About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Cultural Resources Field Technician to join our West Chester, PA or Pittsburgh, PA offices and assist with cultural resources management projects. Our office is actively involved in supporting solar energy and other renewable energy developments throughout the region, ensuring compliance and preservation in line with sustainable development goals.

This is a temporary, field-based assignment typically offering at least 40 hours per week, expected to run until August 1st, 2025. Priority consideration will be given to candidates located in or within driving distance of the West Chester, PA or Pittsburgh, PA areas.

?

Applicant must be willing to participate in a drug testing and alcohol screening as part of the pre-employment process, as some projects require such screenings.


What you will accomplish

  • Perform complete archaeological surveying and field testing.
  • Conduct shovel test pits and excavation units.
  • Execute data recovery and associated field recording.
  • Complete field forms, digital photography, and in-field mapping.
  • Assist with archaeological office and lab work.
  • Participate in GPS data collection in the field under the supervision of a Field Lead or Project Archaeologist.
  • Adhere to the safety program and look out for the safety of others, promptly communicating and mitigating safety hazards.?


Experience and qualifications for success

  • Completion of an accredited archaeological field school.
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk, and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather (including extreme heat and humidity), rugged terrain, often at high altitudes.
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Current valid driver’s license and ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field.
  • 6+ months experience with a wide range of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, testing, excavation, methodology and monitoring.
  • Knowledge of Collector and Survey123.

Job Description

This position will assist in the completion of archaeological projects (survey, monitoring, testing, and/or data recovery) for AZTEC's Cultural Resource Group. The position involves leading or assisting a Field Director in leading archaeological fieldwork, as well as performing lab work, database entry, and report preparation. Projects may be located in the Southwest or Great Basin regions. Below is a list of duties for this position.

  • Assist with and/or direct archaeological field investigations (testing, data recovery, monitoring, survey, and field documentation)
  • Assist and instruct crew members in the use of proper field methods and completion of field forms based on information provided in a work plan and/or field manual

The incumbent in this position serves as the Deputy State Archaeologist within the Georgia Office of the State Archaeologist (OSA). Under the direction of the Georgia State Archaeologist, the primary duties of this position include management of the day-to-day activities of the OSA including the supervision of one staff member. The successful candidate will focus on managing workflow to provide archaeological technical assistance to the Parks and Historic Sites Division (PHSD) and the Wildlife Resources Division (WRD) concerning compliance with the Georgia Environmental Policy Act (GEPA) and state stewardship laws and partnering with PHDS staff to develop new and update existing interpretive signage, displays, and exhibits. The successful applicant will triage all incoming cultural resource review requests, assign them for review, and ensure they are completed in a timely manner. These projects will require both desktop review as well as field reconnaissance surveys primarily on state lands managed by WRD and PHSD throughout Georgia. Additional duties will include coordinating with partner organizations to provide archaeological outreach programming, providing cultural resource technical assistance to members of the public and other partnering agencies and assist the State Archaeologist with DNR’s NAGPRA compliance. This position will require occasional overnight travel with long days in remote locations. BCI and our Mission

Bat Conservation International (BCI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to ending bat extinctions worldwide, seeks a full-time Cultural Resource Specialist to join BCI’s Conservation Department. The Cultural Resource Specialist will work as part of the Restoration Team in the Habitat Protection & Restoration Program (HP&R).

Primary Responsibilities and Expectations

The successful candidate must be currently permitted or qualified to be permitted as a Principal Investigator/Project Director on state, Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Forest Service lands in at least one of the following states: Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. Preference will be given to candidates who are BLM permittable in southwest New Mexico. The Cultural Resources Specialist will oversee and conduct fieldwork and reporting for cultural resource inventories based in the American Southwest. They will work directly with BCI’s Cultural Resource Coordinator to coordinate with internal teams in HP&R and external partners to support BCI’s work in the states. Cultural resources work includes overseeing field crew and reporting writing staff, conducting fieldwork, documenting and analyzing archaeological sites, completing cultural resource inventory forms, and writing archaeological technical reports.

BCI’s cultural resource inventories are primarily done in combination with subterranean bat surveys to gather information on wildlife and cultural resources at abandoned mines. The inventories are used to guide treatment recommendations to protect important cultural and biological resources during safeguarding and closure of abandoned mines on public lands. BCI’s cultural resource inventories also include block and linear pedestrian surveys of areas selected for wildlife habitat improvement and restoration projects. This position will also assist with other project duties, including data and photo organization, map production, conducting research, and other tasks.

