Re: :WAS goodwood breakfast club NOW MBS STRIKES AGAIN
Laura: The best of all those 250's was the Honda NX
250 from '88,'89 and very cool with it's mini fairing. Here's a pic of my NX
650, they looked alike.?Used they're reasonably priced. Daniel

Hm if I would be interested in such a yamaha xt225 (or 250) what would be I
be looking at moneywise? I understand it would be good for town/commuting. I
do fancy one of those, riding position seems comfortable. But you know I go
through phases so please don't take it that I will go and buy one tomorrow,
I'm likely to change my mind again as women do!! Haven't even sat one. Are
they easy to get hold of?

There are loads on the Continent...if you can dal with left hand drive...Even the venerable old XT 500's are still kicking around for sensible money...Now there's a great road bike...apart from the shit 6v lights and drum brake front end...

OK. So that's a 2-stroke noisy bike then. Quite like the idea. Are they cheap could I have them as second bike? KTMs look cool, definitely too high. A friend just had to have his food reshaped as he came off doing a wheelie at 70 (we think). Laura

I've sort of been interested in them as they look comfy (riding position),
well the ones I saw but don't know what they were. But they are mostly high aren't they. Thanks for that long explanation really helpful.

Other off-road sports are:
Motocross where the bikes are tuned for power and like trials, have no
lights and are not road legal. MX bikes actually handle really well
but
are stupidly tall to give them masses of suspension travel...expect seat heights in excess of 960mm. Proper Supermotos are basically Motocross bikes with
road front wheels on.
Enduro...Where the bikes are very similar to motocross but are more softly tuned with gear ratios more suitable to road use, and have lighting sets. These bikes are usually road legal in the UK and make literally stunning
commuters. In all seriousness, you would have to try very hard
indeed
to
find a better bike than a late model Honda XR250 for general urban duties. They weigh...brace yourself...230 lbs....under half your Harley...and
30
bhp in a bike that light makes for serious performance. My old Yamaha 465
with 42 bhp would shut down any musclebike under the sun up to 60 mph. A
lot

Roads...i.e.
'Rights of way open to all traffic' which were not tarmac. In other words, forgotten about or not used. Because they were roads, bikes still
had
to
be fully road legal and obey national speed limits. They are often just muddy tracks across moors and rivers and to be honest, full-on Enduro bikes
are not designed for such tricky and challenging narrow paths....But
being
macho men we used 'em anyway!
Trail. These bikes are less extreme and less robust. They have less suspension travel, less power and are often more civilised. You used
to
find some in every makers range but today in the UK, only grey imports
are
found. They were popular amongst older trail riders ( the ones who knew
what
they were doing). James has mentioned the Yam Serow, the Kawasaki Sherpa
and
so on, but older bikes like the XT250 were very good and frankly, the XR250
Honda is so good and usable it'll cross into both camps.
All off-road bikes are brilliant fun, combining punchy motors with incredibly light weight. Both motocross and Enduro bikes have to
have
superb handling stability because they are built to win races on bumpy
rough
ground and as a consequence, round town or the lanes, a motocross or enduro bike with road oriented tyres on usually blows 'proper' road bikes into
the
weeds.
They are incredibly comfy too...really soft seats and amazingly good suspension make for a real armchair riding position.
Very high credibility too......
Jon

Trials? Is that motocross? exciting. I like the idea of riding in the woods, think it's called greenlaning. Liked riding on the grass at the rally next weekend. Laura, here's some trials riding:

Re: :WAS goodwood breakfast club NOW MBS STRIKES AGAIN
?
Serows are around ?1000 to ?2000. All are used,
some more heavily than others. Honda XR's have been around since the early
'80's but ironically the early drum braked models are gaining value because
they are 'classics'. From around '1990 on they were disc brake at the front.
From year 2000 or so certain ones were electric start. A mate used to ride one
'on the road' and he reckoned it would cruise at 70-80 mph, and get around 80
mpg at less hectic speeds. They are also stunningly reliable and really well
made. Seat heights are not that low, at 930 mm...but they sag at least 100mm
when correctly adjusted for your weight which makes it easy to get?feet
down. Because they weigh under 95 kilos it doesn't matter if you lean them a
bit at stops!
?
Leccy start XR250's are around ?2000 for a clean
gently used one.
?
The Serows and Sherpas were designed as utility
farmers bikes, specifically for sheep herding and so on. That's why you don't
find 'em in the UK...our farms are too small! They often have fixed racks for
carrying bales or other farmy stuff. They make superb trail bikes but are
pretty gutless for road work unless you are spending most time in
cities!
?
Their gentle power delivery makes them great
bikes for chuffing up sheep tracks on Exmoor where tearing along is out of the
question...In some ways they are like trials bikes with comfy seats
?

