Suggestions to make a 4-jaw chuck?
Hi, Have you made a 4-jaw chuck for the Unimat? Are there plans that you would consider? I would like to make such chuck. So far, Harold Hall' s plan at http://www.homews.co.uk/page211a.html seem to be the most doable one. Gingery's seems a bit fragile when scaled down to be Unimat 's size. -j

Report on an inexpensive vise
Hi friends, You may have seen a vise like this in Amazon. Here is my experience. Size (1.2¡Á1.5¡Á3.9) is ok, except for the interference with the wheel. Vise came with bolts and t-nuts that are way too small for the unimat. Holes in the vise, both plain and threaded, will benefit from 10-32 bolts (or M5¡Á0.8? I don't have one to test). If you have options, choose the vise with the right bolts.

refurbishing a Unimat?
25
Hi. I'm new to this forum. I just bought a Unimat, I think it needs a tune-up. The machine and accessories have been used a lot and shows signs of wear. Before I start, though, I'd like to hear about your experiences. First, I'm not a machinist (yet) - I've been studying and fumbling with my woodwoking equipment to do some simple things. But I decided to get (a little) more serious and learn on real equipment - that's why I got the Unimat. I do know basic benchwork (measurements, layouts, hand tools.) Next, the machine came with no operating manual. I'll be getting one shortly - as soon as I'm sure which machine I have. On the nameplate it just says "Unimat" (no model number). The motor has a model number U-90. My best guess is that it's an SL or DB200. Do you know how I can tell? Then, do you know if the operating manual includes maintenance details (specs, tolerances, adjustments, etc.)? Or should I look elsewhere for this? Any ideas on basic books or sources for the novice Unimat owner? Lastly, if you've refurbished a Unimat, what was your experience? What would you do differently next time? What worked well for you? Thanks for reading my lengthy plea for help, and in advance for any advice you may offer. Joel

Saw a Unimat in the wild - used for model shipbuilding
5
After the comment that the group seemed to have gotten quiet, decided to pass this along. I was recently at the Maritime Museum in Oxnard, CA and they had a display of about a dozen ships made by one craftsman, Edward Marple, including his workbench. It has the ship he was building when he passed away. Notice the Unimat pointed at with my not very subtle arrow. It has the jointer attachment. The motorized contraption at the front right of the desk is an old dental drill. He assembled with planks and wood dowels like the real thing. They said up to 8.000 wood dowels in one of his models. Closer photos of the Unimat: And just a few of his many ship models they had on display. Charles E. "Chuck" Kinzer

Chuck coming unscrewed
4
I want to leave the work piece mounted in the chuck then mount the chuck on the milling table/ rotary table to do some milling on the work before returning it to the lathe. Unfortunately the work will unscrew due to the rotation direction/force of the cutter. Has anyone come up with a solution for this. I want to leave the work mounted in the chuck. Any suggestions would be appreciated Dave Borneo

Very Quiet on Unimat Group

Not much interest on the Unimat Users group I have noticed. Soft Face Hammers and Replacement Face Pads + Other Machinist' Parts/Tools
4
Hello to all, I was looking on the web for replacement pads for my vintage Craftsman 6oz soft face mallet/hammer, and found a supplier KBC Tool. I also found out the Craftsman hammer was/is made by Vaughan Tool, model SF6. There is also a 12 ounce hammer SF12. They have the parts dirt cheap!. $2.36 each for the 1" diameter pads for the SF6.. These are typically hard to find at a good price. They also offer a mini-soft face hammer P/N 1-397-655 (7-1/4" long) w/6 different face pads included. for $5.77. Other machinist' tools and parts also seem to be at some of the best prices on the web. kbctools.com Just an FYI for everyone. Not affiliated with them. Regards, Jim SL1000 owner

Unimat SL1000 for sale
6
Folks, I have a SL1000 that picked up recently. I thought I would have the time and drive to play with it, but I found out that I don't. The machine has a bunch of accessories, including the milling head and more. I was going to take some pictures to share, but it is raining outside and my patio table gets the most useful light for pictures. If anyone is interested let me know. I hate these generic ads, yet I am posting one myself. My apologies. As soon as the rain lets out, I am going to take detailed pictures and provide some descriptions. Price wise, I don't know. I grossly overpaid as it was from the estate of someone I knew and the sale benefitted the widow. I will accept a reasonable offer, although I have no illusion that I will recover my cost. He used it to make pens and other stuff like that, but while he was sick, the lathe went unused for a few years. It will need some cleaning and lubing to bring it up to daily use. When it comes to packing, I will take it to FedEx. They will sell me the necessary box or boxes and they will pack the machine professionally. This way if it gets damaged in transit, there is insurance to fall back on. Whatever they charge for this service plus the cost of fedex ground shipping from zip code 22015 is going to be the shipping fee, in addition to the lathe price. I am adding a small pic to show the model designation. Let me know if anyone is interested. Andrei Get Outlook for Android

