Welcome - The 1963 and 1968 brochures list the fiberglass Fish at 139# and if you just happen to have a Mahogany and plywood kit model from the same era, it lists at 142#. I weighed one on a bathroom scale once by standing it on its tail. I put a couple of 2X4's down to protect the gudgeon and two of us stood the boat up. It weighed about 141# (minus the 2X4's), as I recall. Wayne -----Original Message----- |

I can't think of a reason why you shouldn't car-top. People have been car-topping Sunfish almost from the boat's inception. It's a little tough to get the boat on the car single-handed. With two people, loading works just fine. It strikes me that the roof of a Grand Am is not very long. If the rack crossbars are close together you might consider also tying the boat at the front and rear.... and car-topping is nearly always done with the boat upside down. There's an old promotional photo of a Sunfish being car-topped on a Chevy Corvair (of all things) in the Group PHOTOS section in the Literature folder. If it worked on that car you should have no problem. On the other hand - if you are thinking about getting a new Mini Cooper any time soon, I suggest also getting a trailer. 8^) My 2 on racks..... The most substantial rack I know of is called Quick-N-Easy. It works on vehicles that have rain gutters. You build the crossbars - typically out of padded and carpeted 2X4's. Yakima and Thule are probably the other racks of choice especially if your vehicle doesn't have gutters. Happy Trails, Wayne -----Original Message----- |
Sunfish Weight
Hi Folks ..... New to this message board .... so "hi" to all. I own
an older Sunfish; but not sure how old(it is an Alcort.... I suspect it is from the late 60's). On the internet, I see lots of writings about weight, and how the fish needs to be 135 lbs or less (especially if racing). In looking under the deck (through portal) I see no signs of moisture, and I have no idea how much my boat weighs. But still, I am curious what it might weigh. Has anyone had any experience with actually weighing a Sunfish ....can you tell me the best way to do it? Regards/JPM |
Who Car Tops their Sunfish?

I am considering trying to carry my "new" sunfish on top of my
wife's car, it is a 97 Grand Am. I purchased some racks that seem to be pretty stable when mounted. Does anyone have any comments/suggestions? My wife is very wary about this concerned about how the boat will adversly effect the way the car drives especially if the wind that i love so much is blowing. Thanks in advance for any help. Re: Sunfish Weight
Hey JPM,
I weighed my 'fish by balancing it on it's side on a bathroom scale. It helps to have a second person to prevent it from falling over. Also, make sure the floor is level (I use the garage floor) so the scale is accurate. I check it once a year to see if it is absorbing water. Joe |

Verrrrrrry Interesting.... Looks like what you have there is an old style rudder adapted (and I use the term loosely) to work in the new style gudgeon. This should be a simple fix. You can look around for a new or used rudder cheek assembly and fit it to your existing rudder blade. With a little creative modification to the tiller tangs you'll be on your way. How much? New cheeks will run you about $55, used $??.00 Try this dealer for new parts: Check out this link for used parts: Post a "Parts Wanted" message on this board: OBTW Your "Tiny URL" works just fine, but Yahoo Groups requires a login to proceed to the photos. .... and by the hull number it looks like you have a 1976 model manufactured in June - probably it was built in June 1975. I don't know what convention AMF used for the model year change-over. Many boat companies change over in August so new model production gets cranked up a month or two in advance of that. Regardless, your boat is in the new rudder era - only it's missing the new rudder portion. Oh, great photos too...., Wayne -----Original Message----- |