What lovely sounding thumpers.
I can see myself disqualified in the first 20 feet for putting my face down.

Hm if I would be interested in such a yamaha xt225 (or 250) what would be I be looking at moneywise? I understand it would be good for town/commuting. I do fancy one of those, riding position seems comfortable. But you know I go through phases so please don't take it that I will go and buy one tomorrow, I'm likely to change my mind again as women do!! Haven't even sat one. Are they easy to get hold of?

Thanks for that long explanation really helpful.

have
superb handling stability because they are built to win races on bumpy

Re: Couple of newbie questions.
My first W never did the W-wobble thing, got pretty nasty when the seals began to stick on the front brake, but the wobble thing just never occurred. I had it to an indicated 115 MPH..a few times, only instability I ever felt was during high speed winds. I never rode without hands though, I have had other bikes do the tank slapper thing, and I don't push it. W # II, did an obvious ocillation, not a true tank slapper, but scary. The steering head is a little loose, and that may be the cause of the instability. I haven't tightened down, just keep things mostly under 100 MPH, although I did do more than that in the VA mountains without any shaking. James Franklin 2411 Pine Summit DR. You have to pick your speeds...I usually end up sitting on a glove, trying to sort out some issue with a flapping strap or whatever, and watching the bars like a hawk as I wait for the shimmy to start!
My front Avon solved the problem initially but it came back eventually. It's just a thing they do...like the old Commando's used to....
Jon, that sounds exactly like my shimmy. It is only noticeable when you take your hands off the bars and goes away when you put them back on. If however you continue with the 'no hands' style of riding, it gets a lot worse. I've just had an avon roadrider put on the back wheel and have now arranged for the matching front to be fitted next, so we'll see how we get on with 2 new tyres. I know there is usually no need to ride no hands, but there are times when you have to use just one and I would like to have the confidence that the bike won't throw a wobbly.
Thanks,
Pete
--- In W650riders@..., "Jonhaddock@..." <jonhaddock@...> wrote:
The shimmy is common to many bikes and is cured by a small amount of
friction. The best place to find it is in the front tyre contact patch...The
stock front wears badly and the contact patch almost shrinks to nothing. A
decent single compound ( i.e. not a stock Accolade) tyre transforms the bike
and pretty much sorts the shimmy. I used an Avon Venom .
You should only notice the shimmy if you take your hands off and just a
light touch restores equilibrium.
If it still persists enough to annoy, buy a steering damper...That shimmy is
what they are built for!
Jon
Hello everyone, just got my W650 a few weeks ago and a couple of issues
have arisen. probably been dealt with before but who knows.
Handlebar Shake: when throttling back from 50+ or so mph, the handlebars give a wobble/shake at between 45-50mph, ok if you've got
both hand on the handlebars, but if for some reason you don't, there is
a noticeable shimmy until the speed drops to 40-45mph. Thought it mught
have been down to a worn (very) rear tyre, but a new one has made no
difference.
Momentary cough: sometimes, the engine gives a 'cough'. It alwaqys recovers instantly and then won't happen again for the rest of the ride.
Any suggestions for these issues, or are they all like it?
Thanks
Pete

