Nice X5105 review from RadioManual.info 2
There's a nice, detailed 3-page review of the X5105 at www.radiomanual.info search for Review: the Xiegu X5105 QRP Transceiver - RadioManual (I couldn't copy a good link to paste in here - sorry!) It comes as a PDF. Even recommends a Pelican case that fits. It's from 2018, though, and there have been improvements, mainly firmware, since. -- Doug, K8RFT

Serial numbers and dates 3
I ordered my X5105 from Radioddity about the second week of June, 2020. They had been on special a few days before that, but I missed it. And then they were out of stock when I did get my order placed! The radio arrived at my QTH on June 25, 2020, and must have been part of a new shipment. It did come with V3.0 firmware. On the back of the radio is a sticker with the serial number X0301546. I expect that someday there will be questions about model/unit variations over time and different production runs. So this may help in the future as a reference point. Doug, K8RFT

USB CIV interface temperature
Hi, I started using the included CI-V interface with the blue USB connector to connect my X5105 to my laptop. It works fine, I communicate via Omni-Rig with my logging program Log4OM. In Omni-Rig you choose IC-7000 because this CI-V protocol is used in the X5105. What strikes me is that the blue USB connection gets pretty warm 43.2° Celsius ( 110° F ). I have multiple USB CI-V interfaces for Icom devices and they don't get warm. Does anyone have experience with this, otherwise I have to report this as an issue to Radioddity. 73, Dick

The antenna analyzer in the X5105 is very convenient
The antenna analyzer in the X5105 is very convenient. Especially when you're using an antenna mounted directly on the radio, such as my GRA-1899 (or the extremely similar MFJ-1899). I checked the sweep widths of the analyzer today, on 20 and 4 meters. Here are the results. 40 Meters, with VFO set at 7.150 mHz: 7.043 - 7.257 mHz 0.214 mHz sweep width 6.615 - 7.685 mHz 1.070 mHz sweep width 6.080 - 8.220 mHz 2.400 mHz sweep width 20 Meters with VFO set at 14.200 mHz: 14.093 - 14.307 mHz 0.214 mHz sweep width 13.665 - 14.735 mHz 1.070 mHz sweep width 13.130 - 15.270 mHz 2.400 mHz sweep width When I enter the Analyzer mode, the sweep seems to start in "Continuous" mode, and pressing "MODE" once switches it to single sweep. Pressing PTT starts the next sweep. Changing sweep width didn't change the single/continuous mode. I found that I must exit Analyzer mode to change band, and the multifunction buttons don't change function when the band changes then, so it takes just a quick press of the SWR button to check the next band. I wonder if the "Band Scan" mode uses the same sweep widths - maybe someone else on here would like to test and report the results. [This is with an X5105 with version 3.0 firmware.] -- Doug, K8RFT

(So far) And at https://www.radioddity.com/blogs/all/xiegu-x5105-update-firmware-v3-0 I found this - Xiegu X5105 UPDATE | FIRMWARE V3.0 Update Info Posted by Jackson Chen July 29, 2019 Xiegu X5105 Firmware V3.0 1. Easier operation with new VOX function. 2. Fixes CW issue. 3. Properly optimized hardware greatly reduces the problem rate. [nope, not very informative!] (I had already downloaded V3 from Radioddity, and it's V3 Build 7). I have not updated my X5105, received in une, 2020. It's v3.0.0, according to the screen on the radio. +++++++++++++ https://radioaficion.com/news/x5105-firmware-update/ has X5105_FW_V1_0_06_build002_beta02.zip X5105_FW_V1_0_06_build002_beta02 Update Description 1. Fixed a bug in SPLT exception in CW mode of X5105_FW_V1_0_06_build001 2. Reconfigure the audio baseband unit to enhance the sense of hearing; Also available from radioaficion is X5105_FW_V1_0_03_build055.zip (12M) They also have v3.0, but list no description or build number. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ An eHam.net (https://www.eham.net/reviews/view-product?id=13557) review from 2019-10-26 says: "the early Version 3 firmware (V3.006) has a bug in CW. With this firmware you will get a hiccup in the CW note. Dits will come out d-dit; dahs will come out d-dah. You will not notice this if you listen on another receiver near the X5105. . . . The second hardware version of this radio looks just like the A-series but it usually has the V3 firmware installed. Reports from other users on the FB group hint that some of these radios will not have the CW bug. Others will have the bug. Xiegu recently released an updated Version 3 firmware (V3.007) that appears to cure the CW bug and provide the owners of both A and B series builds with the updated screen, a much more manageable menu system and CW, RTTY and PSK decode as well as VOX. The older firmware deep menu functions have all but disappeared. Some of those settings have been moved to the standard operating screen menu. This includes RF gain. . . . My experience with this new firmware is positive. However, there are some interesting "features" involved in this new firmware. . . . While the CW operation has been improved and debugged, the new firmware allows the keyer to act as a PTT if the radio is in SSB modes. If the radio is in CW mode, the PTT button on the microphone will produce a CW note. This means the PTT button can be used as a straight key. Interesting feature. . . . The new firmware appears to make the receiver a lot more quiet but there is still an obvious white noise hiss from the receiver when the radio is not connected to an antenna. This annoyance is somewhat controlable by the RF gain setting on the front menu. (There is a deep menu function to adjust the S-meter gain to match or coincide with the RF gain control.) . . . The DSP AF filter and noise reduction filter appears to be improved. It's hard to make side-by-side comparisons when you only have one radio." --------------------- I hope all this helps those of us who are curious about the firmware variations, bugs and fixes. I'm sure there's more out there to find,

MMSSTV 8
I'm struggling with getting MMSTV to transmit to the x5105. I've tried all the supplied setups within the MMSTV software for rig control but none seem to work with the 5105. I can receive audio from the x5105 and decode images, but no transmit. I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions to help get me up and running.

