Keel Boat Replacement

Who in the Northeast is qualified to replace the keel bolts if I remove and replace the keel myself and transport it to the recommended facility?

Lots of yards. Where’s your boat?

While I’m not personally familiar with yards in NY and CT others on this list are, I’m sure. Carter would you like to chime in??
I’m not sure why you think the bolts need replacing but the process will involve transporting the boat to the yard, building a cradle around the keel, unbolting the keel, then lowering the cradle/keel ?and taking it to a shed for removal of the old bolts. The bolts are cast into the lead keel. Installing new bolts is, I would expect, a job not all yards would undertake. It can certainly be transported by truck to a yard that has particular experience. You can reach out to Bristol Marine and/ or SafeHarbor Newport in RI as well. But you probably don’t have to go that far. Essex CT and Stonington CT are two places I’d ask around about full service boatyards.
Then it all goes back together in reverse.
?Good luck!

John one more thing. Mars Metals I believe built our Sabre keels. Give them a call too. Here’s a link to their website.?

A few years back I looked into modifying a S36 keel to make it shorter. I think Sabre used a foundry in Connecticut or Rhode Island. Glen would know.

John,
?
I agree with Len.? I am looking to do the same with my 38.? I have been in contact with MARS keels to do this work.? They manufactured the lead keels.
Right now they are unable to do the work as I was informed that they are in the process of upgrading ventilation in their shop.? I am not sure when they will be ready.
?
MARS is equipped with helping with paperwork to get it back and forth across the border.? They will also ship it back in a frame to allow easier reattachment to the hull.
?
I am targeting this fall to get mine done.

Tim I have some experience with Marrs. ?Be prepared for lots of delays and a bit of confusion on their part. ?They are very difficult to deal with as far schedules go. You will need drawings in CAD, and they want you to measure the keel bolt locations with a laser. ?Then when they are satisfied they will input the info and the build a mold and the finally ship it. ?This process took ?5 months after they recieved drawings. ?

If prices are even close the Mexican keel builders are far more professional and their castings are top notch.

Hi Allison,
?
MARS is an hour from me so its the best alternative that I have at the moment.
I am not replacing the keel, just the bolts.? I will ship the keel to them and they will replace them by gouging out the original J-Bolts and replacing with new.
?
I have spoken with Bill a few times to discuss the process.? I have a few key people locally that I have worked with on previous refits and trust them to help with the process.

Hi All,

How have you determine when it is time to replace the keel bolts?

Thanks,

Hi Manny,
?
In many cases, it is very obvious.
?
If you have serious corrosion present - a visual inspection will clearly identify any severe bolt/nut corrosion issues.
If a keel has mysterious leaking through the keel bolts - then the option is to drop the keel to inspect the bolts to determine whether or not the bolts are compromised.? They will show signs of hour glassing.
?
Nut corrosion is common and can be corrected by removing the nuts and replacing with new nuts and washers.? This provides an opportunity to see more of the bolts and inspect for any hour glassing present.
?
Stray voltage at a marina can be a real risk - If all looks good now, it's not a bad idea to add a galvanic isolator to the boat to help ensure some protection against stray voltage.
?
Others may have more input on this.
?
I added an example I found on line as an example of hour glassing.

Tim, this kind of damage would not br obvious without dropping the keel, am I correct?

If only one keel bolt needs replacing it is possible to add another keelbolt next to it without dropping the keel. A hole is drilled down into the keel from the bilge and another hole is drilled horizontally to intercept the vertical hole. Threaded rod is then used to make a keel bolt with a nut and washer on the bottom (in the horizontal hole) and nut washer on the bilge side of the rod. The horizontal hole is then filled with epoxy.

Hi Michael,
?
Not always.
?
Evidence of hour glassing can appear as leaking through the nut area as the seal has been compromised.
Removing the nut or washer and digging out the sealant can also give you enough exposure to see if it is there.? (not always)
?
This could be a long drawn out answer as there are many indicators.
?
The 38 MKII has 9 bolts I recall and they used an epoxy to attach the hull to the keel.
Chances of failure are extremely low in my opinion-? Design factors are 5x minimum.
?
My boat is 33 years old and there is evidence of stray voltage corrosion (on one bolt) - I am getting my j-bolts replaced (all of them)
so I can hand this boat off to a future generation (once I am done) knowing it is a safe as it was designed to be.
?
I have had suggestions to drill down and remove old J bolt and replace with stainless stud - I have considered this option but it would be a temporary one for me.
I have made the decision to replace them all.
?
Cost is approximately CAD $10,000 for MARS work + yard work/freight etc.
?
I have budgeted CAD $20K (USD $14,000) for the job.? (for those who want an idea of cost)
