Westerbeke W21 parts
I have a Westerbeke W21 that I have tore down and have many parts for it. I was told the motor ran before I bought it but the exterior was in fair to poor shape. I am only keeping the parts I know are reusable, and posting here if anyone is interested in any of these parts: Engine block with front cover, crankshaft pulley, oil pan, oil pump, crankshaft and pistons; cylinder head with rocker arms and valve cover; exhaust manifold; engine cooling water pump; engine cooling tubes (multiple); air intake silencer; air intake manifold; raw water pump; raw water pump drive gear assembly; Flywheel and Torque plate; transmission mounting plate, Hurth HBW50 transmission, and much more. Please message me if you need anything. -- Tim Dokken 1985 Sabre 32 #59 Bayfield, WI

Seized seacock

I tried to find the thread on ¡®how to unseize a seacock in the archives but ran out of ¡®search patience¡¯. What is the procedure to free up a seacock? Once it is free, what category of lubricant do I use? Thanks, Dave G Serenade S34-1 #184 NB, Canada

Glow Plugs
7
I found an old post about Glow Plugs, but was unable to answer this question: Are Glow Plugs a service item like spark plugs? I wouldn't think so but I thought I would ask all of you. Mine in my W21 are original, and I was able to pick up a new set off of Amazon for $54. I am assuming that if they all are the proper resistance and heat up to start the engine that is all they need to do, but maybe there is a reason to change them as preventative maintenance? Thanks everyone. -- Tim Dokken 1985 Sabre 32 #59 Bayfield, WI

Seized seaco
3
Dave: For most of us it¡¯s a no brainer that if you take them all out for cleaning and as my boatyard suggested, bead blasting, you need to make sure that each tapered insert is identified with its location. I labeled each and every one of them with masking tape as I took them out, but when the yard did the bead blasting job, the tape got removed from a few of the inserts in the process and two of the same size seacock inserts must have got mixed up. I did use some of the Spartan lapping compound to try to bed them in properly, but the location was not easy to get to and it resulted in a slow drip from one of them, unless the nut was tightened to the point where it was difficult to turn the handle and only identifiable after the boat went back in the water of course! I was not real happy, but luckily the dripping eventually stopped and they all now work well. IMHO I think they are awesome seacocks, -- Pete Waterson ¡°Chardonnay¡± S38-2 Oriental, NC

Tri-Radial Spinnaker and Storm Trysail, 38MKII, on consignment with Bacon Sails in Annapolis.
3
n 2023, I left a tri-radial spinnaker and storm trysail on consignment at Bacon Sails in Annapolis. From previous owner, both of these were for our 38MKII, we used the spinnaker a couple of times, and never used the trysail. Previous owner may have used the spinnaker, however, as they were sailing in the Newport-Bermuda race, and had sufficient funds, they bought new spinnakers and headsails for each race. They had entered our boat in that race in 1998, and were planning to sell her to the Commodore of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club after the race, pending sale of his boat. But we saw her and made an offer which was accepted in February 1998, so before the race. (A few weeks after she was in our possession, the RBCY Commodore sold his boat, too late. I later learned he had offered to buyher for $40,000 more than we paid. ) Bacon is really tough and honest in evaluating the quality of sails before they will accept them. In 2008, I took 3 Kevlar 150 genoas to Bacon, all three looked ok to me. They rejected two of them, and accepted one, but put it on their website as a practice sail for $25. If a sail does not sell after some months, they lower the price. I don't know what they are asking for these, but below are some details from their website. Gus Wilson, Wings' duet, 1989 38MKII, Hull 147. 132=WIAU-1 INSPECTED 02/20/2024 SPINNAKER, TRI-RADIAL, 0.75 OZ RIP STOP NYLON BY DABNEY SAILS. EXCELLENT. 132-WIAU-2, INSPECTED 02/20/24, STORM TRYSAIL, 10 OZ TRIPLE STITCHED DACRON, BY DABNEY SAILS, 7/8¡± EXTERNAL SLIDES, WEBBED TO GROMMETS ON TAPED LUFF, BLUE PEEL OFF NUMBERS, LIGHT SOIL & STAINS, NO BAG. 402 deck organizers
13
The Lewmar deck organizers on our 402 are in kind of sad shape. Sheaves are grooved, some of them are frozen, lots of corrosion on the aluminum upper part. Ideally, I¡¯d like to replace those POS with ball bearing organizers from a reputable manufacturer (Lewmar doesn¡¯t count as reputable, as far as I¡¯m concerned) but don¡¯t want to have to fill and drill for a slight mismatch in the bolt pattern. At a minimum, some of the sheaves are worn and need to be replaced¡ but Lewmar¡¯s web site is a mess and I can¡¯t figure out if those spares exist, or whether there are substitutes. Have any other 402 owners refurbished or upgraded their deck organizers? Thanks! Dan

