Re: deck work
I dont seem to have that problem on my boat yet although some deck joints are starting to show some spongyness.? I hate to suggest it but it sounds like you are ready to do the whole foredeck of your T27.? If you repair what you have you will have to epoxy the deck closed (with how much water behind it?) before repairing it.? I would suggest a haul out if you are not already out of the water and then proceed with fixing the problem which might include a complete above deck or foredeck re-core.?
Please post a picture or two when you can.? I am interested in this kind of reapir work when it comes my way which it probably will considering my hull is nearly 40 years old.? What year is yours again?? Can you post anything to the site (pictures, database owners info, files?)? I hope this repair goes well for you. #328, Odalisque, 1967, NYC Caleb D ?

Water has found its way down to the aft end of the 2x4 glassed in above the v- berth, and drips from there. My plan is to use a router (hooked up to a shop vac) to remove that strip of deck, core, and the rotten parts of trhe 2X4...all from above (leaving the v-berth ceiling intact and supported from below). I will open the deck as wide as necessary until I find dry, solid core. I will then glass in a new 2x4 (oak?). After re-coring and re- glassing up to deck level, I plan to epoxy teak strips to the deck rather than attempt to create a new non-skid. Also, I will replace the single bow cleat with port and starboard cleats (with backing plates). Any suggestions or advice gratefully appreciated. I will post pics. Thanks! Marty (Vancouver) Yahoo! Re: Update..... :)
I just added the T27 owners manual to the files section of the
website. There is some other useful stuff there as well but painfully little when compared to the old discussion forums from the old site. The sad fact is that Ken was not able to provide me with any raw data files containing the discussions. I am a programmer and would have had fun trying to reconstruct some of the threads or pulled my hair out. I gladly took what information he was able to send me though. I believe that anyone can add items to the Files, Photos, Links and Database sections of this site. At the same time Brian is working on the www.t-27.com website and has the discussion forums up and running. I am planning to join that website as well. I have also found yet another sailing website that is not Tartan specific which has a pretty active crowd of users and helpful archives (not unlike our old site). Go to sailboatowners.com, then click on 24 hour activity or search their archives by keyword. There are quite a few brands of boats represented by this site including Hunter, Benneteau, Siedelman, MacGregor to name but a few. |

Caleb,
Thanks for your efforts here. I agree that one site is best, whether it is on this yahoo forum or another rebuilt site... If you had the ability to reconstruct the bulk of the info from unformatted data files from the discussion forums and easily post it on Yahoo Groups that would be great. The discussion groups were the jewel in the crown of the old site. James |
prop question, a little late perhaps
Marty,
I discovered a file I uploaded from the old site that has the original T27 specs on it called "information.html" under the Files section here. The specs for props says for 2 blade use 13x12x1 and for 3 blade use 13x11x1. Sorry I could not find this info for you while I was in Hawai'i and you needed to buy a prop. Snow in NY and I cant wait for warmer weather to get our boating season underway. Neville D, Did you get to go up to the Maine coast (was it?) last season? If so, how was the trip? |
Re: prop question
Thanks for the reply!
I need to order the prop tomorrow to get it in time for the haul-out, so I'll go with the Cambel Sailor...lower drag apparently...and no customs and shipping hassles as its local.? Tearing out the icebox was a six hour job...but totally worth it. I knew it was huge, but I was still amazed to see it out. We had to take apart the trim around the top of the companionway to get it out of the cabin! Basically it was tabbed to a couple bulkheads in 3 places...hard to get to, but the tabs were quite thin and easy to cut (used a 6" grinder with a cutting blade...zip...done.) Now we are building a big mahogany plywood? box to use as a pantry...will hang it below the deck in the old icebox space. Will also put in a 32" long cooler sitting laterally (parallel to the bulkhead).? Can't believe how little insulation there was in that ice box. Will finish epoxying in the leaky outside access hatch tomorrow. Lots of chores to go, and we have to be out of our slip by May 15. Sounds like you are in a good place! Glad you found this group so quickly. We were all mortified that the old site was "lost". Ken was nice enough to send me the basic info (Links, Info pages) but the old pictures and discussion are apparently "lost". I am a bit west of you right now on the island of Oahu, HI but will try to measure the prop clearance when I get home after 3/9/07. Again, I wish the old discussion info was still available as I am certain that other owners have done the same as you are planning. We have a 2 fluke (blade, I have seen too many whales lately) prop and I am fairly certain that the 11 dimension is correct but do not hold me to it until I can measure it personally. Good luck with ripping out the old ice box. I currently use mine for storage of empty beer cans and other non-essential items and wish that the real estate could be put to better use. There are lots of sea turtles, whales and dolphins out here and a few Monk Seals around the island of Kuai. Good luck with all your spring chores. I feel your pain and I too miss the old website that Ken set up and maintained. I missed it so much that I set up a Yahoo Group called T27Owners and uploaded a bunch of info that Ken provided me. He was not able to provide me with a dump or file of the discussion forums though so all of that good stuff seems to be lost. I applaud you if you want to try and rebuild a new site but I would like to mention a few things: 1) the Yahoo Groups website is a free hosting and has room to upload pictures, text files, databases and has a discussion forum like feature built in via email (why rebuild the wheel?). 2) I have already uploaded and updated the Links and Info pages from the old site within the T27Owners group (Ken was kind enough to provide me with that baseline of information) 3) If you are convinced you want to take on building the t-27.com site (and maintaining and paying for it) then I salute you. My feeling is that there should be one place we can all go to get the info we were used to getting. 4) I am a currently out of work programmer and would be happy to write a C++ program to parse the old data files if we could get a hold of them in order to extract the useful forum information. If this could happen I would be happy to provide you with the info as well but again I think it might be just as easy to use the Yahoo Groups feature rather than try to re-build the website, page by page (it is free after all). Other sailboat owners have their own groups on Yahoo not that that should discourage you. If I could only get my hands on the unformatted data files from the discussion forums I might be able to reconstruct the bulk of the info and easily post it on Yahoo Groups. Have you checked it out? I feel your pain. Caleb Davison #328 Odalisque 1967 -----Original Message-----

prop question
Well, I've migrated. Thanks for setting this up so quickly!
A question already. Doing an early haul-out this year, and want to switch to a new 3 blade prop. We do a lot of motoring...still A4 power. Also going to remove the old VDO speedometer fin. I need to know if there is ample clearance for an 11 x 5 prop. Does anyone have one that large? I need to order before she's out of the water. Also, do any Canadians on the list know what the import duty will be on a $310 (US) prop? Deciding between the Indigo (US) and Campbel Sailor. Off to work on tearing out the ice box finally! Many thanks, Marty (Vancouver) "Poseidon" 1967 #342 |
new Tartan 27 owners site
thejiggermast
The message copied below is the latest I've been able to learn about
the old Tartan 27 Owners site. Many thanks to Brian for his efforts to discover what happened, and in setting up the new site. Hopefully the discussion information from the old site will be archived somewhere and we can integrate it into the new one. From Brian G.: I managed to reach Ken and I found out what happened to the old site. They had a hardware failure and lost all the discussion information. Between the hardware failure and his fights with spam he decided not to rebuild the site. He did offer to help me with pictures and what not from the old site. I think he may also be willing to transfer the old domain. My plan at the moment is to get an anchor set on the T-27.com site and figure out how to recreate the discussion groups and content. :) |