Just an FYI for everyone, If you go to this group's webpage the menu on the left side towards the end of the menu is a photos directory. You can go there to see all the photos submitted to this group in emails. The image I just emailed of the radio connection pin outs is there. Also separate "albums" can be created there for generally uploading images. -- Brian K0FBS

Making an audio cable for data modes with a Sabrent USB Soundcard 4
What follows is a lengthy backstory. If you just want to see the answers drop down 3 paragraphs. ?Yesterday I ventured into the great unknown of making an audio cable to interface between my sound card and the CE 19 device for use with data modes (FT8 & JS8CALL). I thought this would be a straight forward action. However, I began to question the correct wiring mostly because of the terminology used between the devices. On the CE-19 the AF in and out are marked on the device for the 3.5mm plug. Is that AF in and out from the radio or the soundcard? Then does the data in and data out on the soundcard plug the same as from the CE-19? Finally, with the supplied 3.5mm cables from the manufacturer which wires go to which part of the 3.5mm plug (a red, black & white wire)? Using a multimeter I could figure out the cable question. How it works The supplied audio cable from Xeigu has the following configuration: Base = Black wire Ring = Red wire Tip = White wire This means for making a soundcard cable, the white wire is AF out, Red wire is AF In, and the Black wire is the ground. After trial and error I determined that the Sabrent data out port (green) is the same as the AF Out on the CE-19. AF In is the data in, the pink port. The Sabrent has two 3.5mm female plugs, but the supplied audio cable from Xeigu has only one ground wire, so to make a cable requires a little extra wiring before you solder the wires to the male plugs. First take some spare wire and make two lengths of about 2.5-3 inches (Depending on how much you need for your 3.5mm plug case. Then join the two wires you made to the black wire. Now you have a ground wire for two plugs from the single black wire. (You will have to cut away some of the out cable cover to give you a longer set of wires to work with.) For the Data Out plug solder the black/Grd wire to the base of the plug. Next solder the white wire the tip of the plug. For the Data In plug solder the black/Grd wire to the base of the plug. Then solder the red wire to the ring on the plug. Verify all your connections with the multimeter, then screw on your plug covers and apply any shrink tube. (Remember to insert your shrink tube and plug covers over the wires before you start connecting wires to the 3.5mm plugs.). Plug your Data Out plug into the green port, your Data In plug into the pink port. Plug the green end of the supplied audio cable into the AF IN & Out port on the CE-19. Plug the DIN cable into the CE-19 and then into your radio. Now you are ready to do your favorite data mode on the X5105. (After plugging in the Sabrent to your computer/Raspberry Pi USB port.) I got into FT8 after making my cable last night and had a contact with a Wisconsin station from here in Colorado. According to the meter on the 5105 I was only putting out 3.5 watts. My antenna was a homemade dipole I made the day before strung from the ceiling in my shack as best I could hang it, which was very poor. I couldn’t go outside and try it because it was snowing hard, with 15-20 mph winds and the temp was 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Attached are a few pictures to aid in understanding. X5105 Tuning Dial/Knob 3
When I tune around on any band, often when I reverse the turning direction, there is a 'click' or two of 'backlash' - no change in frequency with the first click, sometimes not even with the second click. Has anyone else noticed that problem? I'm wondering if it's normal or if my radio has a defect. It has been that way since I received the rig about 5 months ago. Thanks for any feedback! -- Doug, K8RFT

Panadapter - RTL-SDR dongle 8
I recently tried my new RTL-SDR Nano 3 "dongle" connected to the I.F. output of my X5105. It worked out nicely, and I could see at least 1 mHz of bandwidth. I was looking at the AM Broadcast Band and could see carrier spiked on just about every 10 kHz channel. And I could hear the audio too, slightly delayed compared to the sound from the radio's speaker. The Nano 3 came in a "kit" from Nooelec, and I got it from Amazon for about $35. The kit includes a short cable with SMA connectors and an MCX adapter for the dongle. I had to buy another MCX adapter for the radio end. It also comes with adapter cabling for connecting to a phone and to a charging system at the same time (there's a USB "Y" adapter too). The little sdr dongle is hardly larger than a postage stamp. But it does get very warm - it comes with a small, stick-on heat sink! I haven't found enough other band activity yet to get a good idea of what it might do for ham band operation, though -- Doug, K8RFT

X5105 vs G90 3
Hi all, I recently got the G90, and am disappointed with lack of NR and notch filter. I understand that the X5105 has both? is that right, and do they work well? I am a CW only operator. 73, Karen AG4CC

CTCSS tone
I'm trying to connect to a 6m repeater that requires a tone of 100Hz. In the manual its shows a CTCSS option under the 'System menu'. However the latest firmware 3.0 that came on my device does not have these options anymore. Is there another way to turn on a PL tone? Regards Andy - KG7MXF