Replacing 402 hot water heater
16
Arcadia's original Raritan 12 Gal. hot water heater has rusted out and is leaking, so it is time for a replacement. We currently do not have a mixing valve, so I am planning to add that as well as a 3 way valve for winterizing. Instead of simply replacing the Raritan, I am wondering if anyone has experience to share with using an Isotemp or Quick heater as a replacement. I see the Isotemp is stainless and plastic, comes with a mixing valve, and is less expensive than the Raritan. It looks as if either of those might require extending or replacing the heat exchanger hoses. Thanks in advance for any advice. -- -- Jim Harman Arcadia S402 #2 Southport CT

Sabre 402 - Bimini
4
Good morning Sabre enthusiasts, I have a customer that is replacing their Bimini on their 402 with split backstay. The pushpit is original, as are all mounting points, so I would assume that this would be a fit for nearly any original 402. The Bimini is in perfect condition, we are replacing it to accommodate a solar array. if there are any 402 owners out there that are interested in it, please send me an email. Dimensions for 1990 38 mkll
5
Hi, i need some help with a dimension for a 1990 38 mkll with a wing keel, not easily found online! I'm a long way from the boat so can't measure myself. I need the height from the bottom of the keel ( winged) to the highest point on the cabin top. This is to see if we can get it into barn without the mast (of course) with restricted height. Thanks in advance Vintage 38 mkll Great Lakes

GEICO Insurance
8
We all like bashing insurance companies, or so it seems and for 41 years I¡¯ve not had any complaint about BoatUS insurance, until this week. In the end, everything worked out, the process just sucked. We have been working our way to the Bahamas since last summer. Our current coverage included Inland and Coastal waters of the US and Canada out to 75 nm so long as I didn¡¯t enter waters governed by any other nation. Since the Bahamas were on our agenda, I called GEICO last October to inquire about any specific requirements for us to get a Bahamas endorsement as Second Star is celebrating her 32nd birthday. I was told I would need a Valuation and Condition survey that could be done in or out of the water. Fine and consistent with their policy to havre all 30+ year old boats surveyed. We are now in Velcro Beach and looking at a weather window for crossing next week. On Monday I called GEICO to request the Bahamas endorsement and was told I now needed a survey and a rigging inspection. I just about blew a gasket but managed to maintain some self-control. After informing the agent I had called last fall and no mention was made of a rigging survey they tried to locate the call and couldn¡¯t find it, or so they say, and denied my request for the endorsement. I did inform them I had been a customer for 41 years with no claims, had a 6 week old survey that found the boat in average or above condition with the recommendations for corrections being ¡°none currently¡±. I informed them the rigging was replaced 5 years ago, however the recipes were 1,000 miles away. The request was kicked up a level and the supervisor said no. I was able to download my call records from ATT and there I found a call I made to BoatUS Insurance on Oct 14. I called them back and gave the agent this specific information and was denied again, although he did connect me with a kind supervisor who actually listened to my argument, 41 years of no claims, recent excellent survey, prior experience sailing to the Bahamas, nand repeated suggestions I would be looking for new insurance provider. She was sympathetic and agreed to review it with the next level of management and get back to me with the decision. Under some domestic pressure to follow up I called again and was told it had been reviewed by management and was denied. I was perhaps a bit more force full in my response suggesting a change in providers and a complaint to the NY Insurance Commission. Shortly there after I received a call from GEICO on a private line, unfortunately I was helping another boat unjam an in-mast furler. I returned the call to voice mail. An hour so later the kindly manager I had spoken called me and said they would provide the Bahamas endorsement. It was the hardest I've ever worked to spend $20, the cost of a 2 month endorsement. The lessons from the tribulation are simple: Record the exact date and time of any inquires made about your policy. A cell phone makes this easier because that information (at least on ATT) is readily availble on their website. If your boat is 30 years old expect to need a survey. If your boat is 30 years old expect to need a rigging survey Be firm in your dealings Loyalty does pay off I believe loyalty and knowing the precise date and time of any contact made the case for my appeal. Had I known a rigging survey was needed, I would have had one done. Forewarned is forearmed. Hope this is helpful to others planning similar trips. Dave

