My first W never did the W-wobble thing, got pretty nasty when the seals began to stick on the front brake, but the wobble thing just never occurred. I had it to an indicated 115 MPH..a few times, only instability I ever felt was during high speed winds. I never rode without hands though, I have had other bikes do the tank slapper thing, and I don't push it.
W # II, did an obvious ocillation, not a true tank slapper, but scary. The steering head is a little loose, and that may be the cause of the instability. I haven't tightened down, just keep things mostly under 100 MPH, although I did do more than that in the VA mountains without any shaking.

You have to pick your speeds...I usually end up sitting on a glove, trying
to sort out some issue with a flapping strap or whatever, and watching the
bars like a hawk as I wait for the shimmy to start!
My front Avon solved the problem initially but it came back eventually. It's
just a thing they do...like the old Commando's used to....
Jon, that sounds exactly like my shimmy. It is only noticeable when
you take your hands off the bars and goes away when you put them back
on. If however you continue with the 'no hands' style of riding, it
gets a lot worse. I've just had an avon roadrider put on the back
wheel and have now arranged for the matching front to be fitted next,
so we'll see how we get on with 2 new tyres. I know there is usually
no need to ride no hands, but there are times when you have to use
just one and I would like to have the confidence that the bike won't
throw a wobbly.
Thanks,
Pete

The shimmy is common to many bikes and is cured by a small amount
of
friction. The best place to find it is in the front tyre contact
patch...The
stock front wears badly and the contact patch almost shrinks to
nothing. A
decent single compound ( i.e. not a stock Accolade) tyre transforms
the bike
and pretty much sorts the shimmy. I used an Avon Venom .
You should only notice the shimmy if you take your hands off and
just a
light touch restores equilibrium.
If it still persists enough to annoy, buy a steering damper...That
shimmy is
what they are built for!

Hello everyone, just got my W650 a few weeks ago and a couple of
issues
have arisen. probably been dealt with before but who knows.
Handlebar Shake: when throttling back from 50+ or so mph, the
handlebars give a wobble/shake at between 45-50mph, ok if you've
got
both hand on the handlebars, but if for some reason you don't,
there is
a noticeable shimmy until the speed drops to 40-45mph. Thought it
mught
have been down to a worn (very) rear tyre, but a new one has made
no
difference.
Momentary cough: sometimes, the engine gives a 'cough'. It alwaqys
recovers instantly and then won't happen again for the rest of
the ride.
Any suggestions for these issues, or are they all like it?
Thanks
Pete
