Malcolm & gang,
Thanks for your input. Take a look if you can and let me know what
you think...
My boat is a '75 model according to the serial number. I have
uploaded photos of the jury-rigged rudder sustem
. You'll notice there is a steel clamp like
the ones used for a auto radiator hose holding the two cast parts
together at the bottom of the coupling next to the wood block. The
wood block was drilled so that it more or less sits against the
transom when the threaded bolt is dropped in from above. This is
surely not the factory set-up. It would not surprise me if this is
not the original set of parts for this boat either, but I'm not sure
what I need to best return it to the proper configuration. I can't
really tell what I need from the rudder diagram in the group files.
I'd rather not spring for an upgraded rudder system for this tired
boat right now but the wood block just isn't right. For the cost of
a couple of upgrade kits, I could replace the boat & trailer with a
similar one. New gelcoat and sails would probably be advised ahead
of the upgrade.
Thanks in advance,
John

John,
Sounds like you have an old-style rudder system, that was jury-
rigged when
some part broke.
I recommend converting to the new-style system, which is not too
hard to
accomplish and will be much more satisfactory for the life of your
Sunfish.
There are instructions and photos about this (a common project for
pre-1973
boats) at
best,
