CW decoder
Will we ever see a FW update that fixes the CW decoder problem? It catches my attention to see that there are US $ 100 transeivers that decode perfectly and in X5105 in various versions of FW it does not succeed. And I hope the X6100 doesn't kill the X5105 ...

Tx Beyond The Ham Bands Mod?
Is it possible to mod the unit to Tx outside the conventional ham bands? I'm currently applying for a licence to set up a 40 Mhz low power beacon and using the Xiegu would be handy.

Maybe dangerous situation (dangerous for the radio) with EFHW
2
Just blammo'd the CW on my G90 running it to a EFHW with 49:1 balun, 20ft of coax, no ground/counterpoise. I was testing the balun/wire set up & used the tuner to get the radio to a low SWR. (The wire/balun shows good SWR on 17m w/o the ATU; had the ATU on for 20m). Everything seemed just fine until I lost the dot paddle side of the keyer, then the entire keyer. Opened the box ('cause that's what hams do, right?) and found two of what I think are 100 Ohm resistors in the keying line (from the jack to the rest of the circuitry apparently open. Toasted. Like little holes in the top of the bits and measure open. (There are other similar looking bits on the same area of the board, all of 'em measure 100 Ohms, thus the contention.) So way I figure: I blammo'd the resistors with stray RF that was getting into/onto the circuit board via the keying line and nonsense (under 30ft) feedline with the antenna wire & balun less then six feet away. And yes, I already sent Radioddity an email for an RMA; we'll see how that works out. Being as the X5105 and the G90 are of the same breed, so to speak, I'm guessing that I better not try this with the one remaining functional Xiegu in the shack. Others may want to consider my lesson a warning to not be so goofy as this old duffer. Best part of all this was (a) thinking about tacking some 1/4W 100 resistors across the busted bits to check and (b) remembering that essential tremor was gonna make putting the screws back in the case just trying enough to test my blood pressure meds. YMMV &c. W8IJN

Birdies & spurs X5105
They say older folks don't need much sleep. So last night as I tossed and turned, I got out of bed and used the scanner function to chase down what I knew was gonna be a collection of birdies & spurs that I knew from the past two years experience were hiding in the radio. (Back when I was workin' at R.L. Drake and we had the TR7 in production, the game from engineering was if you could hear a birdie and it went dim with the radio connected to an antenna, we could ignore it. Ol' Steve Whitefield did a bunch of work eliminating the birdies & spurs that didn't go dim. So that's my benchmark: a 40 year old radio. ;-) ) So here's the list of what I found (and I went back and tuned through to verify that I was not hallucinating at 3 am) with no antenna connected. Some were monster easy to hear (the one at ~28.4 is particularly atrocious); others were just audible and might have gone dim with a decent antenna connected. YMMV &c.: 160m: 1875, 1888, 1970, 2000 75/80m: 3600, 3696, 3888, 3925 60m: 5375, 5395, 5443, 5500 40m: 7029, 7074, 7162, 7200, 7204 30m: 10059, 10096 20m: 14192, 14229, 14288 17m: 18095 15m: 21030, 21088, 21162 12m: 24896 10m: 28362, 28400, 28629, 28668, 28688 6m: 50000, 51087, 52000, 52129 Back two years when I first got this radio, I had noticed these points and got a bit aggrieved about it. OCD stuff, maybe. Anyway, I got over that and continued to use the radio -- and still do -- but some of these points are dead center to useful or commonly held QRP frequencies & places where the DX may hang out. So, when I finally fell into the arms of Morpheus, I wondered how much of this may still be evident in the next generation of the radio (of which many have spoken and for which many have already sprung). And, as I finally passed out & the sun began to rise, I had to admit that the X5105 is still a better radio than the Chinese uSDX boxes on eBay ;-) Nils / W8IJN

PC/Computer Control and Memory Programming for the X5105
14
I've been wanting to try the X5105 for FT8. And I would like a way to set up the X5105's frequency channel memories using a PC instead of using the rotary dial to slowly select each detail. Since Xiegu says its communication uses the Icom CAT CI-V protocol, I tried some of the software available. But I just started and don't have many details yet - I'm posting this now in hopes of other users also trying out programs and posting results. I'm using the CAT USB cable that came with the CE-19 adapter. And that was included with my "Outdoor Version" of the X5105, from Radioddity. (The 'outdoor' version is identified by the clear cover shield over the LCD screen. And I've read something that implied that the screen is one made for good visibility outdoors, in sunlight.) *** https://www.vk4adc.com/web/index.php/software-projects/55-vk4adc-utils/49-icommems The program "Icom Explorer" works with the X5105. It's not quite 'simple' to use, though. "Icom Memories Manager - v.1.-.14 (VK4ADC) [Mems.exe] also seems to work. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This might work - needs testing. https://arachnoid.com/IcomProgrammer/index.html and they have JRX: Virtual Ham Radio, which looks promising CHIRP works with IC-7000 *** PLEASE - Feel free to try any or all, and find more! Report your results and opinions here, in detail I know that PC control of a 'handheld portable' radio is sort of a contradiction, but what I'm more interested in is the memory programming. I do also think it would be fun to use the radio for portable FT8, but with Android rather than Windows. A whole different issue! -- Doug, K8RFT

