I totally dismantled my 9" SB and took it to a local engine rebuild shop to
have it cleaned.
The use a Caustic Dip tank which is pre heated to about 110 F. All the parts
where put in the tank and left

was made in June 1966. Cool............

Paul,
SB is acutally reasonable on the wicks for the shaft and tailstock.
Cost was $3 per foot and a foot is a lot of wick, like would last you
a lifetime. Its a round felt solid rope about 3/16

The stuff I have seen previously was white or light creme in color. If you

I did see hard felt (SAE 20S2) on page 3015 of http://www.mcmaster.com/
online catalog. It says its "good for bearing seals, lubrication wicks and
fluid transfer components." I think I might try a 12"

Does anybody know of a source for the thick felt that is used way-wipers on
the carriage as well as the felt used as wicks on shafts? I hate to even
