Re: X5105 Battery rebuild

Hi group!
?
Just an update on the battery rebuild thread.... I just did another battery rebuild and it went together perfectly.? I know it is a data point of two but I am certain if you are careful you will have the same success I have had.

Menu #4 sub menu

I was just thumbing through the wonderful KE4RG version of the Operation Manual and noticed an important omission.
?
I'm speaking of V3.0 Rev. B which, I believe, is the most up to date one.
?
On both page 17 under Menu #4 and page 13 and page 3 (I think that's the only places this crops up), the functions accessed with a long push under Menu #4 got left out.
?
And that's where we set the keyer speed among other things!
?
Of course the submenu is there in the radio. Whew!
?
So when someone has a bit of time, it would probably be a big help to new owners to clear this up.
?
Thanks,
?

Re: Xiegu X5105 XCVR questions, auto memory keyer function not working and intermittent PTT

Hi JP,

Thanks for your response. Yes, I did the standoff tightening about a year ago. It did help the output power increase, but the intermittent output down to 0W continued. As the problem got worse with increased key down time with no power out, and continuing to hear the relay click on and off, it made me suspicious that it was software related and, Radioddity confirmed that. Apparently they have had a rash of these failures.

Lou,
? I had two of the 5105s that did that. The fix action is to disassemble the radio, BE CAREFUL of the side panel prop leg springs. They will fly out.?
? The radio has three or four boards and use brass standoffs to provide grounding to the boards. Over time, the screws and standoffs loosen and causes the very low milliwatts to zero output.?
? I took mine apart and cleaned the standoffs and ground plane they touch. Then using needle nose pliers to hold the stand-off, used a JIS screwdriver to tighten the screws. Never had any issues after that.?
? I bought and quickly returned the Xiegu 6200. Firmware issues and output problems…”only in certain serial numbers”, ya right!!
? The 5105 is a nice radio, quite portable and as you know, will tune just about any antenna.?

Re: Xiegu X5105 XCVR questions, auto memory keyer function not working and intermittent PTT

Hi X5105 Group,
This is a follow up post to my previous post (1/10/2023) on my X5105 that had intermittent transmit/PTT. After months of trial and error with no clear indication of a physical (Antenna, Power, Relay, Connectors, etc.) or settings cause, the rig eventually went to 100% of the time with no-output. Phone calls to MFJ and Radioddity were the same recommendation which was that it is a firmware issue requiring a re-flash. Radioddity strongly recommended that they could send the rig back to China for a full diagnostic check and repair.
?
An online search of this X5105 issue showed that I am only 1 of many having this issue. Most Hams cut their losses and sold the rigs. Those opting for re-flashing had mixed results; everything from a fixed radio with feature and setting changes to not working at all.
?
I then went down the road of researching an upgrade. The X6100 and X6200 are hot items right now. However, there are several YouTube videos showing that these rigs are not-yet ready for prime time with many software issues encountered and documented. Of special concern to me, there are a few specific mentions that “the X5105 no power output issue has been grandfathered to the X6100”….ouch!
?
So, I attended a Hamfest last week and put my originally purchased new 2020 X5105 ($499 from MFJ) on my table, mint condition, all accessories. I let it go for $200 and cut my losses.
?
I am a 45-year Electrical Engineer with a focus on analog and digital communications. At this point in my life, just engaging retirement, I am not looking to grow my work bench with projects, especially lethal-outcome flashing projects on SDRs that could render a brick. I want to maximize operating on the air, exclusively CW.
?
For what it is worth, I am not impressed, charmed, or fascinated with any SDR. This Xiegu was absolutely the worst-fear outcome I have been trying to avoid in this venture. Where an expensive radio simply stops transmitting due to a software bug is in my top 2% category for a worst case. Who would purchase a rig knowing they will be at the mercy of “code” for a catastrophic failure? Not me.
?
At this point, in the category of pursuing knowledge and experience in this Amateur Radio niche of SDRs, I would consider a rig for <$100. I have found a USDx QRP XCVR clone that is of interest. I may pursue this open-source code software rig for the $81.70 price + $3 shipping. I can cut my losses again for <$100, if necessary. But nothing more from Xiegu until they get their act together.
?
I would appreciate any input/feedback on this post with shared experiences and recommendations.

Subject: Xiegu X5105 XCVR questions, auto memory keyer function not working and intermittent PTT
?

I just found this group and have some questions about my X5105.

?

I got my unit via MFJ in late 2020 and have made 430 CW QSOs with it. It is a FW V3.0 unit. I have the following issues, to date.

Issues:

?

Auto memory Keyer: I have followed the below instructions exactly, numerous times and the internal keyer never transmits. I can, however, decode CW via the CWDEM mode nicely. Here are the instructions to load and send:

?

