Re: What does it mean when engine backfires during cold start
I have lots of backfires when I first hooked up my transplanted EJ22. They were caused by my not realizing that The ECUs signal ground (connected to the engine) and power ground needed to be separate.

Re: What does it mean when engine backfires during cold start
It kinda sounds like you may have a leaky/pissing injector. It sound's like the fuel in one of them isn't atomising properly. Once that cylinder gets hotter that condition will go away. Get all four

John: Do you have a way to scan the motor for codes? If not, secondary guessing would indicate a timing related issue. The major pieces that would cause this condition if failed are cam position

Re: What does it mean when engine backfires during cold start
Not intended as snarky...but really... Aren't they the mechanic that should be telling you what it needs? Once it's in, there is nothing different about a Subaru engine in a VW or Subaru. Andy

Re: No Crank/Start
Hoping this is resolved since it is an older thread but. . .I had a crank/no start recently on a SVX. This was after reinstalling a radio, cigarette lighter and electrical volt meter behind the dash.

96 legacy (not outback) engine
Dear Forum, I have a 86 van with a 92 EJ22 engine that blew. Can I replace the long block with an ej22 from a 96 legacy (non outback)? Thank you for your help. C.

Re: High and sticky RPM
Yes, the engine was running before the swap but I had the long block rebuilt. ?From there I replaced all the sensors. ?Every one of them. ?It is basically a brand new motor. ?It's all Subaru.

Re: Main relay stays on with engine off, key out!
It should connect through a fuse to ignition power through the ignition switch. Use a test light to make sure you are connecting to ignition switched power? (at the black box?)

Yes it connects to the ignition switch. Is it not a loose green/red coming out of the harness? Is it not labeled IGN + or something? Did they switch wire colors? You could test the loose wires with a

Where does ignition power connect to the harness? It should be a fused connection. I assume it's no voltage there. Or is there? What color is the wire. Mine was green red all the way through the
