The two agencies will hire four (4) archaeologists and four (4) architectural historians to be District Cultural Resource Officers. Individuals in these positions will have an unparalleled opportunities and responsibilities to shape the direction and performance of cultural resource investigations conducted on the Department's $1.5 billion annual design and construction program. The ninth position will join the Bureau for Environmental Quality team in its ongoing re-engineering effort and to support the Cultural Resource Roundtable which consists of all of PennDOT's cultural resource professionals. The eleven PennDot Engineering Districts have been grouped into five service regions. Each region will have a team comprised of an archaeologist and architectural historian. The team will guide the Section 106 process starting early in project design, work holistically on all cultural resource issues related to a project, and participate interactively with a design team of project engineers, designers, and environmental specialists. Greater Pittsburgh Region consists of Districts 1-0 (Franklin) and 11-0 (Pittsburgh). Southwest Region consists of Districts 9-0 (Hollidaysburg, near Altoona), 10-0 (Indiana), and 12-0 (Uniontown). Northcentral Region consists of Districts 2-0 (Clearfield), District 3-0 (Montoursville (near Williamsport), and District 4-0 (Dunmore, near Scranton). Southeast Region consists of Districts 5-0 (Allentown) and 8-0 (Harrisburg). Greater Philadelphia Region consists of District 6-0 (Saint Davids, west of Philadelphia). All candidates must meet the professional qualification standards in Architectural History or Archaeology defined in the Secretary of Interior's Standards. Candidates must have knowledge and understanding of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. In order to maintain maximum flexibility in staffing, positions will be filled sequentially. This means that there will be more choices for the first candidates selected and fewer choices for the last candidates. PennDot Positions: Two archaeologists - one in Greater Pittsburgh Region based in District 1-0; one in Northcentral or Southeast Region, based in District 2-0, 5-0, or 8-0. Two architectural historians - one in Greater Philadelphia Region, based in District 6-0; one in Northcentral or Southeast Region, based in District 3-0, 5-0, or 8-0. Please note that although job duties are nearly identical and that all positions are considered State of Pennsylvania employment, the employer will be either PennDOT or IUP with minor differences in conditions of employment. The Interagency Agreement between IUP and PennDOT last for 3 years. At the end of the Agreement, in the Year 2002, PennDOT will add five additional positions; individuals working for IUP will be encouraged to apply for these additional positions. The salary range starts around $33,000.
