Bl**dy typical I spend ages looking for a minter and get one that is
virtually spotless, with a full service history, that has obviously
been well cared for by the owner, not thrashed and it is a
***problem*** bike. I have decided that if I can't get it sorted by
the end of the summer then I am going to get rid of it and look for
something else....I am so p*ssed of right now. The bikes are not going
well, we have just got some work, which means my dream of going to Uni
is over....Arrgghh

Also, Nige, I forget what oil weight you are using, if it's 20W-50 go
to 10W-40. I assume your clutch lever is adjusted OK.
If these suggestions don't work, see if you can get to ride with and
swap with another W owner. There are more of you closer together
over there.
Perhaps you have a typical W650, but it doesn't sound like it, it
unfortunately sounds like you may have a problem bike, and if you get
to compare with another you'll know.

The clunky gear changes may be because you still have a little too
much oil. I find that with too much oil in my W (ie. *just* below
the
max. line), my gear changes get pretty chunky because the clutch
drags
a bit. Bring the oil level down to exactly between the upper and
lower
lines and your shifting may improve (worked for me).
