Re: What does it mean when engine backfires during cold start

Air conditioner compressor control is almost the?same on every?car until very recently.

This is a job for someone who knows the subaru boxer engines and their ECUs.? ?Otherwise you'll likely pay for a long learning curve..? ?.? ?

Re: What does it mean when engine backfires during cold start

Sounds like a lean "pop" on cold start. Fuel management diagnosis is super easy and most above average techs should have no problem with that. An injector problem would be constant, timing as well. Grounds are always critical, but they are easiest to verify and diagnose (check my other posts). Start with verifying long term fuel trims as they are controlling fuel on cold start. any minor problems hot which are being compensated by closed loop will have major effect on warmup. Check coolant temp and intake temps should be the same on startup. check MAP voltages if speed density or do Volumetric Efficiency test if Air flow controlled. Range test o2 sensors. All should take 10 minutes. If your tech doesn't understand, find a new tech.

Re: What does it mean when engine backfires during cold start

Google: (Subaru) engine backfires when cold or during cold start for some information. A good mechanic or technician will listen to your description of symptoms but not your diagnosis. Your should be reading engine codes for a start if you want to DIY.

I have lots of backfires when I first hooked up my transplanted EJ22.? ?They were caused by my not realizing that The ECUs signal ground (connected to the engine) and power ground needed to be separate.?

John: Do you have a way to scan the motor for codes? If not, secondary guessing would indicate a timing related issue. The major pieces that would cause this condition if failed are cam position sensor, crank position sensor or timing belt alignment. If these are all good, report back. Also, what year and model is the donor engine from??

Not intended as snarky...but really...

Aren't they the mechanic that should be telling you what it needs?

Once it's in, there is nothing different about a Subaru engine in a VW or Subaru.

Re: No Crank/Start

Hoping this is resolved since it is an older thread but. . .I had a crank/no start recently on a SVX. This was after reinstalling a radio, cigarette lighter and electrical volt meter behind the dash. I retraced and cleaned everything, literally. with no luck. Replaced ECU with no luck. No CEL codes so assumption was cam and crank sensors were good. I replaced the main relay and fuel pump relay out of frustration even though they tested okay. Started right up with much joy!

On a side note, hope all our West Coast brethren are okay.

Christopher, I would rely on the independent Subaru mechanics in your area, they should know of differences. Paul

Re: O2 sensor Bank 1 sensor 2

how did you resolve this?

Re: High and sticky RPM

Yes, the engine was running before the swap but I had the long block rebuilt. ?From there I replaced all the sensors. ?Every one of them. ?It is basically a brand new motor. ?It's all Subaru. ?What I am doing now is connecting the VSS. ?It was a nice day and I was in town (we have had nice days but I also travel for my job so its hit or miss). ?I had already purchased the GW cruise so I am going to use that VSS in a custom way. ?I removed the cluster and mounted the VSS. ?I then ran a 10 conductor cable from the dash to the engine bay which was about has far as I got today figuring all this out. ?My plan is to install the CC in the engine bay along with a small panel to connect the VSS, limit switches and controls. ?I will run the VSS to the CC as it is 12V but split it to another circuit with a relay with supplied 5V from the ECU and run that signal back to the VSS on the harness. ?My hopes is that will finally conquer the high idle issue.?

HA ¡... I obsess about minimizing exposed parts under my Syncro.

Funny story, The picture associated with my account show my bus sitting in a slurry of salt water and sand . we drove the beach at low tide for ?30 miles south of Golfo de Santa Clara to fish and camp . ?once in a while a panga with local fishermen might drift by and wave . driving back I sunk in some wet sand? up to the sliding door . tide was coming in and I was about to start removing anything salvageable . In the end, The Mexican federales who had been spying on us all week appeared out of nowhere and yanked me out with their Hummer (2 ford explorers in our group couldn¡¯t do it) . That was with the ?VW engine on board . Since then I have added every possible skid plate and removed anything that didn¡¯t have to be under there. So ¡ I actually have two different wheel mounted ?ones on the shelf in my garage purchased when I did my first conversion in the early 2000¡¯s .. ?but ?I am in the camp of using the speed sensor in the Instrument cluster . ?maybe I¡¯m lucky with the OBD 1 setup I have but I never had an issue. its only when I used evoscan while diving that I noticed the 2x speed. For the syncro I suspect someone has tried to use the ?propshaft for a signal which would keep things a foot higher out of the elements.

Hi .?

?I am doing my best with evoscan without support .?
?quick question .?
?I know there are many ways to get a speed signal back to the ECU . Mine is a sensor off the back of the speedometer . i drove while logging data with the EVOscan yesterday and to my surprise I am reading a much higher speed than indicated on the speedometer of GPS . . I have used this setup for 100k miles on the previous longblock so i cant imagine it's that big of an issue but has anyone seen the need to adjust the speed feed ...?

Re: Main relay stays on with engine off, key out!

It should connect through a fuse to ignition power through the ignition switch. Use a test light to make sure you are connecting to ignition switched power? (at the black box?)
