Cultural Surveys Hawai‘i, Inc. (CSH) seeks to hire multiple full-time, permanent archaeological staff for its O‘ahu office, to grow and advance with the company. CSH has 40 years’ experience providing quality cultural resource management (CRM) services throughout the Hawaiian Islands (please refer to for more information).

Position Description

The ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented and motivated “jack of all trades,” adept at collecting and reporting data to support archaeological studies. Under the direction of a Project Director or Lead, duties may include:

  • Independently monitoring construction activity on development projects in various environments. This is one of the most common tasks of CSH Archaeological Technicians and Archaeologists
  • Pedestrian survey, including archaeological feature identification, mapping, and recording. This work may involve strenuous physical labor, including hiking over rough terrain and/or through dense vegetation, or vegetation clearing
  • Subsurface survey, including controlled test excavations (test pits), areal excavations, and backhoe assisted testing programs. This work may require excavating by hand using shovels, trowels, picks, or similar tools
  • Working in close proximity to human skeletal remains and assisting Osteologists with tasks related to identified burials
  • Office work, including drafting maps in Adobe Illustrator, fieldwork results write-ups (historic property descriptions, stratigraphic profile descriptions, etc.), report writing (preparing environmental, background research, and previous archaeology sections)
  • Lab work, including washing artifacts, processing and sorting sediment samples, various curation tasks, and inputting information into the CSH Access database

You should be adaptable, safety-conscious, and willing to work around heavy machinery on busy construction sites. You will be expected to provide detailed digital and paper records of your work including field forms, hand-drawn profile and plan maps, photographs, and field condition updates in a timely manner.

Requirements

Must be eligible to work in the U.S. An undergraduate degree in Anthropology/Archaeology or a related field (e.g., Cultural Resource Management, Hawaiian Studies, History, Historic Preservation, Geology, Geography, Soil Science) is required. Demonstrated experience working in CRM archaeology and completion of an archaeological field school is preferred. Applicants with graduate degrees and/or prior archaeological work experience in Hawai‘i and/or other Pacific Islands are also preferred. You must have a valid driver’s license and will need your own transportation to get to various job sites. You are expected to have personal dig kits and survey gear.

Compensation and Benefits

The starting compensation range for these positions is $23–$30/hour, commensurate with experience, skills, and education. Pay packages include medical and dental insurance, a 401(k) program, and a paid time off program.

At the TerraX Laboratory in Tuscaloosa, we process and prepare all archaeological artifacts our field crews find to the highest standard of care. Under the supervision of our Lab Director,?Dr. , our lab personnel work to study and preserve cultural materials from ancient projectile points to twentieth-century cookware from over a dozen states.


Job Requirements:

  • Lead the conservation, preservation, and curation preparation of the artifact collections for transfer to appropriate repositories
  • Assist in lab processing, such as artifact analysis, labeling, data entry, and reporting

The PI will be responsible for the following:

  • Promote compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and state environmental regulations and other laws relating to the protection of cultural resources.
  • Conduct archival research and background records checks.
  • Manage and/or conduct all aspects of archaeological fieldwork (Phase I survey, Phase II testing, and Phase III mitigation), construction monitoring, and assist or coordinate tribal survey/monitoring activities using standards and procedures that comply with Section 106 of the NHPA and state-specific requirements.
  • Manage project tracking/coordination and quality control while supervising field technicians and/or multiple field crews.
  • Conduct artifact analyses, evaluate resources for eligibility to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and state registers of historic properties, and complete state survey/site forms.
  • Support clients during agency and tribal consultation, including coordinating consultation with State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPO), Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (THPO), Native American Tribes, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), and multiple state, federal, and local agencies.

  • Train, coach, and mentor junior field staff.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and experience:

  • A minimum of an MA/MS in Anthropology/Archaeology or related discipline required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of full-time experience serving as a PI with at least 5 years of experience conducting archaeological field surveys.
  • Current technical specialization preferred (lithic analysis, ceramics, faunal analysis, etc.).
  • Meet the Secretary of the Interior qualifications for a Principal Investigator in Archaeology.
  • Demonstrated work experience in the archaeology of the Midwest, Northern Great Plains, Northeast, or Southeast regions of the United States.?

SWCA is seeking a?Cultural Resources Intern?for Summer 2024 to support both office and field cultural resources projects in Sheridan, WY. Cultural Resources Interns will support a diversity of projects and will work with talented, multi-disciplinary teams of cultural resource professionals. Colorado Parks and Wildlife's Resource Stewardship Program is seeking to fill a temporary cultural resources technician position.? This is a 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, position and is based in north Denver.? This position provides a great entrance into the working worlds of Cultural Resources, Archaeology, Historic Preservation, Conservation, Park Management and GIS in the beautiful state of Colorado.

