Re: X-Air Ultralight Aircraft Xair Hawk
Here are pics of the (2) right and (1) left sides. They are just as soft as they appear with no cracks. I guess the fabric came from different?rolls? The only install difference was left side had some heat gun work to de-wrinkle back when and has no effect now on either side. Thanks all for your comments, John

Whilst I wouldn't call myself an expert, I have had experience with the laminate used on some X-Air standard and F models, and hope I can?shed some light here.
It is often mistakenly identified as?Ultralam but this is incorrect, it?is actually a Dimension Polyant cloth called Profile 180. This is a basic laminate of Dacron and mylar film which has none of the UV resistant properties of Ultralam which was used on later model Thrusters.
Profile 180?has some good qualities - zero porosity, light weight, and a?range of colours among them.?Unfortunately most of its stretch resistance is due to the film part of the laminate. This?can get brittle and crack?with UV exposure,?time and crushing or creasing.?Stitch holes also?tend to act as starting points for separation (or delamination)?of the film.?
Once the film starts to crack, the strength of the fabric is reduced locally?and the cracking spreads. If the aircraft is flown with these cracks in the fabric?the airflow can easily peel away the film, de laminating the skins. The Dacron taffeta, without the film attached,?has very low strict resistance and allows air to easily flow through it.
For these reasons Wingtech does not offer or recommend Profile 180 for and ultralight aircraft skins. We?only offer?replacement skins made with?Dacron. It has the same range of colours, good porosity values and?a much longer service life. It?represents better value for our customers.?

From?Info I got from Dimension Polyant in Germany
when we first approved the Hawk in UK/Ireland, was that Profile LL 180g/m?
?primary use was windsurfers.
?
At the time all I was interested in was finding out what
its life span would be like and what actually was it made off as we kept being
referred to it as Mylar.
?
Profile LL is actually polyester (Dacron) you have?a
polyester cloth with a clear polyester based?mylar?film bonded to it,
hence the name.
?
It seems that it is fine on flat surfaces once you pull it
around corners you have the problems of cracking and de laminating.
?
Its a pity because when it is new it is really
nice.

we dont have any ultralam on our Hawks mainly?the
Mylar as the indians call it, which does delaminate and also prone to mildew due
to the damp conditions in Ireland

Re: X-Air Ultralight Aircraft Xair Hawk delaminating

Re: X-Air Ultralight Aircraft Xair Hawk
Thanks Alan and Michael! Mine seems (the Mylar) to still be soft and?pliable and not showing holes or cracks, perhaps because not being flown or any UV exposure. I was hoping some kind of fix would be available but looks as if?replacement is the answer. Strange however, is the fact it is only on the left and right side of the fuselage being considerably?worse on the right and none on the other parts of the A/C. Thanks again, John

Re: X-Air Ultralight Aircraft Xair Hawk
开云体育Hi Simon The fuselage has a flap behind the P2 seat as you will know. ?There are I understand that there are Hawks flying in France flying with BRS chutes. ?The thing to find out is are there any Hawks flying in Germany with chutes. There are two schools of thought about BRS, the first is that a good pilot does not need a BRS as training should provide the pilot to make a successful forced landing, rather like the Generals views of pilots and flying during the First World War. ?The second is that BRS is a step forward in safety and is now widely fitted and deployment has saved many lives. ?I think the odds on walking away unaided from a BRS forced landing are around the 99% mark were as a forced landing without a BRS the walk away figure is really slim. It must be noted that the C42, Skyranger and CT can carry BRS. ?Looks to me like the Hawk is behind in today's market!!! I am firmly of the opinion that the legislation 'industry' should really facilitate the fitting of BRS to all aircraft below the 600kg limit ASAP. Brian On 14 Nov 2015, at 20:13, simon@...