Spindle Bearing Lubrication
8
Hello Gary, Raddish is absolutely correct. Purchase some Grade 1 High Speed Bearing Grease. I would first try your local automotive store and look for the smallest amount they sell. If you don't find it there try a bearing store if you have one relatively close. The little can shown in the MMT says 'esso' Nebula EP 1. This grease may still be available but it will have a new name. To re grease/re pack your spindle bearings you will have to disassemble your spindle. Do you have a copy of one of the versions of Miniature Machining Techniques(MMT)? Either the 1963 edition will do. It has a cutaway views of the spindle assembly. Oddly the 1971 Edition does not. Take your time, don't force anything and pay close attention to how everything came apart so you can reverse the procedure on re assembly. One little 'gotcha' is how the Belville washers go back in the sleve. They go in with their IDs touching. Be careful not to lose any of the tiny balls out of the races. Bearing manufacturers will tell you not to wash any part of a ball bearing with a solvent but instead push the new grease through the bearing taking the old grease out the other side. I would work on a old cookie sheet with four sides with a rag in the bottom to help keep a dropped balls from escaping and going lost. I wash the old grease away with kerosene twice then follow up with a rinse in acetone or alcohol and dry absolutely before re packing. This will be a hand and finger job and will be messy so have plenty of paper towels handy to wipe up the mess on your hands and else where when you are done. If you have never done anything like this before take heart as there is a first time for everything. If there is anything you don't understand please ask questions early in the process to avoid prat falls. I hope this is enough to get you on your way but if you need more we are here to help. Best, Cary Stewart

Drilling... Thrilling
3
Second post from me in two days... This one relates to my next jobs on that cleaned up aluminium offcut but is also quite pertinent to the 'learning the basics' question. My Uni spends a lot of time in drilling mode and does a pretty decent job of it for someone who can't find space for a dedicated pillar drill but I am often left feeling that there is room for improvement with my technique with holes slightly off target or deep holes diverging from the vertical by more than I would like. So... excluding modifications to the original machine, how to do drilling better on the DB or SL? Specific variations and questions... When to clamp and when to slide the vice/job around to move between holes? Holding sheet material too big for a vice or table How to hit the mark accurately (or why do I often miss?) Centre punch or edge find and use the dials? Centre drill or not? (I now use a 3mm 90 degree spotting drill which is easier to eyeball onto marks) Do all ops on one hole before moving to the next or do all holes with one tool before changing tools? Tool changes and limited quill travel (a consideration that the drilling section of 'Miniature Machining Techniques' seems to ignore) There may be better reading material available - most of what I have is about lathe work. Regards, Andy

Does anyone have any ideas about how/where to mount the pickup of an el cheapo Chinese digital tachometer on a Uni SL? Locating the magnet is not a problem. Thanks, Bill

Milling Depth Indicator
3
Hi gang, Inspired by the discussion on here a little while back I finally got around to having another go at mounting an indicator on my milling column. My column is home made so I had no qualms about drilling and tapping the end M5 (on a bigger lathe). On top of this I attach a piece of 5/16 bar also drilled and tapped with a length of M5 studding in between. The block is from 1/2 in square steel with M4 Allen screws for clamping. Finally the horizontal bar is from 3/8 steel with the ends turned down and one end threaded M6 to attach through the bracket on the back of the indicator body I took it for a test drive cleaning up a sawn aluminium offcut for further use. After a few niggles with loose bits it worked really well... better than I had expected. I ended up with a 10mm cutter taking 3 thou cuts. Unusually for a milling job I actually enjoyed it. Photos attached... I hope Regards, Andy

iGaging Digital 6¡± Digital with remote
6
I just purchased an igaging 6¡± digital read out with remote display. I am going to mount this on my Unimat DB200 to measure linear travel. If this works well I will also mount another readout to measure cross travel. If anyone has implemented something similar I would appreciate hearing about your experience and any advice. Do DC permanent magnet motors get old and weak?
10
Not specifically a Unimat question, but some people here seem to know a heck of a lot about brushed, DC motors. Do these permanent magnets get tired after a while? I scavenged one from a lawnmower labeled 24VDC/500 W/4300 rpm. When I hook it up directly to the 24V battery pack it only gets up to maybe 300 rpm. I replaced the brushes and made sure the bearings spun nicely and the battery is fully charged. Am I missing something, or is it junk? Tim in Vermont