File - Homepage Photo Contest.txt
Wriders - We now have a themed monthly photo contest, the themes being holidays appropriate to the month or season. Winner's pic would be used as the YAHOO group homepage picture for that month (or maybe just that holiday). Contest is open to all.
Here's the rules: There will be a new folder under the Temp Photos photo section (Not the Main homepage!) called _Photo Contest_ into which contest submissions will be placed.
The list of holidays for the year will be sent out at the beginning of each month.
You, the contestants, will peruse the list of holidays, and select the one(s) you want to try to capture the spirit of. The aim of the game is to have a bike in the pic, obviously the Dub is preferred but if you take an outstanding pic that matches the theme and has some other bike it will be considered. Please, pix must be ORIGINAL, and if copyrighted, permission must be granted by you for the moderators to use it. Also, you must name the pic in such a way that I'll know which holiday you're trying to represent. Last, bear in mind that smaller is better -- 600x400 or thereabouts is a good resolution.
During the month, I will look for pictures that seem to fit the coming month's holiday theme, and by the end of the month I will have selected one. I will then notify the moderators who will insert it in the homepage, to be the first thing anyone sees when they log on.
The current list of holidays is as follows:
January Celebration of New Year -- Australia Day February Valentine's Day -- President's Day (US) March St Patrick's Day -- Commonwealth Day (UK) April April Fools -- Tax day (US) May Labour day/May day (UK and other Europe)-- Mother's day (US) June Father's day -- Queen's Birthday (UK/AUS/NZ) -- Midsummer's day July Canada Day -- US independence day -- Bastille Day (France) August Int'l left-hander's day, Int'l youth day -- National Day (Switzerland) September Labor Day (US/Canada) -- Father's Day (Australia) October Columbus Day (US) -- Labour Day (Australia/New Zealand) -- Thanksgiving Day (Canada)-- Halloween November Thanksgiving Day (US) -- Guy Fawkes (UK) -- Veteran's and Rememberance (various) December Winter holiday season
If I've missed one, or left out a national holiday for any of our members, please let me know, and they'll be added to the choices - I want the options to be international in scope!

