Re: Chainplates

ksmith4312,
I am not an engineer and barely a mathematician with only a BA in the subject but I know a little about physics and construction. I would prefer to put chain plates outside on the hull than move the chain plates to the doghouse roof for a couple of reasons. 1) the angle created by the new position and the spreaders would not give the designed 'proper' support to the mast in any respectable kind of wind, 2) the doghouse roof is not as structurally sound (thick) as the hull (@1/2" on my #328 T27) and would be prone to flexing and stressing due to it's shape, whereas the hull is thick and solid, although it flexes a little bit, 3) the jib and sheets would still have to get around them and might make going forward more 'interesting', 4) refer to suggestion 5, 5) don't do it, it is not safe, practical or reasonable.
It turns out that the stainless steel bolts that go through the chain plates need air to remain healthy and that in the original Tartan design, these bolts were entirely glassed in, depriving them of air and when water intruded they decayed, leaving many of our sailboats vulnerable to chain plate failure. I replaced the aft chain plate after it pulled up for this (these) reasons on my T27. I used Ipe (a wood from South America) as the stock, the original chain plate (chromed perhaps?), and new stainless steel bolts and re-glassed the entire thing (behind the rudder). The 'best' way to fix this problem, IMHO, is to keep the SS bolts outside of the epoxy so they get air. Rebuild the old knee walls with a solid piece of wood (or other material; starboard comes to mind) and put the bolts in last OR move the whole thing outside, to the freeboard. You will still want some kind of backing plates if you mount the shrouds outboard.
Glad to know that I am not the only one contemplating this chore.

I ve been mulling over shrouds. I have seen a thread about placing the
chainplates outboard.

Was wondering about moving them inboard to the doghouse? Any tech guys
about the pro or cons.

Re: bilge pump location

Louis Girard

Brian,

Thank you very much for your information. All was just where you said.? The reason I did not find it the first time is because the manual bilge pump intake house was misplaced leaving a lot of water the bilge.? By repositioning the house deep in the bilge I was able to pump almost all the water (except about 1 inch at the very bottom) using the manual pump.? I tool the electric pump out. Also took batteries home were I have a charger.? The electric pump was extremely dirty. soaked in biodegradable soap used for boat exterior. after overnight soak rinsed with house, lots of 'scum' came out. I used garden house to force water thru pump. Soaked again overnight. Next day, rinsed again - looked like new, plugged to fully charged battery, it rattled for a few seconds, then began to pump the soapy watter at very good speed and pressure. Thank you for your insights.

Lou,

? Normally it¡¯s on the port side (left) about where the centerboard pennant (wire/rope) goes.? The Manual bilge pump (whaler) is typically in the cockpit with the pickup on the starboard (right) side of the same location.? Apparently that is the deepest location of the bilge.

?

Make sure your bilge hose is in good condition.? My PO had used garden hose which was brittle and narrow.? Bilge hose is all of $1/foot even at Wallet Marine.? I happen to like WM for the record.? The beat the tar out of our other local option Backwater Ships Store where the owner has a free nasty remark for every customer.?

?

My solution to this particular headache was a West Marine electronic switch bilge pump kit.? I like the cartridge setup because I can simply replace the pump in it¡¯s housing.? WM will probably continue to make it for eons to come.? The hard part is mounting the switch and pump.? You have to get it totally dry, and then clean it with acetone to get rid of the grease.? The PO had a piece of plywood in there to screw things too.? I used 5 minute putty style epoxy, although I¡¯m now very fond of 1 minute and 5 minute epoxy that WalMart sells.? It¡¯s cheap, not messy and easy easy easy.? Anyway, the bottom line is that you glue the sensor in place.? Knowing damn well you¡¯ll have to break it off some other day.? It beats fiberglassing a piece of wood in there and having 2 inches of water in your bilge that the switch can¡¯t see.

?

As for the pump, it has mounting ¡°ears¡±.? Use a pair of pliars to liberate those (break them off).? My pump just sits there and then I zip tied the hell out of the hose.? The pump ¡ as we say in Texas, Ain¡¯t going no where¡.? Really, who cares if it moves an inch forward or back?? It¡¯s the exact width of the bottom of the bilge (once you remove the tabs) and so it will just sit there and get you down to ? of an inch.

