Receiving very few stations on screen
5
Hello...wa2nan, Kerry here. Running uiview32 and receiving a lot of digi's but very few home stations on the screen. I do see several in the incoming and outgoing bar at the bottom but not going to the screen. Using WIDE2-2 setting.. Using rf not online. See a lot of stations on the incoming bar at the bottom but they are not making it to the monitor screen..

Ui-view receiving lots of duplexers but few stations?
2
This question (I think) despite the message being all statements, makes no sense. What do duplexers have to do with any of this??? What does "receiving a lot of digital" mean? All packet data (APRS transmissions) are digital. What does "Very few home stations on the screen" mean? How are your receiving? Off the air, or from the Internet? What radio / TNC / antenna are you using? etc. And finally "WIDE2-2 setting' -- this has absolutely no effect on what you RECEIVE . It only determines how your TRANSMISSIONS will be handled by other stations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H. Another 60M APRS Road Test Tomorrow
[Friday 15 Dec 2023 15:15 local (US Eastern time / 2000 UTC ] Tomorrow (Saturday 16 Dec 2023) I will be conducting another 60 meters road test of APRS over classic AX.25 HF packet *vs* APRS over the VARA high-performance HF modem. This is another trip from Lansing, MI to Traverse City, MI - about 200 miles/360 km each way. I will be beaconing alternately as WA8LMF-2 on classic packet APRS, and as WA8LMF-1 on VARA. Radio setup is the usual - Yaesu FT-891 running into an MFJ 60-meter hamstick mobile antenna on 60M "Channel 5" 5.403.5 MHz USB. Peak power output will be about 50 watts in both modes. Receive/igatre setup at home is another FT-891 and a mini-dipole made of two 60M mobile hamsticks mounted horizontally about 12 feet / 2.9 meters above the ground to maximize NVIS receive. I expect to depart around 09:30 local (US Eastern time) / 14:30 UTC. The drive takes about 4 1/2 hours so the trip up will be entirely during daylight optimum NVIS propagation hours. The return trip will start in the late afternoon, during the period of twilight-to-long-range-nighttime propagation. Depart / return times subject to change! Hopefully, my presence will show on my own 60M UIview UI-Webserver maps. Go to <http://WA8LMF.net/map> for the links to the various UIview mapping web servers on 60M. NOTE: I am not using the "FLdigi modes" MFSK16 & PSK31 on this test. If I do get received at home, the posits will be igated to the APRS Internet System (APRS-IS) and viewable on APRS.fi. <http://APRS.fi/WA8LMF> (No SSID) Standard 2M packet APRS on 144.390 MHz. APRS Igates Over VARA Mode Now Operating on 30 & 60 Meters
[This is the workable successor to G4HYG's PSK63/MFSK16-based "APRS Messenger" for weak-signal HF APRS!] *The world's first Tri-Mode APRS igates are now "open for business" 24/7 on both 30 and 60 meters.... * The WA8LMF UI-Webservers now receive and igate APRS over classic 300-baud AX.25HF packet, APRS over MFSK16 & PSK31, and *now APRS over VARA* on both 30 meters and 60 meters from my home station located in central Michigan. VARA is one of the newest sound-card "digi-modes". Written by Jose Ros EA5HVK, It can receive and decode error-free data transmissions at signal levels and S/Ns that literally can not be heard in the radio speaker. With stronger signals, it can exceed the net data rate of VHF/FM 1200-baud packet in a 500 Hz CW bandwidth on HF ! VARA is adaptive, adjusting it's transmit speed up and down based on error rate and S/N., switching from simple to more complex multi-tone QPSK wave forms, based on error rate and the bandwidth of the radio. In a 2300 Hz SSB bandwidth, it can exceed the throughput of 9600-baud VHF/UHF packet on HF! It is already starting to replace the pricey (USD $600) SCS Pactor4 modems on Winlink HF radio email systems, purely in software with a standard soundcard interface. The basic version, usable on the low data rates of APRS, is free. A USD $70 registration unlocks the higher-speed modes. Currently, the other widely-used activity, layered on top of the VARA "softmodem" is "VarAC Chat", a live keyboard-to-keyboard chat application that can also do file transfers and "igate" received beacons to the PSK Reporter network. Running on top of VARA, it can equal the weak-signal performance of FT-8, but with free-form conversations instead of the hello--sig report--goodbye canned exchanges of FT-8. VARA presents a KISS-over-IP interface to external programs. In principle, any application that can run over classic packet TNCs (messaging systems, BBS systems, APRS, etc) can run over a VARA link instead, with an ENORMOUS increase (15-20 dB advantage) in weak-signal capabilities. I have been testing APRS-over-VARA for over a year now. Some of my findings early this year are summarized on my web site at: <http://WA8LMF.net/APRS_VARA/index.htm> This was a competitive "shoot out" between classic 300-baud HF packet and VARA on 60 meters, on a 500-mile road trip. At least three APRS client applications (PinPoint, APRSis-32 and YAAC) can link directly to a KISS-over-IP interface. For older APRS clients, like *UIview*, that can only do KISS over a serial port, the third-party "Swiss-Army-Knife" of com port utilities "VSPE" can quickly and easily create an IP<-->Serial-Com-Port bridge. Full details on setting up VARA for use with APRS applications is here on my web site: <http://WA8LMF.net/VARAforAPRS> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H. APRS Server Question
5
I've been running UI-View32 for several years now and across a couple different computers. I'm fairly happy with it. I've noticed something though. Years ago, when I would connect to the APRS Server I would instantly receive tons of stations popping up from all over the world and messages would flood in. Now when I connect, I get nothing. What happened? Is it me or did something change that I missed. Thanks all! -- Rusty WB4BSD

