Re: Speaker
Indoors, in the shack, I use one of an old pair of computer speakers.? It came with the right cable and connector, so it just plugs right in and works.? Sounds better than the tiny one in the radio, too.? (Check thrift stores in your area!)
You can also plug headphones into the speaker jack, even earbuds.? If they have a mic, though, that will NOT work. -- Doug, K8RFT |
Connect Systems
So one of you missed out on a swinging deal. I was about to sell my 5105 for a song. It was getting flakier and flakier. Original firmware from years ago. I hate windoz in any form but had bought a $100 machine just so I could update the beast. Lots of frustration even getting the damned thing to do anything at all much less be at all useful in zapping my rig. Called MFJ for help. Got nowhere except a promise to call me back which never happened. Called Radioddity and was informed by a most pleasant lady that they don't do firmware upgrades. Finally saw a post on here about Connect Systems. Voila!
Called them up and talked to Jerry. Mailed the little dear off to him and within a week total it's back in my hand all happy and cured. Not only got rid of the weird science stuff but now I have about twice as many buttons to marvel over and brag about to my buddies. A big shout out for a great operation!!! ? Mike K7ITL |
Re: Output power change during FT8 TX
Data from link.... ? Hamstick Dipole Is A Practical and Portable Limited-Space HF Antenna ? 2001-2002 , Virginia RACES, Inc. - For Educational Use Only Steve Cuccio, NB30, NM, Old Dominion Emergency Net And Ed Harris, KE4SKY, VA RACES, State Training Officer ? Ed uses four 5-ft. mast sections for ease of vehicle transport and storage. He recommends that whips be equipped with quick-disconnects, color-coded by band and stored with a 4' ground rod in capped 3" diameter PVC pipe. RACES may need to set up in a paved area such as an EOC parking lot. To do so, bolt a folding 3-ft. TV roof tripod onto a triangular support frame constructed of three 5' pieces of 1" angle iron, using 1/4-20x3" bolts and wing nuts. Similarly attach a length of 2x6" across the open end opposite the TV tripod. Park a front tire of your vehicle on the board or place sandbags across it to provide wind stability. All stash easily in an SUV. With practice, you can erect the antenna in 5 minutes! Without a balun, the coax feedline may actually contribute a greater effect to the antenna tuning and imbalance, especially if the feedline length approaches a quarter wavelength (or odd multiples) on the band of operation. This may also result in a "hot chassis" effect at the rig which would be noticed by distorted audio (RF getting into the mic preamp). To minimize this effect, coil the feedline with at least a half-dozen turns of 1 foot diameter to reduce the RF current (common mode RF choke). If possible, 4 to 5 Fair-rite #2643102002 cores placed over the coax near the bracket would serve better (approx 15 microhenries or 350 ohms impedance on 75 meters). These cores are part of my "Go-Kit" and are also used over the DC power cords to minimize RFI noise pickup from external sources (generators, computers, etc). A variation provides dual HF band coverage with a single coaxial feedline. Two hamstick dipole mounts were bolted together with their center-isolated posts connected together using #12 gauge wire. Two sets of whips for 40 and 75 meters were assembled. Coax was attached to one of the mounts. There is minor interaction between the whips, although the #12 gauge wire looks slightly capacitive. Connecting the coax to the lower band dipole mount reduces the effect of the #12 gauge wire. - Stuart VE3SMF |
Re: Output power change during FT8 TX
Good joke!
I found a downloaded PDF about using hamsticks as portable dipoles.? Part of the article may be of help for our USB interference problem? I tried to copy and paste the text here, but this time I cannot copy the text from this PDF. The URL for the article is http://www.w4ava.org/races/HamstickDipoleFactSheetRev5Sept023.pdf ???? and the google search result is -> Basically, it says that if the feedline is 1/4 wavelength long, or a multiple of 1/4 wave, it is more likely to have 'common mode' current trouble, or at least that the problem will be worse than a different (non-resonant) length of feed line.? If you can add a few feet to your feedline, maybe by adding a short 'jumper' cable, it would be worth trying.? Or try a different feedline with a different length. -- Doug, K8RFT |