?

Make sure you clear crap out of your bilge.? There are little pipes that run through the bulkheads¡. Things get in there that shouldn¡¯t and clog them up.

?

I keep two ¡°oil sorbent¡± float thingies (bout $10/ea from WM) in the section right in front of the engine.? This gives me the assurance of getting 99% of anything that gets in my bilge.? Seeing as I have an old Diesel engine¡. Yea, well it¡¯s good to have them there anyway.? They will suck up the oil should it get in your bilge.

Sid:

My boat is running fine and I do not have a specific need in mind but I will like to see the inventory when you get it.? I am assuming you may want to sell some of it.? My tach sometimes acts up so this may be a candidate for replacement.

Capt. Sidney, I've found my old hatch, and as expected, the fiberglass is in pretty good, not fantastic, condition, but the translucent part is shot---crazed, scratched, and actually broken.?? The good news is, that part is fastened in, and I presume quite replaceable.?? Would it be of any help to you?

Your venture sounds terrific from a refurber's standpoint, but I wonder if it isn't a little like the wine business:? How do you make a small fortune in the wine business??? Start with a large one.??? The concern is, that the cost of such refurb/resto- mods may bring the price a good deal higher than the (BUC) market will bear.?? I certainly know that all the labors I've performed, if compensated, would push the price of my boat way out of whack for a Tartan 27, if not out of reach. ?? That said, I absolutely love the idea. ? I know for sure there's no vent cut into my hatch, but I'd be pretty sure it's scratched/crazed, probably original.?? I don't think there's much if anything wrong with the fiberglass; and perhaps the plexiglas is replaceable? ? I didn't waste much time on it because I knew I wasn't going to use it anyway.?? I think the hinges are still attached, too.??? Anyway, I'll check it and drop you a line over the weekend.??? BTW, Waterford is landlocked, in very Northern Virginia, in Loudoun County.?? Where in Matthews are you from??? Regards---?

Ha Capt. Warren, yes I am looking for a forward hatch.I have just bought my boat(haven't brought to my home port yet)off the Tartans owners web site.Boat has one now but has had a solar vent installed?in it and the clear section has cracked?bad and leaks. And with having 800 miles of sailing to bring her home I would like to have it alittle more secured hatch or it could get nasty.Waterford Va sounds familiar as I am from Mathews Va but now live outside Savannah Ga.Tartan can build me a teak one for $800.00 but when you spend $4,500.00 for the whole boat with a diesel something just doesn't work there.Anyway thanks if you have one and it's not in bad shape let me know and we can work something out if you like.(whats funny is I can find new ones for pearsons, odays, catalinas, hunters and they are only $200.00)go figure.Oh the guy that with Tartan is also from
White Stone Va.Thanks Sidney

If you're talking about the forward hatch, and not the companionway hatch, I might be able to help you.?? I removed mine in favor of a Lewmar hatch, and I'm pretty sure I've still got it lying around somewhere.?? I'm sure it's not in tip-top shape but it might be a whole lot better than what you've got---or maybe yours is missing?? Where are you? ? Regards,? Capt Armando, what information would you like?If you want to know what he has,he's making a list for me as I have offered to buy everything he has and would be glad to assit you with a needed part.I do know he has a rudder ,centerboard, some rigging, factory gauges but what gauges he didn't know, some teak parts here again he didn't know as?everything is boxed and he has not even look at the stuff until last week for the first time in a few years and he's in his eighties so if you'll tell me what you are looking for I will help any way I can.I am going in a couple of weeks with a trailor to pick-up everything and?bring them back to Ga.Thanks and let me know Sidney??