To configure the 10 CW memory messages:

  • Go to Menu 3 by pressing the MENU button until 3 appears beneath the power meter on the display.
  • Hit MSG
  • Select MSG number with VFO (Tuning Knob)
  • Press the EDIT button
  • Scroll through letters / numbers with the VFO and hit INS for each selection
  • When letter/number selections are complete,? press SAVE
  • Repeat for each custom message and when done, hit QUIT

?

To play the 10 CW preset messages:

  • Go to Menu 5 by pressing the MENU button until 5 appears beneath the power meter on the display.
  • Select DIGI
  • Select CWDEM from mode choices (leftmost button in menu 5) by pressing the button until CWDEM appears
  • Repeatedly hit MSG to select specific message number
  • Press PTT on body of rig or perhaps press PTT on mic. This will send the selected message one time.
  • To exit, hit MENU for other menu selections

?

In CW mode, the PTT function does not always trigger whether I use the:

  • PTT button on the radio.
  • PTT button on the mic.
  • External PTT input signal via the Accessory jack.
  • Whether I have the PTT software setting to Normal or Toggle.

I noticed that the intermittency it is associated with the battery charging function. These are the behaviors:

  • The PTT will always trigger properly if I have no DC Charger plugged into the External Power jack.
  • The PTT will intermittently trigger if a DC Charger is plugged in and the charge voltage is below 13VDC.
  • The PTT will trigger almost never if a DC Charger is plugged in and the charge voltage is above 13VDC.

With these symptoms/conditions, I am wondering if I have a ground differential issue?

I use a 12VDC car battery to power the transceiver and other accessories, a separate Li-Ion battery pack for the keyer, and a separate NiCAD battery pack for the external audio filter/amplifier. I could use a single supply for everything but the wiring changes in my shack are not easy.

?

Has anyone seen these anomalies and can offer any suggestions?

?

Re: Cw paddle plug

The paddle works on other radios and. keyer. I will check the wiring. Thanks

Hi John,

FYI, I operate only CW with my X5105 and have NEVER used extra long plugs for my key. It has always worked flawlessly, whether a SK or paddle was plugged in. Make sure the plug is wired correctly and the Key setting is set appropriately for MAN or AUTO. I've never had an issue with operating or switching between SK and Paddle.

Best regards, Lou N2JPR

I remember seeing photo ads with 1/8 inch stereo plugs that were extra long included with the 5105. I can get my straight key to work but not the paddles. Dots only work. I guess I need the extra long 1/8 stereo plugs. Does Radiooddity sell them?

Re: Where to get the absolute latest firmware of version 3?

Hello John,?
?
Where did you find the download link on the xiegu.eu website? I look out there and under support there's nothing. The main page there's nothing. Where is it at?? I'm trying to get the last version of firmware available.?

Re: Where to get the absolute latest firmware of version 3?

I went back and checked. I installed X5105_App_V3.00_build007.xgf
The other version was v3.00 beta06 build006. Was it necessary to do the beta version first? I just did ver 3 build 008. I think it came from xiegu.eu. It does not show up on radioddity

Where to get the absolute latest firmware of version 3?

I have heard of sub version variants of version 3 (6 or 8?) Is that’s true? What was the last version for the 5105 and was it from radioddity? I upgraded from 1.x something to 3 and lost the backlight. What is the last version ? It’s improved but I miss the backlight. Thanks

Re: Earphone Jack Not Working

Sounds like a physical issue with the jack or wiring to the jack. I have never opened one up but guess it may be a surface mount jack partially broken loose from the board. Maybe a little soldering could fix it. Good luck

Earphone Jack Not Working

Edited

I've not found anything on this issue in search.? I went through all the settings and changing a setting that looked like it might be relevant didn't fix this.

I put my earbuds in the earphone jack and nothing.? With the volume turned up all the way I can faintly hear the CW sidetone in the earbuds when I press the key.? But definitely no signals.

Has anyone experienced this and have a fix for it, or is it just a sign of old age.? My SN is X0300749 and it's at least 4 years old.

Thanks!
w2nc

EDIT: Same with a powered speaker hooked up.? It's not the earbuds as they work on another radio.??

DE19 Transmitting Blanks #data

I had my X5105 working with a DE19 previously. I switched over Digirig for a while because it is easier for field use. I switched back to the DE19 for use with the XPA125B, but now the transmissions are not registering on PSK reporter, i.e. it seems to be sending blank messages. Any ideas on wht could be wrong? TIA

X5105 XPA125B CE-19 connection diagram-FT8 #data

Is any one using an XPA125B and CE-19 to connect an X5105 to a PC for FT8? A connection diagram would be appreciated. TIA

Re: Transmitting FT8

Do you turn ON the Option LIN and LOU at the X5105.
Line-IN and Line-OUT must be set to ON to get the Signal out of the Radio.

Line IN must be OFF for using SSB-Phonie and CW.
