Re: FT-101EE voltage measurements

If you want to use a high impedence digital voltmeter, parrallel the VOM? input probes with a 10k ohm resistor for up to 10 v. 50k for +10 to 50v, 250k for higher voltages. This will? "load" the circuit very close if a 1000r/1 volt sensitivity meter is required.

To measure the output of a transformer a good dvm will do the job, just remember the off load voltages will be higher than when its connected and under load.
I've just replaced the transformer on an FT101ZD3 the 900v anode feed had bad HV capacitors which caused it to burn out, if you have power problems i would definitely replace all the psu capacitors and any diodes as well, i disconnected all the outputs from the psu boards and made sure all the output voltages were perfect first and then connected the outputs one at a time and checked them as i went, it took a while to find all the bad HV capacitors in the RF power stages before i connected the final 900v section.
i still have a bit of calibration to do but all the supplies are now good.
Theres a good site that gives a lot of info on the 101EE and other models ?
although the page is mostly about conversion to different valves theres lots of highlighted parts that take you to other pages where theres circuits and other information to be had.

FT-101EE voltage measurements

Hello group,

I have an FT-101EE and am wanting to measure the various voltages off the main transformer.
What type of voltmeter is needed as far as ohms/volt is concerned? I own several. VTVMs, modern DVMs, Simpson 260 etc. Which is needed to get the most accurate reading?? I see no annotation on the schematic

Thanks

Mike

Re: FT-101Z Tuning Issue

Try exercising the switch, end to end, 20 times. If that helps give it 20 more. I find that any radio that has not been used regularly can benefit by exercising the switches. It wipes any oxide off the contacts.

Re: FT-101Z Tuning Issue

With the switch on “IC” rotating “Drive” increases the reading as expected, and rotating “preselect” moves the needle as expected. When I switch to “PO” the needle goes to 0 and stays there. I have tried to attach a video for illustration.

I agree with the below

Until you can solve the meter issue you could try:

At plate dip, power out should be max – measured on external power/swr meter - provided the final tubes are aligned ok

Then you can maximise PO with preselect and load on the same external meter

Your description of the procedure you carried out is not too clear.? when you worked through the tuning/loading process did? the equipment respond as it should?? ie load giving an Increase in Ic followed by dip when adjusting tuning.? If so have you checked using another meter/device to see if there is any output irrespective of what the PO meter is showing???

FT-101ZD changing the 2.3KHz SSB filter for a 2.7KHz filter?

Would changing the SSB filter to a 2.7KHz filter improve RX audio quality on SSB / AM?

Sadly the 101ZD has no switchable filter for AM / SSB and I've got a spare 2.7KHz Yaesu filter 'flying' around.

I heard that 2.3.KHz on TX SSB is preferable to 2.7KHz?

Thanks for the input

I had an FT-101B that had been in storage for over 20 years and fired it up. ?At first it worked and then didn’t. ?I found that there were two small diodes in the power supply that had died, actually physical broken. ?I replaced these and all was well. ?If I remember, I think they were in the enclosure that surrounds the output tubes.

THIS IS STILL AVAILABLE AND STILL A GOOD DEAL! ?I have an FT-101ZD for sale. ?It's in excellent working condition and about 8/10 cosmetically. ?It will also come with an outboard second VFO. Photos available upon request. ?I bought this from a friend who did extensive renovation. ?He's an expert in the repair of these old rigs. ?I had thought that I'd use it more than I have, and it's become excess to my needs. ?I will sell the rig and external VFO for $550, plus actual professional packing and shipping charges. ?The rig also comes with a manual and a Yaesu hand mic. ??If you've been looking for one of these old classics, you probably can't find a better one. ?I greatly prefer PayPal for payment. Undoing AM modification to restore CW operation

I am trying to un-modify an FT-101 EE to restore CW operation in a radio that has an AM filter and the mode switch modification installed. Everything seems to be OK from the pictures and directions in the service manual as far as restoring CW operation. I can do everything as far as reconnecting wires and diode except the yellow wire that goes to the heater switch from pin 4 in the AM modification. Does any one have a clue where that wire came from originally and what I should do with it? Does it just hang in the air or did it actually have a connection on the other end from the heater switch?

FR101/FL101

I HAVE THE FL101/FL101 PAIR BUT WHATS MISSING IS THE UMBELICAL CORD LINK THE PAIR , THE FL101 HAS BEEN REPAIRED AFTER A LIGHTNING STRIKE AND NEW VALVES , AND SOME WIRING REPLACEMENT , WOULD BE GREAT IF I COULD THE PAIR BACK ON THE AIR , ANY SUGGESTIONS OR ANYTHING THAT MIGHT HELP ME TO GET THESE BACK ON AIR WOULD BE MRE THAN HELPFUL , THANKS , STEVE 2E0MDM?

This is great info, thanks!? I just tried to adjust it with the trimmer pot, and I could get it sorta close as long as the screw driver was on the pot, but as soon as I took it away, the marker tone changed significantly.? I can't get it close enough to be accurate, so I guess my next option is to try and find a replacement marker crystal and see where that gets me.? I'll do some research to see if any are still available.? I appreciate this a lot- definitely gets me much closer to having this problem resolved!

Best,
?? Scott

OK. Does your radio have the WWV receive crystal installed?
If yes, tune the receiver to it and zero beat the carrier while listening with headphones.?
Then off tune a bit so you hear a 400hz to 800hz “tone”. Don’t be confused by the modulated audio WWV also sends out. It stops occasionally so there is only a carrier.?

Now flip the marker on. ?
If close in frequency you’ll hear the difference in tone between the dead on carrier frequency of WWV and the 25KHz-100KHz crystal oscillator in your radio.?
On your regulator board (where the actual marker crystal and oscillator is located), there is TC1, a 50pF trimmer cap to adjust the marker frequency.?
If you can’t pull it in with that trimmer, you’ll need a board repair or a new marker crystal.?
Another way is to go to 160m band and see if you can use the preselector ?maxed out and tune in a local AM radio station around 1600khz to 1700khz and zero beat their carrier ... which is frequently well within 25Hz to 50Hz too.?

Plus, you have to adjust the 500KHz back dial of the VFO every time you switch from LSB, USB or CW... relative to zeroing your market generator.?

Your three local oscillator crystals, USB LSB CW.... ?could be off frequency too.?
