Serows are around ?1000 to ?2000. All are used,
some more heavily than others. Honda XR's have been around since the early
'80's but ironically the early drum braked models are gaining value because
they are 'classics'. From around '1990 on they were disc brake at the front.
From year 2000 or so certain ones were electric start. A mate used to ride one
'on the road' and he reckoned it would cruise at 70-80 mph, and get around 80
mpg at less hectic speeds. They are also stunningly reliable and really well
made. Seat heights are not that low, at 930 mm...but they sag at least 100mm
when correctly adjusted for your weight which makes it easy to get?feet
down. Because they weigh under 95 kilos it doesn't matter if you lean them a
bit at stops!
?
Leccy start XR250's are around ?2000 for a clean
gently used one.
?
The Serows and Sherpas were designed as utility
farmers bikes, specifically for sheep herding and so on. That's why you don't
find 'em in the UK...our farms are too small! They often have fixed racks for
carrying bales or other farmy stuff. They make superb trail bikes but are
pretty gutless for road work unless you are spending most time in
cities!
?
Their gentle power delivery makes them great
bikes for chuffing up sheep tracks on Exmoor where tearing along is out of the
question...In some ways they are like trials bikes with comfy seats

Hm if I would be interested in such a yamaha xt225 (or 250)
what would be I be looking at moneywise? I understand it would be good for
town/commuting. I do fancy one of those, riding position seems comfortable.
But you know I go through phases so please don't take it that I will go and
buy one tomorrow, I'm likely to change my mind again as women do!! Haven't
even sat one. Are they easy to get hold of?
Laura,
Honda CRs are two strokes and they are high performance racable..the XRs
and the XLs are 4 strokes.
The Suzuki DR 200, the Yamaha XT 225
(Serrow), and the Kawasaki Sherpa 250 are all electric start 4 strokes
with seat heights at 30 inches or less unladen.