Our program highly encourages all staff to seek out opportunities within other teams and specialties to better understand the full capacity of the HP&R program and to build working relationships with colleagues outside of their respective specialties and teams. The ideal candidate will be willing and able to provide writing and fieldwork assistance to other teams within HP&R during lulls in cultural resources work. BCI offers on-the-job training, and opportunities for additional safety/medical certifications may be available. Traversing challenging terrain on foot and conducting surveys in inclement, uncomfortable, and variable weather is a part of all field-based work within HP&R.

Work Schedule

The Cultural Resource Specialist is a full-time, primarily remote position. The work schedule will vary based on project needs and availability. The primary duties of the position are to serve as Principal Inspector/Field Director for cultural resource inventories in permitted regions. This includes coordinating with coworkers and external partners and leading fieldwork and reporting tasks. The Cultural Resource Specialist will also assist with fieldwork and other project duties for cultural resource inventories led by other BCI staff in other regions as project needs and availability require. Reporting tasks will be completed remotely from a home office. Office work will comprise the majority of duties.

Fieldwork may include up to two field sessions per month during the field season. When fieldwork is expected, advance notice of 1–2 months is generally provided. Fieldwork requires traveling to project sites and living and working in or near project locations. Projects are often in remote, mountainous terrain near small communities with limited services. Field sessions typically last five weekdays, including paid travel days, though some projects may last longer and may include working weekends. Travel and fieldwork days range from 8–12 working hours, sometimes more. Overnight lodging will usually be provided in single-occupancy hotel rooms or shared house rentals with private bedrooms for each team member. Some projects may require overnight camping; BCI will provide basic camping equipment (tent, sleeping bag and pad, stove, etc.) as needed. Meals, equipment, and travel costs will be reimbursed to federal per diem standards.

Additional opportunities within HP&R – if interest and availability permit – may include conducting subterranean wildlife surveys, generating subterranean survey reports, protecting and restoring water resources for wildlife, assisting with agave plantings, generating post-restoration activity reports, assisting with drone surveys, drafting National Environmental Policy Act compliance documents, grant writing, and assisting with data management.

Position Overview

§? Serve as Principal Investigator/Project Director for projects located in at least one of the following states: Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. Preference will be given to candidates who are BLM permittable in southwest New Mexico.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Administers the Arizona Antiquities Act (AAA) through the ABOR Policy Manual, Chapter VIII.
  • Representing the ASM Director to clients working to comply with the AAA.
  • Reviewing qualifications of potential Project Directors and Principal Investigators.
  • Reviewing permit applications for work to be conducted under the AAA.
  • Reviewing treatment plans and final reports for work conducted under the AAA.
  • Functions on an on-call basis for the reporting of archaeological/paleontological emergencies unless otherwise delegated.
  • Manages reports and inquiries from the public regarding archaeological/ paleontological finds on state lands.
  • Manage ASM's legally-mandated Archaeological Permits Office and the employees, students, and volunteers engaged in work related to the AAA.
  • Assists state, federal, and tribal agency archaeologists and law enforcement, cultural resource managers, land managers, the Office of the Arizona Attorney General, university attorneys, and county attorneys with the enforcement of laws protecting archaeological resources and other efforts, as required.
  • Works with other state and federal agencies to define ASM's role in interagency agreements such as Interagency Service Agreements (ISAs), Memoranda of Agreement (MOAs), and Programmatic Agreements (PAs).
  • Serves as land manager for the statewide Site Steward program for two UA properties containing archaeological sites in Tucson (Tumamoc Hill and University Indian Ruin).
  • Prepares financial information for ASM State Mandated Programs including invoices and reports. Works with the UA RII Business Center.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of archaeology and archaeological experience, preferably within the Southwest and with cultural resources management in the United States.
  • Working knowledge of the Arizona Antiquities Act (A.R.S. § 15-1631 and § § 41-841 through 41-844) or similar statutes from another state.
  • Ability to read USGS 7.5’ maps and understanding of the UTM & PLSS location systems.
  • Demonstrable skills working with Microsoft Access and ESRI ArcGIS.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Anthropology or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience including 2 years managerial experience.
  • Ability to qualify under current Arizona Antiquities Act (AAA) standards as a Principal Investigator for the purposes of an AAA Permit.