W650RIDERS GROUP TIPS & PROCEDURES
Revised 10/12/03
SUBJECT LINE:
Stay in topic! The Subject Line should be a clue what you are talking about. If in a reply you are changing the subject consider; (a) starting a new thread. This means DON'T reply to this thread, start a NEW one. (b) adding a prefix to the existing subject, then the word "Was" to the original subject. As in... (original) RE: Selling my low bar kit (change to) Wussed out. Was RE: Selling my low bar kit
Note: the "Re:" that prefixes a subject is added by Yahoo when a new subject (thread) is replied to. Please do not start a new thread with "Re:", it's confusing.
SUBJECT CODES:
To help those who do not want to wade through subjects NOT related to W650s, please start your subject line with "NWC" (for No W Content). As in...
NWC: Joris' trip to Mars...
REPLYING TO POSTS:
When replying to posts, judicious cropping of Yahoo generated advertisements and lengthy threads will be appreciated by all. There is no need to have every previous reply contained in your reply. However, leaving the most recent reply or pertinent parts of it will create some continuity in the thread, especially for those that read the posts with email.
ATTACHING PHOTOS OR FILES: Note that Yahoo Groups no longer saves attachments to messages viewed at the Yahoo Group site. Only "Individual Email" subscribers will see an attached photo or file.
Please be sensitive to other member's time spent downloading and reading the posts. Most people do not have a high-speed connection. Some members access is charged per minute or by size of download. If you need to attach a photo, please keep it small. Use Windows Paint, your digital camera picture editor or download a picture editor/viewer such as IrfanView to re-size your photo before you send it. 300kb photos take a while to download at 56k. Re-sized to about 64kb will probably get your point across. If you have multiple photo's, consider uploading them to the group Photo Sections (see below).
Alternatives to attaching photos: (a) upload them to the group Photo sections (see below re: W650RIDERS' PHOTOS). (b) get a free Yahoo Photos account. You get 5mb of storage at no charge. Set the access to "Everyone" in "Edit Settings". Then if you want to show a photo, just paste the URL of your Yahoo Photos page in your message. To get a Yahoo Photo's account, go to... (c) if you have a web page of your own, you can link to your photo on that page.
W650RIDERS' PHOTOS: Now (2) Photo Sections available; The "permanent" Photo Section of W650Riders and the new "temporary" Photo Section of W650Riders-Photos
W650RIDERS Photo Section; permanent storage (as long as there is room). Please limit these pictures to W650 specific items. We have a voluntary limit of 3 photos per member, to give those who want to show them space to do so.
W650RIDERS-PHOTOS Photo Section; temporary storage. This is a supplementary and separate Yahoo Group to W650Riders. Go ahead and upload as many as you want, W650 and general motorcycle interest (artsy shots, ride photos, that new Guzzi, your cat sitting on the bike, etc.) These photos will be deleted by the moderators in 30 days (or more), so the space will never fill up. You may want to upload pictures here that you would normally "attach" to message posts, because; Only subscribers with "individual email delivery" see an attachment. No one will grouse at you for attaching a 500kb (huge) picture that takes a long time to download. Upload as many as you want. Not everyone wants to see all the attached photos. Give them a choice.
Note that a couple of short cut links are now printing at the bottom of message posts; they will open your browser and take you directly to W650Riders-Photos Uploader and List Mode Viewing.
PHOTO SECTIONS IN GENERAL Yahoo stores your photo 2 ways; a maximum 400 pixel "shared" version that any member can view, and your original uploaded version that only you, the owner, can view (this is a Yahoo thing, they want you to order prints from this larger photo). The shared photo is probably sized at 100kb or less. The original version is whatever resolution and file size you happened to upload, which can be 10 times the size of the shared version. Please delete this larger version as it takes up a lot of space (no need to do this at the temporary Photo Section of W650Riders-Photos). The moderators will periodically review the photo section and remove any larger versions. Note that uploading a large version only wastes bandwidth and increases the time it takes you to make the upload. Don't send a 1.3 megabyte photo as it will never be seen in that resolution anyway. Downsize it first and your uploads will go faster.
3 WAYS TO READ THE MESSAGES:
(a) Individual Emails: This can be the quickest way to read posts. The messages are delivered to your inbox one at a time. This is the best option if you want to keep up on the latest posts immediately. Email attachments will be sent directly to you. Note that if you use Individual Emails you won't be looking at Yahoo packaged advertisement screens every 4th message as on the Group Site Message Section. If you haven't checked your mail in a while, there may be a flood of it. You may want to chose another method of reading the messages, if you prefer, or if you will not be checking the email for a while (like out of town).
(b) Daily Digest: Messages are delivered in batches of 25 or daily, whichever comes sooner. This is the best option if you want to receive fewer individual email messages and don't need up-to-the minute posts in your inbox. Email attachments (pictures, etc.) are not available in digests.
(c) No Email: With this option, you can only read messages at the Yahoo Groups web site. Use this option if you don't want any email while you are on vacation, or just flat don't want any emails. Email attachments (pictures, etc.) are not available in with this option.
There are advantages and disadvantages to each method. Choose the one that fits your needs. Regardless of which method you chose, you can post messages at the Group web site, or with your email program.
One other tip if you elect "Individual Emails"; the quantity of emails may seem overwhelming, but most email programs allow you to filter the incoming mail into separate mailboxes. You may set up one especially for W650riders, that way the Group messages won't be mixed in with your personal or business email. From there you may sort the messages, if you like, usually by "from", "subject", "date received" and others. There are instructions for doing this in the W650Riders Files Section.
TO CHANGE YOUR PREFERENCES, from the Group home page... (or any of your Yahoo Groups)
Select "My Groups" at the upper right of the page. From there you can select "Email Preferences" to change the way you recieve posts.
YAHOO GENERATED SPAM;
It's a good idea to periodically check your Yahoo account to see if they have your permission to contact you through email, ground address and phone, and give your contact information to 3rd parties. When you sign up with Yahoo, the default is in Yahoo's favor.
To fix this, from any Groups home page, select "Account Info" at the upper right. Part way down your account information screen, pick "Edit Your Marketing Preferences". Then look at all the "Include Me" options and set them they way YOU want them. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen and watch for "fine print" options too. Then be sure to hit the "Save Changes" button.
SPAM:
Will get you immediately banned.
SELLING STUFF:
We welcome members who have a need to give away, trade or sell W650 related parts, accessories, manuals, etc. This is not to say a retail or wholesale business can set up shop here. W650 owners seem to be the sort that like to modify their bikes and try new things, which often results in extra stuff lying around your garage. If you think another member might appreciate the use of it, go ahead and post it. Please work out the details of your deals off line.
note; This file is sent monthly to the members of Yahoo Groups W650riders. If you have questions, suggestions or concerns, please contact Dennis Guggemos, co-moderator.

Re: Exhausts & retro noise
Looks like Mikes XS might have a set like the Posh. I don't know what they sound like or baffeling...but it could save some coins and would get to you a lot quicker. --- In W650riders@..., Ruari McLennan <r.mclennan@...> wrote: Thanks, but I found 'em. I like the 50s/60s teardrop or Triumph/BSA

I have been a W owner for 5 years now, And ready to move on to diff. toy. I'm not sure how much to ask for my bike. It is a 2000 with 3k miles, blue and silver, no modifications, almost new condition. I live in Minnesota (twin cities area).

I've done so much custom work on my W650 that I need to look at a stock one to see if I've made any mistakes when I resassembled the bike. Just want to come by and take a peek if you're within a 100 miles or so of New York City. (Long Island, NJ or CT). David Best to reach me at: davseidman@...