Re: Rudder help
Malcolm & gang,
Thanks for your input. Take a look if you can and let me know what you think... My boat is a '75 model according to the serial number. I have uploaded photos of the jury-rigged rudder sustem . You'll notice there is a steel clamp like the ones used for a auto radiator hose holding the two cast parts together at the bottom of the coupling next to the wood block. The wood block was drilled so that it more or less sits against the transom when the threaded bolt is dropped in from above. This is surely not the factory set-up. It would not surprise me if this is not the original set of parts for this boat either, but I'm not sure what I need to best return it to the proper configuration. I can't really tell what I need from the rudder diagram in the group files. I'd rather not spring for an upgraded rudder system for this tired boat right now but the wood block just isn't right. For the cost of a couple of upgrade kits, I could replace the boat & trailer with a similar one. New gelcoat and sails would probably be advised ahead of the upgrade. John,
Sounds like you have an old-style rudder system, that was jury-rigged when some part broke. I recommend converting to the new-style system, which is not too hard to accomplish and will be much more satisfactory for the life of your Sunfish. There are instructions and photos about this (a common project for pre-1973 boats) at best, Malcolm Dickinson |
Long Weekend Broad Reach
Ed
Hi All,
I had the pleasure of taking my "fish-clone" out for the long weekend to Lake Pillsbury in Northern California. (Above Clear Lake). The conditions were testy sometimes due to camping at waters edge in the lee of the forest. However, several times the lake was stirred up by some great gusts and sustained winds. I do not know how fast the winds were blowing so I will try to describe the experience so someone may have a comment. Please recall that I have never sailed with another "Fish" Skipper so I have no benchmark for comparrison. In the most agressive broad reach I was hiked out as far as I could lean with my back straight in line with the deck and everthing from my rump and above over the water. I weigh about 235 and am in pretty good shape so I had a lot of force on the "fish", holding her flat. Even so I was barely keeping her from blowing over with manuvering on the occasional gust. The mast and booms were making creeking noises and I was concerned about hardware failure. When I was hiked out as far as I could lean I noticed that the bow wake from my "fish" began from behind the mast because the bow was so far out of the water and up on plane. When I looked to the stern I had a 6 to 8 inch rooster tail being thrown up by the rudder assembly. My rudder is free pivoting and has no spring a was fairly close to level with the surface of the water. I felt like I was really cookin! What do you think? Was I gettting pretty much maxed out? Ed |

Elvstrom bailer gasket
I took the Express Wind out for the first time and discovered that
the bailer is leaking. A quick search on the internet revealed that the Elvstrom/Andersen automatic bailers can leak because of a bad gasket. The gasket repair kit for my model is $15 and is not in stock. So, I thought I should be able to do this myself quite easily. I have some 1/16" gasket material which I tried to fix the bailer with. It comes out to be too thin. I need a 2mm gasket (neoprene rubber) to do this job. I have looked EVERYWHERE I can think of and nobody sells any kind of neoprene sheet at all. The only source I did find was at a local Elliotts Hardware store that only had the 1/16" gasket material. Does anybody know where I might be able to get 2mm neoprene rubber sheets? Thanks, Adi |

Welcome to the group. Go ahead and log into the group web site and look through the FILES section. There you will find a diagram of both the new and old style rudder and hardware. If you can post a couple of photos of your set up in the PHOTOS section, that will help everyone who has advice to share. Thanks, Wayne -----Original Message----- |
New to the Sunfish
I just bought a rather tired sunfish for my 9 year old to play with.
I think it is a mid 70's model. I am just learning that there is an early and late style rudder mechanism. Mine does not have a spring kick-up mechanism, so I assume it is the old one. The one I have has been messed with by a previous owner and I either need to upgrade or return it to original function. The way it has been used is allowing the tiller arm to scrape the aluminum edge on the stern to the point it is seriously grinding away the wood. The gudgeons don't seem to fit the casting piece as far as far as I can tell, and the way it is rigged is using a block of wood with a drilled hole in it. This is really a sad piece of engineering. Can anyone point me to a good close up diagram of the early or old style gudgeon to rudder connection, or even better provide a photo of theirs? I have a cheapo digital that I will attempt to use to get decent photos of what I have and post them this evening. Thanks, John C Hobie 18 Sunfish Louisville, Ky |
Internet Tech Tip
Wayne
Hello Everyone,
There have been occasions when someone wanted to share a web page through their message post, but the URL was so long that it word wrapped. An example would be when you see something on ebay that you want to alert the group to. Ebay links are several lines long when they are word-wrapped. Word wrapping renders a link un-clickable. Here's a way to get around that problem..... Copy the link to your clipboard and then visit Tiny URL .... Paste the link in the Tiny URL input box and get back - you guessed it - a tiny URL. This link will now work in your email post. Enjoy, Wayne |