Delayed response for some emails

T27Owners group members: For some reason several valid replies to various topics by a few of you end up in the yahoo group's 'potential spam' folder. I have no idea why this is happening as all of your email addresses are in the members list. Once these emails are in the 'potential spam' folder I (administrator) have to change their status from 'pending' to 'approved' and then the messages are sent out immediately. I guess that this is why Brian G., down in Texas, set up the www.t-27.com website so as to not be held to the vagaries of the yahoo groups forums rules & regs.
Until I can get either this problem fixed or a reasonably satisfactory answer from yahoo, those emails will accrue in the 'spam' folder until I check in and free them. I will try to check in daily but barring that if any other members want to be granted administration rights to the group to do the same, then please let me know. In the meantime, please accept my apologies for something that seems to be inherent in the yahoo groups server software.
While this group serves as a decent place for Tartan 27' owners to exchange ideas I encourage all 100+ of you to check out Brian's www.t-27.com site; his forum section 'feels' a bit more like the old www.tartanowners.com and is perhaps a little easier to view by topic, but it needs more postings.
In any case, it feels like Spring up here in N.Y. and #328 was launched last weekend. Perhaps a first sail tomorrow.
My best to all.

I certainly know that all the labors I've performed, if compensated, would push the price of my boat way out of whack for a Tartan 27, if not out of reach. ?? That said, I absolutely love the idea. ? My cell number is 703-517-9090, but there's no way I'd be selling mine---too much blood, sweat, and tears invested, and the end is within view, anyway.?? Regards---Warren Stein

Capt. Hi Sidney----Well, I'm sorry to see another Tartan depart the Chesapeake; but home's where you drop your anchor, I suppose.?? I know for sure there's no vent cut into my hatch, but I'd be pretty sure it's scratched/crazed, probably original.?? I don't think there's much if anything wrong with the fiberglass; and perhaps the plexiglas is replaceable? ? I didn't waste much time on it because I knew I wasn't going to use it anyway.?? I think the hinges are still attached, too.??? Anyway, I'll check it and drop you a line over the weekend.??? BTW, Waterford is landlocked, in very Northern Virginia, in Loudoun County.??

If there are any parts of things that you might need for the boat, I suggest that you place a free ad in the Tartan 27 website for? your needs. I have seen a lot of things that were very supportive to a rebuild or project boat. There are some people that have parted out their boats.
?
Please get your boat listed on the website and send in some pictures to them too.
?
Good luck with your new old boat.

Everyone,

As I finish the restoration on Scarlet #79, from her once sorry state,
I find a need about 6 feet of stainless 3/4 inch rub-rail. If any of
you have some left over from prior projects let me know. Otherwise I
believe I will have to order a 12 foot section which means I will have
about 6 feet to sell.

Re: T27 Yawl and Sloop PHRF

Chris?et al,
?
I found some PHRF information via US Sailing. The link is below and then click on High/Low?Mean Ratings and scroll down to Tartan 27. A PHRF of 234 appears to be the avarage for a sloop rig and 240 for the yawl. Hopefully this is what you are looking for. ???

Any comments as the ratings for either of the boats would be great.

Re: replacement sink

Matthias Klemm

Thank you for checking, Warren.

That measurement doesn't agree with mine. My sink is 13" by 17.5". So I'll find another solution.

The other day I was at Home Depot and they had a line of fiberglass sinks. Nothing that would fit instantly but as long as I can find one a little bigger I can make it work and save a lot of time that I would have spent fabricating my own. Anyway I was?surprised?to find fiberglass sinks there at all. Though they call them acrylic sinks. But if you look at the underside it certainly is fiberglass. Maybe they just use some kind of acrylic instead of gelcoat. However they look nice and shiny and won't rust like mine did.

Thank you again for the offer,

Matthias

Yeah, Caleb, I'm getting closer and closer to making my own sink. I'm pretty sure now, that I don't want another stainless steel sink and probably make a plug off the old sink and then use gelcoat and polyester resin.

The trip to Stuart never materialized because my todo list was not getting any shorter and the marina in Green Cove Springs is located rather?conveniently?close to my sister's house so I can travel back and forth to fabricate and install stuff. But I did have a nice little voyage to St. Augustine with my daughter and her friend for spring break.

My galley sink has more than one hole!

When I got the boat I noticed a lot of rusty spots and tiny little pin?
holes all over the stainless
steel sink. I was trying to find a replacement without any luck and I?
coated the underside of
the sink with epoxy. It was working fine til yesterday when the wash?
water was starting to
find its way into the cabinet and finally onto the floor.I was pretty sure the sink was original but when looking for?
replacement I cannot find the
right size which is 13x17.5".
I also would love to replace it with a plastic (ABS or fiberglass) sink?
since I end up doing the

Anyone know where to look? I looked all day already.
