You've got to run at a VERY slow pace to get 89 mpg. I'd be surprised if that bike has even sniffed 6000 before you got it. I think it needs some serious thrashing. It's clearly as tight as a duck's

They always graunch into first from cold. I just hold the front brake and push it through. The whine is simply the bevel. It's just snug. In the manual there is a note about adjustment and it talks

Also, Nige, I forget what oil weight you are using, if it's 20W-50 go to 10W-40. I assume your clutch lever is adjusted OK. If these suggestions don't work, see if you can get to ride with and swap