Updated UIview Virtual Machine Package Now On My Website
For some years now, I have had a ready-to-run UIview setup packaged as a VMware virtual machine on my website, for download. This bundle included UIview, installed and ready to run, with all it's plug-ins including Precision Mapping 9.0, along with an installer for the freeware VMware Player required to run the VM. I have just updated the bundle with extensive revisions to the install notes and a much more recent version of the VMware Player. I have tested and verified that the VM now runs on Windows 11, as well as Win XP, 7, 8.x and 10. I now have the VM and VMware running successfully under "Windows Tiny 11" on my el-cheapo USD $129 Walmart Lenovo 14" laptop with only 4 GB RAM. ("Tiny 11" is an unofficial distribution of Windows 11 that results in an installed footprint less than 1/3rd (!) that of the normal Win11 -- 7 GB compared to 22 GB+ for standard 11. This is achieved by stripping out a lot of the MS bloat including smart-phone-app wanna-be MS Store app cruft, games, hooks for popup advertising & user tracking, and the sprawling invasive Edge browser. It will run on a lot of hardware that Microsoft claims can't run Win 11, including those lacking the "trusted computing platform" module and oceans of RAM.) The freeware VMware Player application is also available for MacOS and Linux, though not included in my bundle. This means UIview can be run on Macs and Linux devices, including potentially the higher-powered versions of the Raspberry Pi. Go to my website for more info and the download link for the 5.4 GB ZIP file at: <http://WA8LMF.net/UIview_VM> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H. Commands
4
Howdy; I am looking for the commands that are added in the server setup that limit what you see and what you don't want to see. Had all that on my other machine but it died a power supply death. Like I don't want to see all the flow stations. Items like that. I used to have a paper with all that bit I think it got lose with the accidental file wiping from a program I didn't understand. Appreciate any suggestions! 73 Mike - N7ZEF

No stations via RF
2
Hi All, I have a new setup of UI-View32 and am using it with my TM-D710A in TNC mode (using a custom .CMD file for it). I have not set up any Internet stuff, strictly RF. In the terminal I am seeing traffic like so: VE1HCA>APNU19,VE1ARC*,WIDE3-2:!4456.83NS06355.91W#PHG5498/W3 Willow Hill, NS MARCAN UIDIGI <NSARA> VE1HCA>APNU19,VE1AEH*,WIDE3-2:!4456.83NS06355.91W#PHG5498/W3 Willow Hill, NS MARCAN UIDIGI <NSARA> VE0RDM-9>T5PR4T,VE1AEH*,WIDE3-2:`\;Zlq,k/'"5[}|)<&#(#|!wb{!|3 VE0RDM-9>T5PR4T,VE1SDR,VE1ARC*,WIDE3-1:`\;Zlq,k/'"5[}|)<&#(#|!wb{!|3 VE1TPL>APNU19,VE1ARC*,WIDE3-2:!4532.57NS06405.62W#PHG5450/W3 Lynn Mtn,NS MARCAN UDIGI TPARC VE1TPL>APNU19,VE1AEH*,WIDE3-2:!4532.57NS06405.62W#PHG5450/W3 Lynn Mtn,NS MARCAN UDIGI TPARC VE1CA-9>T5PY6V,VE1XK,WIDE1,VE1VZ,WIDE2*:`ZTip 5>/`"5u}Rob, Mobile, Scanning_% But none of it shows up on my map (of course I'm talking about stations in my local area that would even be on my map) and the station list window is completely empty as is every other type of list. I've gone through the settings and don't see where I've gone wrong. 73, Doug VE1LG