This position’s responsibilities will primarily include assisting with coordination of cultural resource inventories, planning, interpretation and management and will assist in compiling the results of archaeological surveys (site forms, reports, maps) for submittals related to Section 106 and other state and federal historic preservation laws.? This will include historical research, database management, GIS work, program planning, and administrative duties.? The Technician will conduct research on prehistoric and historic aspects of the park and write reports and summaries and will include preparation of GIS data/maps.?? The Technician will travel to state parks across Colorado to assess and monitor cultural resources.? Responsibilities will include communication to park staff regarding state and federal historic preservation compliance processes for cultural resources.

The Technician will assist in field inventories of other resources, including biological and geological, conduct meetings with partners, volunteers and contractors in the office and in the field.? Archaeological Field Director/ Principal Investigator

POWER Engineers, Inc., is seeking a full-time Senior Archaeological Principal Investigator for a leadership position in our Environmental Division – Resource Assessment and Mapping, Western Cultural Resources Department in California. This is salaried position with a pay range between $85,000 and $115,000.

Roles and Responsibilities

As a Principal Investigator you will help build the environmental project team focused on transmission/distribution lines, fire hardening, renewable energy, transportation projects, environmental surveys, NEPA/CEQA analyses, and permitting services. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to lead archaeological survey work on federal and other public lands in California and write reports for federal and state agency submittal. Projects may involve extended periods of fieldwork in remote areas including other West Coast states. Experience working with and executing projects regulated by CEQA as well as permittable experience on federal lands throughout the State is highly desirable. Remote monitoring experience and willingness to participate in these projects is also highly desirable. The position would report to one of our California office locations with the ability to work remotely from a mutually acceptable location.

Responsibilities will include technical support, writing support, and providing cultural resource management (CRM) expertise to the development and execution of projects in California and surrounding states. The PI should possess an advanced understanding of anthropological and archaeological field techniques in connection with locating, testing, recording, mapping, and evaluating archaeological sites and supporting field surveys. Conducting field surveys (pedestrian and shovel test surveys) using topographic maps, aerial photographs, and ESRI Field Maps and other GPS data collection software will be a regular part of this role.

This position requires the ability to work long hours, in difficult or remote environments, and in varying weather conditions. The position will also require the ability to work with and lead groups composed of diverse personalities. A positive attitude and ability to accept direction is a must, as well as the ability to work independently and to fully plan and execute personal assignments with minimal instruction. Effective communication skills are important for success in this role and will be called on frequently.

Required Education/Experience

  • Master’s degree in Archeology, Anthropology, or a related discipline
  • 5+ years of previous California CRM field experience
  • Skill in planning, writing, and reviewing cultural resource reports in support of Class III, NEPA, and CEQA reports.
  • Knowledge and understanding of equipment, technology, and paperwork used in the recording and documenting of archeological sites and artifacts.
  • Developing, planning, and executing all aspects of cultural resource projects in support of CEQA and Section 106 undertakings in California
  • Executing cultural resource file searches within the California CHRIS system
  • Ability to learn and communicate local cultural history and material in new project areas.

The Opportunity:?Drayton is looking to add a full-time Principal, Head of Archaeology (Principal) to our growing team in northern Washington. This position may be based anywhere in Whatcom, Skagit, or Snohomish County.

In this role, you will be accountable for overseeing all phases of project management, starting from proposal to final close-out. Additionally, you will play a vital part in guiding and mentoring the staff. You will also have the chance to boost our market share by cultivating relationships with existing as well as potential clients.

Job duties include:

Your Opportunity

The Staff Archaeologist role will include cultural resources fieldwork including coordinating and leading crews, background reviews, and report preparation for various clients such as ODOT, USACE, BIA, BLM, USDA, large utility clients, oil and gas, etc. Archaeology work could include the following: archaeological survey, testing, evaluation, construction monitoring, report and section writing, site record forms, as well as other tasks as assigned. Must demonstrate awareness of workplace safety and be willing to work independently when conditions are appropriate or with limited supervision. You will work closely with Stantec's project managers, senior archaeologists, and environmental staff. We have positions based in our Norman, OK and Tulsa, OK offices.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinating fieldwork and compliance documents/permitting for various clients
  • Participate in identifying and recording archaeological sites
  • Work closely with Projects Managers, Senior Archaeologists, and peers to make technical recommendations for cultural resources management
  • Collect field data
  • Conduct and assist with preliminary field reconnaissance surveys and archaeological reports
  • Assist in archaeological monitoring and excavations
  • Manage field equipment
  • Manage tasks and projects according to approved scopes of work and deliver quality reports on schedule and within budget
  • Completing QA/QC on deliverables

ASM is a consulting firm specializing in archaeology, history, architectural history and cultural resource management (CRM) with offices throughout the western U.S. and Hawai?i. The successful candidate will be an integral member of our dedicated team of professionals and work in a collegial and positive environment at an employee-owned company.

The Associate Archaeologist will perform research, fieldwork, laboratory analysis, monitoring, and preparation of technical reports for survey, testing, evaluation, data recovery, and construction monitoring projects under the direction of senior staff.