Keel bolts
8
Thanks for all the responses. But my question is more basic. When I do this do I take the nut off and recaulk. If so are there any advice on that I have heard that it could be a difficult job. What are the potential difficulties. Is it possible to break the bolt or strip it or introduce a leak with an incomplete seal with the caulk. Anything else might go wrong? If I break the bolt do I have to remove the keel and send it to Canada for repair? Perhaps I am overthinking it ? Old style Impeller for W35b. (Westerbeke Part#034440) FREE for the postage.
11
I have an old style raw water impeller, new, never installed, for a Westerbeke 35b(actually used in several different engines and generators). Westerbeke part# 34440. It's the impeller, paper gasket, and glycerine lubricant. No screws. I ordered the wrong one a few years ago and never got around to returning it. It's free if anyone can use it. This impeller only fits the old style raw water pump(#33636) which uses a paper gasket. Many pumps have been replaced by a newer version pump with a rubber 0-ring gasket, that needs impeller kit #48500 -- Scott Shucher Quintessa '98 Sabre 362 #200 South Yarmouth, MA

Inverter/Charger
8
#Sabre402
Hi Folks: The original Heart Interface Freedom 10 charger/invert, (1KVA) on my S402 has stopped functioning. It is located in a locker under the settee just forward of the Nav station. I was wondering what choices people have made for charger/inverts on the S402. The space in the existing locker about 16" L x11.5"w x 8" deep. is too short for any for the Victron offerings except their 3KVA Multiplus unit which looks to like it might fit but very close on the depth dimension. Victron also is offering a new 1.2kVA unit that would fit nicely but its transfer switch capacity is only 16 A. Last year I had upgraded the battery system to 4 -100 Ah LiFeP batteries with a Zeus regulator and a 170 amp alternator. This is all working great for how we use the boat. I was surprised how little power we actually use on a daily basis while cruising. Habits of cruising on boats with low capacity electrical systems don't just go away.. I would be delighted to hear what others have done. A few pictures of the old unit and the battery install under the Nav seat are included. Best, Andy Snowy Owl S402 #40

keel bolts and hatch covers
12
Hi I have been advised to retorque my keel bolts. I have located a torque wrench but am not too sure as to how to proceed. Any suggestions? I also have a problem with the large hatch cover over the V berth. I cannot get it to stay open. everything seem to be in proper order but no matter how hard I twist the knobs the hatch will not stay open except when it is fully open. I took the knobs from the two little used hatch covers midships and tried them to no avail. Once again, any suggestions? Life Raft disposal
4
I have a Winslow 4 person liferaft in a hard case. Cert ran out 12/23. It was manufactured 2002. Given its age, the likelihood of a successful inflation test is low and, for the price of the repack of this high end raft ($1600 estimate), I can get a new Revere 4 person suited to my not going further than ~100 miles offshore. Also, it has a 5 year service interval which is a $$ saver. Evidently it's the flares that cause the typical 3 year limit. 1. Anyone that wants it is welcome to it. It's in Western MA now & my first trip to Maine is in May. I am keeping the cradle to adapt for a subsequent raft. 2. Disposal. I guess it needs to be opened up, probably inflated, and cylinder, flares etc removed. It would actually be interesting put out on the lawn and yank the painter & watch er go. 3. So the question is, anything to be done with this other than take up landfill space? -- Dave Short SV One Timer 1997 S362 Mt Desert, ME