Internal Battery voltage

My internal battery charges up to 12.3V then says it's full. Is this about what others notice also? Another question, how can I tell when my X5105 was manufactured from the serial number? Joel N6ALT

Multiband portable 'HT' antenna system - one left on eBay
4
I got a new antenna the other day. I haven't gotten out to use it yet, but it sure seems like a nice one. It's one that can mount directly onto the radio's BNC connector, for 'walkie-talkie' type operating. There's a telescoping whip and 6 individual band tuning/loading coils. You put the whip onto the band coil you want to use, and mount the assembly onto the radio's BNC connector. It's stormy outside here in S.W. Michigan, so I haven't tried the system out yet. I got it though eBay. At the time, there were only 2 available - now there's only one. The seller has a lot of different antennas, too. I think maybe he got these as some sort of close-out deal, because there was so few available. Or, maybe he did have a larger batch - I hadn't been looking until just recently. Here's a link to the last one - https://www.ebay.com/itm/133873990968 MFJ has single-band antennas that are "sort of" similar, but each has its own permanently attached whip, and they cost $50 each. -- Doug, K8RFT

Speaker

Does anyone have a problem with the sound of their speaker? I have issues hearing most stuff from it, it sounds cheap. Does anyone use an external speaker? Or has anyone done anything to improve the sound? De W4FDT

Nice, complete X5105 review, with much good information and tips

A nice article/review of the X5105, used for POTA/SOTA. Good descriptions of uses, troubles, cures and add-ons. https://qrper.com/2021/06/field-report-lets-build-a-super-simple-antenna-on-site-and-activate-this-park/comment-page-1/?unapproved=548149&moderation-hash=9a92aaae5006c4230029f68286d54331#comment-548149 There's also a second posting, about the X5105 ATU - https://g4usi.wordpress.com/2021/06/13/xiegu-atus-just-how-good-are-they/ -- Doug, K8RFT

Connect Systems
So one of you missed out on a swinging deal. I was about to sell my 5105 for a song. It was getting flakier and flakier. Original firmware from years ago. I hate windoz in any form but had bought a $100 machine just so I could update the beast. Lots of frustration even getting the damned thing to do anything at all much less be at all useful in zapping my rig. Called MFJ for help. Got nowhere except a promise to call me back which never happened. Called Radioddity and was informed by a most pleasant lady that they don't do firmware upgrades. Finally saw a post on here about Connect Systems. Voila! Called them up and talked to Jerry. Mailed the little dear off to him and within a week total it's back in my hand all happy and cured. Not only got rid of the weird science stuff but now I have about twice as many buttons to marvel over and brag about to my buddies. A big shout out for a great operation!!! https://www.connectsystems.com Mike K7ITL

Output power change during FT8 TX
6
Hi everybody. Can you please give me advice on the following. When I transmit a msg (let say i reply to a CQ) looking the x5105 power meter -- first 5 seconds power apparently stable -- from 5 to 10 seconds power go gradually to near zero (*) then gradually come back to normal pwr (**). (note *) not every time it goes to zero, some time it decrease only of some amount (note **) not every time it come back, some time it ends with zero At the same time I look at the SWR meter bar (at the right of the power meter bar) and it is stable near 1 - 1.1. I made lot of ft8 qso before this issue. My set up is the following -- FW last available on xiegu.eu [V 3.0.0 Nov 26 2019 16:18:50] [ X5105_App_V3.00_build008.xgf ] -- FLRIG 1.4.2 -- WSJT-X 2.4.0 To complete this strange history you should know that I started using Omnirig instead of flrig. I made some ft8 qso then suddenly the rig started "hanging" in TX during a msg. Radioddity support suggested some remediations, among them to use flrig, and I was very happy since with flrig magically I worked FT8 again... since this new problem... grrr grrr grrr... Thanks in advance. gio

CW Reader And High SWR Tuner Readings on a Magloop and Buddistick After Tuning
2
Could anyone advise of the correct Menu settings required for the CW reader to function correctly and actually read and decode Morse. I¡¯ve tuned into several CW transmissions with perfect Morse, only for the decoder to produce garbage on the screen. Also having high SWR readings after using a New Magloop Antenna and Buddistick Antenna after using the tuner. Noise levels are also very high. Can the it be reset. I¡¯m on version 3. I¡¯ve tried a ferrite coil on the feedline 6 turns, and thought that it maybe outside of the band. I don¡¯t have an analyser. any suggestions please. If I do a factory reset will it go back and remember the update to version 3 or will it end up as a brick. Thanks

Calibrating X5105 SWR Meter
4
Hi Group, This is the process for calibrating the SWR Meter as recommended by Radioddity using v3.0.0 firmware Recommended: 1. Disconnect the antenna 2. Turn PRE and ATT Off 3. Turn NB Off 4. Set RF-Gain = 50 I additionally, but not sure that it makes any difference Turn DSP-FLT Off Turn EQ Off Recommended: 5. Long press the Menu button to enter configuration menu 6. Select #11 RSSI Scale 7. Adjust until there is barely an indication for S1 (58 for me) I additionally: Adjusted one higher (59) 8. Save settings Joe K9SZ

Can I turn off full break in CW???
5
Just wondering if the radio has the ability to turn off the break in feature for CW. Just wanted to play with a new key or without transmitting on the air?
