Hello John,
Welcome to the group.
Go ahead and log into the
group web site and look through the FILES section. There you will find a
diagram of both the new and old style rudder and hardware.
If you can post a couple of photos of your set up in the PHOTOS section,
that will help everyone who has advice to share.
Thanks,
Wayne

Subject: [sunfish_sailor] New to the Sunfish
I just bought a rather tired sunfish for my 9 year old to play with.
I think it is a mid 70's model. I am just learning that there is an
early and late style rudder mechanism. Mine does not have a spring
kick-up mechanism, so I assume it is the old one. The one I have has
been messed with by a previous owner and I either need to upgrade or
return it to original function. The way it has been used is allowing
the tiller arm to scrape the aluminum edge on the stern to the point
it is seriously grinding away the wood. The gudgeons don't seem to
fit the casting piece as far as far as I can tell, and the way it is
rigged is using a block of wood with a drilled hole in it. This is
really a sad piece of engineering. Can anyone point me to a good
close up diagram of the early or old style gudgeon to rudder
connection, or even better provide a photo of theirs?
I have a cheapo digital that I will attempt to use to get decent
photos of what I have and post them this evening.
Thanks,
John C
