Re: Modifying an Aloris tool holder

Hi There,

I have modified a couple of Aloris tool holders using HSS.? In my case,
I had a couple BX1 tool holders that wouldn't fit the dovetail on my tool
post (an Aloris BXA).? I have a large 60° cutter and I made a couple of
light passes (about .003") to open up the dovetail to make it fit.

I had an occasion that I needed to lower the tool block and I just moved
the tool post on the compound so the dovetail section hung off the side
enough to allow the tool block to clear the top of the compound.?

Good Luck!

If your tool holder is made of Chinesium, you might be able to mill it down a bit. If it is Dorian or Aloris, it will probably be better to grind as those brands do a better job at hardening than the Chinese do.?

Give it a shot. You are only risking an endmill or a couple of inserts on a face mill.?

That’s a really cool trick, but my problem is I need the tool to go further down and it is bottoming on the compound. Only solutions I see are to face off the bottom of the tool holder, or grind down the compound (which I am NOT going to do) so the tool can drop down to the spindle centerline.

I have bxa tool holders. I have a 13” SouthBend turret lathe. I made all my tool holders including Aloris to 3/4” openings.
I used a half inch carbide two flute endmill
And had no problem.

AXA tool post is meant for lathes 9-12 inches
BXA tool post is meant for lathes 10-15 inches

Using a BXA puts your lathe at the low end of the size range. Clearly it has not been a major issue until now.?

Just 2 cents

I’ve done these with a carbide end mill and cutting oil. Slow speed slow feed.

I have not done it, but I have several used CXA holders that milled for larger tool holders. Shouldn’t be a problem doing with a carbide bit. Maybe with a bottle of coolant to spry on the cut.

Proper Pilots motor.

Re: 9 A-C Milling attachment FS on PM Forum

I have a milling machine, but, some jobs are still done on the lathe with my double swivel milling slide, did think once in a senior moment that I could do without it, but a job came to me soon after which was better done on the lathe using this attachment, so, half a dozen times a year, wouldn’t do without it, I would keep it unless I had two.