Tnx Doug for your answer.
I'm not sure it consoles me to know that those problem may happen also with IC... Yes, Radioddity (very kind and patient support!!!) mentioned a lot of things mainly about cabling: in short they suggested to use a good CAT cable, a good optoisolated interface, a real serial interface not the emulated USB/COM interface (btew I'm currently using all the stuff that came with the x5105 package, including CE-19, in addition I have a mini usb audio input/output dedicated to x5105). Among that they said: "we use flrig, not omnirig". So I give it a try (question of minutes vs days or weeks to buy new cables and interfaces) and with my surprise those problems were solved... ...until I realized I have new problems. I suppose, yes, the problem is a return of RF on the forest of cable between the rtx an the laptop. Also maybe a "cold join" of some component that change with the heating of the radio... or a defect in the fw... The current problem is intermittent, in between I enjoy some ft8 qso... 73 de IU1MRD, gio. If I'm allowed to say a joke: x5105 its like a full optional car -- let say a Porsche or a Ferrari -- with the right flasher burn out, the passenger door blocked etc... nevertheless running!!! |
Re: Output power change during FT8 TX
Did Radioddity mention the possibility of "common mode current' on the co-ax?? I have had troubles with my IC-706 with FT8 on some HF bands but not on others.? When I click "send" the radio buzzes 0 the T/R relay switches on and off very rapidly.? This seems to be affected by the weather, and is worse after a rain.? I'm suspecting there might be water in the co-ax cable, but I have not yet come up with a good test for that.? And it happened with two different antennas, each with its own separate co-ax feed line.? Adding ferrite toroid cores did seem to make some difference, but did not cure the problem.? The buzzing/switching problem occurs on the higher frequency bands, 15 up to 6 meters.? Lately, just on 15 meters.? My HF activity is on a GAP Challenger antenna, except for the 160 meter wire loop.? 6 meters has a separate dipole, hanging vertically from a tree.? And 6 meters seemed to have the problem the worst.

Output power change during FT8 TX

Hi everybody.
Can you please give me advice on the following. When I transmit a msg (let say i reply to a CQ) looking the x5105 power meter -- first 5 seconds power apparently stable -- from 5 to 10 seconds power go gradually to near zero (*) then gradually come back to normal pwr (**). (note *) not every time it goes to zero, some time it decrease only of some amount (note **) not every time it come back, some time it ends with zero At the same time I look at the SWR meter bar (at the right of the power meter bar) and it is stable near 1 - 1.1. I made lot of ft8 qso before this issue. My set up is the following -- FW last available on xiegu.eu [V 3.0.0?? Nov 26 2019 16:18:50] [ X5105_App_V3.00_build008.xgf ] -- FLRIG 1.4.2 -- WSJT-X 2.4.0 To complete this strange history you should know that I started using Omnirig instead of flrig. I made some ft8 qso then suddenly the rig started "hanging" in TX during a msg. Radioddity support suggested some remediations, among them to use flrig, and I was very happy since with flrig magically I worked FT8 again... since this new problem... grrr grrr grrr...? Thanks in advance. gio |
Re: Adapter for IF out
Here's my 'Mini' or Micro' SDR and MCX adapter for X5105 I.F. output.
It's part of a whole little "kit" from NooElec, about $35 from Amazon, but the MCX to SMA adapter was a separate purchase.? It came in a pack of 2, also from Amazon (currently $5.50 for two). This version of the kit came with cables and adapters to use it with a cell phone, with an extra cable for also connecting a phone charger at the same time.? The SDR uses the battery pretty quickly (and gets hot). -- Doug, K8RFT |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThanks Doug.? I thought I did search
before posting, but not with the right parameters I guess.? I'll
take a look at the posts.
