacitors

Thanks for the feedback Nigel.? Interesting thought.? At the risk of mixing up different subject content/messages; everything except incoming signal strength is completely fine - always get good reports.? I am compiling some stuff on my investigations which I will put on original message thread in due course.? I have the voltage information, I am not a 'professional' but after a lifetime of construction/repairing I sort of know my way round circuits - trouble is access to the various test points - but that will be in stuff I am writing....? My FT-101F with front panel model # as a STICKER (?????)

Hello all from K7RAN. QUESTION... I just acquired a Yaesu FT-101F (note "F" rather than "E"). On the front panel, in the thin/long horizontal rectangle above the VFO and switches where it reads "YAESU SSB TRANSCEIVER FT-101F," the lettering is a sticker — RATHER THAN the embossed raised silver lettering I'm used to seeing. A Google images search reveals an example of the FT-101F with the usual raised lettering like we see on earlier models. My example looks exactly like that, with silver letters on a black background, except, as I said, it is a flat sticker applied to that space. I almost didn't notice at all, until I just did, hi. Can anyone shed light on this? The sticker is so professionally done, it looks exactly like a Yaesu production, except that I've never seen anything like that before. Were a few manufactured this way just before they stopped production entirely? By the way, this is serial number 8F340344. I can take a picture if anyone is interested. Any authoritative information would be appreciated! 73 from Randy, K7RAN

Hi Alistair,
At the moment no I don't but I will back in my workshop later today as I had some new components turn up so I will take some close ups of the rig.
Your problem sounds more like power supply problems than receive board, if you down load the version 3 manual from fox tango there are voltage reference pages and diagrams based on serial no.

Nigel

Re: Where have they all gone!

You are welcome Alistair. ?One other recommendation, if you haven’t done this already: install an Alpha Delta ATT3G50U Transi-Trap (TM) Surge Protector at the RF socket or somewhere in the coaxial RF feed-line. ?They use a gas-discharge tube, spark-gap cartridge (Alpha Delta calls an Arc-Plug) with gap set to allow unimpeded transmission of RF less than or equal to 200 watts, while a short-circuit occurs by breakdown, above 200 watts, per Alpha Delta Specifications. ?This will provide significant protection from electromagnetic pulse (EMP) occurrences, man-made or natural, such as near lightening strikes. ?Of course, I recommend disconnecting the feed-line altogether when any risk of any type EMP exists, and when the station is not in use. ?Here is a review:?

Here is a good technical paper discussing actual expected breakdown values of the gas discharge tubes used:?

May God bless you.
