UI-View Settings - wide wide trace 3-3
You should use the path settings recommended by the Digi operators near you. Where populations are less dense you likely can use more complex path settings.

Where populations are dense, most digi operators would say to beacon less often, and use shorter paths. You may find clues to what is working by setting your station for receive only and watching what others use and which paths work for them. As a group we should use paths that are only as long as needed and beacon as seldom as necessary to let others know your location. We use a shared resource. Don't use more than your fair share. Should we be using standard settings for APRS - I have tried variations settings using wide and trace 3-3 etc etc and not sure what settings we should be using to gain best use. |

You call that easy! It will take me weeks trying to understand all of that. Too many choices and do I need all the choices?? Thank you for your help, I think.

I don't know if you are wanting your hand held or what other reason you are
being intentionally vague, but if you try and then hit a wall, more people would be able to help. Come to a stopping point and then describe what it is you are actually having trouble with. Simply saying "It doesn't work! " doesn't give anyone anything to go on! Have a nice day and good luck ? UI-View was frozen in time upon the death of the programs author. He decided that after his death the program would not be further refined. Fortunately a number of devoted users have found ways for the dedicated UI-View operators to continue the use of the program with windows. The supporting operators have patched us through the multiple up dates to Microsoft operating systems and so we still get to enjoy the UI-View functions. But UI-View is not a plug and play microsoft program. To use it you must study your own computer, your operating system and how they work with UI-View. If you are not interested in that requirement, perhaps you should move to a newer APRS program and find the plug and play APRS program that might better suit you. Ui-View normally puts an icon on the desk top, so use that, failing that the mysteriously named uiview32.exe is the program to run.

Ui-View is normally very easy to install, the only proviso is NOT to locate it under Program Files, something like C:\uiview will do. You will have to slightly modify the .ini file to keep up with modern settings but that is explained in many places on the web. 73 Jeff G8HUL -----Original Message-----

Hi,

This might help: The Latitude and Longitude are in the format dd.mm.nn<C>. "dd" is two digits for degrees. "mm" is two digits for minutes. "nn" is two digits for decimal minutes. NOTE - decimal minutes, not seconds i.e. 30 seconds is .50 as there are 60 seconds in a minute. "<C>" is either "N" for North, "S" for South, "W" for West or "E" for East. --Stan Y. Uiview is simple to activate,of course its not "technological" as some software but it depends what are your needs. i have been using for decade and still is doing a good job for me 73 gervais ve2ckn ________________________________ De : [email protected] <[email protected]> de la part de Mike Hemel <kb7wuk@...> Envoy¨¦ : 26 avril 2021 23:44 ? : [email protected] <[email protected]> Objet : Re: [UI-View] UI-View Settings - wide wide trace 3-3 Eldon, UI-View was frozen in time upon the death of the programs author. Should we be using standardAre you trying to decide what path to use for your outgoing beacons, or are you trying to set up a digipeater? Looking around at other stations around you, they seem to have adopted the "new paradigm" adopted by much of the rest of the world some years ago... e.g. WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 would be an acceptable two hop path for a mobile station. Fixed stations (and almost nothing that flies... probably not a problem there!) should not use WIDE1-1. WIDE2-1 would be a one hop path. WIDE2-2 would be a two hop path. I would recommend the shortest path that would make you visible a reasonable distance around your location. If there are any "high" WIDEn-N digis, a one hop path would make you visible for some distance. A fixed station with a tall antenna could operate with no path. If it needed help from a digi, a one-hop WIDE2-1 could be used. A two hop path (if really needed) would be WIDE2-2. Here, many mobile stations do just fine with a single hop of WIDE1-1. A station out in the boonies (country) might need a few more hops to reach an iGate... e.g. WIDE1-1,WIDE3-3. I wouldn't recommend this where there is dense APRS use though. If you are trying to set up a digpeater, close UI-View and edit the file uiview32.ini. Look for the [DIGI_OPTIONS] section. Change UIFLOOD to the two letter abbreviation used there. Is it UK? Change UITRACE from TRACE to WIDE. Change WIDEN-N to TRUE. Change TRACEN-N to TRUE. Enter your call sign in SUBST_ALIAS. The paths of WIDE, RELAY and TRACE are obsolete. We are now using WIDE1-1 and WIDEn-N. The UIFLOOD setting will allow people to use WIDE1-1,UK7-7 for emergency messages. It would be a total of 8 hops. The WIDE1-1 would make the insertion point traceable. The UK7-7 would be up to another 7 hops. It would be considered an abusive path to use this all of the time. In times of emergency, it would give users a way of spreading a message or bulletin as far as they could. Let me know if any of my suggestions aren't suitable for operation in the UK, but the above seems to match what others around you (and much of the world) are using. -- 73 Keith VE7GDH "I may be lost, but I know exactly where I am!" -- 73 Keith VE7GDH "I may be lost, but I know exactly where I am!" |
