Re: Standard Xair handbrake ?
I don't know of one as such but I built a X-Air standard and modified my brake drum system so that I could use a single lever, I'm a wheelchair pilot and I fly in the right seat and wanting to leave the standard toe brakes as they are so I drilled a second hole and fitted a double cable on each side so I have my single lever and the toe brakes are standard assembly, you could do the same but mount it to a hand brake lever so you have both systems.
the threaded ends and extra brake cable I purchased from a push bike shop just so you know :) I attached a picture of the hub I modified cheers Pete ?? |

There was a handbrake kit available at one time made in
uk, it was a UK requirement by the BMAA for versions that had a pull start
rather than electric start.
That is why it is detailed in the UK Section S mod
book??(available to download on my site )
?
It was a fairly?clumsy over centre lever screwed to
the floor that pulled two extras cables fitted to the brake levers, not many
were fitted.

Re: X-Air Ultralight Aircraft Standard Xair handbrake ?
Hello Huw, I noted in the UK Modification Book (Revised 08/03) that Optional Modification number 18 is a Parking Brake. In the description of the modification is this statement:? "If you are fitting an engine with a pull start then a parking brake kit may be purchased from Xair." I therefore wrote to the UK Agent, Wessex Light Aviation Co in August 2010 enquiring the availability of a Modification Kit.? This
is
the reply, "Unfortunately there are no modification kits for the
brakes you have asked about. You can do your own modifications and
submit them to the BMAA but this can be a long and difficult route to
take!!!
Sorry
I cannot help further
Best
regards¡± I didn't pursue this 'nice to have in case I go to a hard runway' idea further. Why write that a kit was available yet on enquiry, it wasn't?? It was most unprofessional of a company which must have been holding CAA Authorisations to be kit providers and UK Engineering Authority.? I was very disappointed and since that only e-mail exchange, I had nothing further to do with them, sourcing my parts instead from the European Agent in France. So
Huw, may I suggest having a read of Optional Modification 18 which
gives one a diagram of how the additional brake system works and proceed from there?? I don't remember now where I got the Modification Book as it didn't come with the aircraft when I bought it.? You could try asking here:? or Seamus' site in Ireland:? ? where you follow every X'air button until you come to a page with 4 columns of links then in the second column, select Downloads.? The UK Mod book is in column one there. I hope that helps a bit. John B

I fitted a rachet type handbrake between seats and was noted by the bmaa about that time. I may still have the drawings. It does take some engineering if you have the facilities

Re: X-Air Ultralight Aircraft BRS in X'air F
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHere are some photos that was sent to me yesterday, this is the
best of everything because it has a soft packed parachute
basically inside the wing and out of the airflow and the rocket is
away from the fuel tank area. This would be in my opinion the best
installation and again you are on the C of G point

Re: X-Air Ultralight Aircraft Re: BRS in X'air F
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI recall working on fitting the battery in the xair F tail and getting it load tested and approved in UK. It was the only way we could achieve the C of G when fitting a heavier Verner or Rotax 912. The down side was the length, diameter and weight of battery cables required to reduce the voltage drop on starting the current hungry Verner. Take note when doing C&G calculations. If you need to bring battery forward the I'm sure I still have some keel tube battery boxes in my roof space. ( saddle bag style) Steve Sent from Samsung tablet -------- Original message --------

? Yes, I can see advantages and disadvantages in both systems. The idea of detonating a rocket a few cm from a plastic fuel tank is something that doesn't appeal. I believe the theory is that the rocket exhaust is contained within the tube while it is within the airframe, however I can imagine if there is any vapour at all things will end badly. ? re C of G , they don't show where the chute goes, its probably packed in a fabric holder and it may well be mounted between the wings thus balancing the Cof G with the rocket. ? There is also quite a bit of scope for C of G adjustment as currently the battery is mounted in the tail as far back as it will go. If I needed to tip the C of G forward I can simply move the battery along the fuse tube or perhaps replace it with a lithium one. ? The rocket exhaust problem is not so easily solved. Perhaps some sort of fire blanket or at least a metal deflector. Perhaps the trisk is lower than it looks as there are many aircraft with similar installations and so far despite many deployments nobody has ignited a fuel tank. ? ? regards, ? Jon ? ? ? ? Thats only the rocket, not the complete chute.
It's pointing STRAIGHT at the fuel tanks ????? Something i dont
understand. The idea with the system we use is the distance from the fuel tanks
is more than 1 meter and no chance of an accident.? There are several ways
to mount the chute but the way we use puts it right on the cofg of the aircraft.
In the back like shown on your photo would need a lot of weight up
front. 'Jonathan Webb'

Thanks to everyone who has replied. Interestingly the system used in
Australia is quite different to that in Europe. After a bit of research I found
an image on the German X¡¯air agent? which shows their system? housed

I think that system is available from the factory in France so I am
currently making enquiries in that direction.