UI-View keeps quitting?
3
My UI-View keeps quitting! It stops updating incoming packets and sits with no terminal updates and no beacons being sent. When I try the Control C and enter a command, it seems frozen. I then go to set-up and restart the communications to the modem by reloading the startup parameters, and it starts to spew saved incoming packets, updating the map, filling the terminal with all the halted packets . Almost like Flow Control stopped it, and an X-on seemed to restart things. However, me inputing X-on had no effect. I've tried different TNCs, Paccomm Handipacket, TNC-2, PTC-2, and AEA PK232 and they all do the same. I 'feel' it's a parameter that's set wrong, but never found it. It usually runs for several hours before quitting. Any ideas? TNX es 73 - Mike VE3EQP .....>

VARA-MFSK16-OFDM Shootout for 60 Meters APRS This Saturday
5
This test will have FOUR copies of UIview running at the same time on my Panasonic CF-51 mobile laptop. This is a 32-bit dual-core 1.6 GHz CPU with 4 gigs (maximum for a 32-bit system) RAM. 3 copies will be beaconing APRS posits on the new VARA HF modem, MFSK16 and OFDM -- the latter two generated by two copies of FLdigi. (All three digi-mode programs present a KISS-type interface that can be used by UIview, instead of a conventional AX.25 packet TNC.) After the dramatic results of the 300 baud AX.25 vs VARA test I made in early January, I am now ready to go with a 3-way comparison test of the new VARA modem -vs- MFSK-16 generated by FLdigi -vs- OFDM generated by FLdigi. This 3-way shootout will happen enroute from the Lansing, Michigan area to Traverse City, Mi for the annual Cherryland ARC Swap-N-Shop. I will be departing about 3AM EST Saturday 11 Feb to arrive about 7:00 AM. After the hamfest, the return trip will begin around 1-2 PM, depending on what kind of gathering may develop after the hamfest. The tests will be on 60 Meters "Channel 5" at 5.403.5 USB. Full details on the test are on my website at: <http://WA8LMF.net/APRS_VARA_MFSK/index.htm> A summary of the previous VARA vs AX.25 test in early January is here on my website: <http://WA8LMF.net\APRS_VARA> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H. hard drive failure reinstall help
12
Good morning all, So our club had a UI-View setup with weather station, internet feed and digi enabled at the local EOC. Due to some building issues the EOC was shut down with intentions of it being moved. After a lengthy time, over two years, no location has been decided on fir the EOC. The club has moved to a new location and wants to set up the aprs/wx system again. And I know you see this coming, the hard drive in the old pc has died after all this time sitting. The original system used PMap9 so I went to WA8LMF’s page for the ISO download but the link no longer works. I have searched for another source to do the one time work around mentioned for use with UI-View but no luck. Does anyone out there know of a source for PMap9? Thanks ahead for any help. Jeff kb5nmb

server flter
14
Good morning everyone. Need some help with my home APRS setup. I'am running UI-View and want to limit my feed from the online server to 50km from my location. After much reading on the internet I have tried using logon filter commands to do this. What I have tried is filter r/34/-88/50, filter m/50 and a combination of both filter r/34/-88/50 m/50. I have placed these in the text to send on connection and or the extra text to send on connection boxes in the aprs server setup. No matter what I have tried I still get the full feed. I'm logging on to the NOAM server to test this. So what am I doing wrong. Thanks ahead for the help. Jeff kb5nmb
